Mission: Casa del Oso California (The California House of Bear) The house of the bear is a non-profit organization. Our mission is to build a sober community that fuels resilience and harnesses the transformational power of meaningful work so that together we rise, recover, and live. Since 2017, we’ve been helping people rise above the ashes of addiction. Our three-month program teaches you how to take responsibility for your actions. There is no fee for participating in the program, we cover all expenses, room and board. Our organization is predominantly funded by profit from our purpose driven construction business; yet we gratefully also accept donations. If you want to be in recovery from substance use disorder and have the desire to live sober, we will help you find strength and a new community to support your journey. Our program is centered on the dignity of work. Individuals in the program are assigned to different jobs chosen by the head sponsor of the program. Jobs include plumbing, electrical, cement working, carpentry, and more. You don’t get rewarded with money, you get rewarded with responsibility. Work teaches the importance of taking responsibility. The program also includes immersive trips where we join other recovery communities. Full medical examination will be taken for all participants. We ask that you provide details of any health issues you might have including choice of drug(s). We also ask you to inform us im- mediately about any health or mental problems that could affect your ability to function and work. To those seeking help, know that you don’t and won’t have to deal with this alone. We are not fully licensed legal agents, but we often are able to help participants with legal matters. We ask that all individuals who want the help not have any arrest warrants with the law, and if they do, they have to be willing to fixit. The program requires members to work out of the county. We don’t want any prob- lems nor harm to come to anyone and we ask the same for us. Please think this through as we don’t take this decision lightly. We hope you make the decision that is best for you and welcome with open hands those who want to join our program. A 501(c)3 Nonprofit Organization Tax ID # 86-2943168
Results: My name is Juan Guerrero. In 2007, I suffered from a difficult separation from my partner, with whom I have two wonderful kids. I struggled with depression. I started abusing alcohol and some drugs to cope. I was stubborn and hard to help. A trusted ally brought me to AA, where I recovered myself, my life and my sense of purpose in the world. As often is the case, I started helping others around me that were in pain and coping with addiction. I listened. I helped direct them into programs. And I even started putting them to work in my handyman business. I remember how good it felt to recover myself and to help that recovery happen in other people. I felt blessed. What was once my wound, had become my wisdom. Five years ago, I started a nonprofit called Casa del Oso (House of the Bear). Our mission is to build a sober community that fuels resilience and harnesses the transformational power of connection so that together we rise, recover, and live. Our three month program is centered on the dignity of work. There is no fee for participating in the program, we cover all expenses, room and board. Individuals in the program are assigned to different jobs chosen by the head sponsor of the program. Jobs include plumbing, electrical, cement working, carpentry, and more. Participants don’t get rewarded with money, they get rewarded with responsibility. Work teaches the importance of taking responsibility. The program requires daily participation in AA and also includes immersive trips where we join other recovery communities. To date we have helped 45 people and we are just getting started. Today, over 40 million people struggle with addiction, but many don’t get the treatment they need. Overdoses kill more of us than breast cancer, guns and car crashes combined. Only 1 in 10 who need addiction treatment ever receive it. It doesn’t have to be this way. Our organization is predominantly funded by profit from our purpose driven construction busi ness; but the need is so great, we are now asking for your support. Your gift will help serve those in our existing program, but more importantly, it will help us double our impact by opening a second Oso house. All donations are tax deductible. Thank you for your consideration.
