Mission:
To ensure that every child has a safe, supportive and permanent home by providing volunteer advocacy for the best interests of abused and neglected children within the child welfare system.
Programs: In Allegheny County alone there are over 5,000 children active within the Children's Court due to abuse and neglect by their caregivers. Over 2,500 of these children now live in foster care; they have been separated from loved ones, siblings, and from their friends and schools. They may be forced to move from place to place for years while an overextended child welfare system tries to determine where they should live and what is best for their future.
That's where CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) steps in. CASA utilizes trained community volunteers, appointed by the Court, to advocate in the best interests of abused and neglected children. Assigned to only one case at a time, each volunteer has the luxury of focus unparalleled in our overwhelmed child welfare system -- and each CASA volunteer remains on his or her case until it is closed, providing a strong, consistent voice for a child who is enduring very difficult and confusing times.
