Mission: The mission of the Carnegie Library of Homestead is to inspire the mind, enhance the body, and bring delight to the spirit of our community. This mission expresses Carnegie''s vision when he built the facility to serve his workers in the steel mills. Now in our second century of service area includes Munhall, Homestead, West Homestead, Whitaker and surrounding communities. Twenty-three percent of the residents of Homestead live below poverty level but low cost housing continues to attract prospective residents resulting in constant use of the services we provide.
Results: 65,000 library books and other items are borrowed each year; 909,480 minutes of free computer time are used by library patrons yearly; 475 children and teens participate in 75 Summer Reading programs; 340 preschoolers receive outreach storytelling programs; 100 children participate in summer swim programs; 6,350 people attended one or more of our first eight Performance Series concerts in the Music Hall (from all over Pittsburgh and Allegheny County and from 26 different states); 350 people regularly use the Athletic Club each month; 60 seniors participate in Silver Sneakers exercise programs; 200,000 patrons and customers visit Carnegie Library of Homestead per year.
Target demographics: People of all ages. Target neighborhoods are Homestead, Munhall, West Homestead and Whitaker and nearby communities. People from anywhere in Allegheny County can and do use our facility. Concert attenders come from all over the country. Use of the public library requires an Allegheny County library card (available at the library); use of the Athletic Club is by membership (currently $30 per month); tickets for our concerts are available at the library and from Ticketmaster.
