Mission: Health Advocates For Older People was founded in 1985 by a coalition of individuals and nonprofit agencies to promote healthy aging. Our first projects focused on healthcare, advocacy and training. The guiding philosophy was to increase access, promote wellness, and assure the aged were treated with dignity.
Recognizing that the number of frail elderly was increasing as people lived longer, HAFOP expanded its scope of activities. We initiated 2 projects to provide the increased support this group needs to continue independent living. The first is Community Education and Outreach Program that provides information about housing and support options to seniors and their families. The second is the development of a nonprofit assisted living program, Carnegie East House.
This residence, which has received strong support from other social service agencies and diverse religious groups, opened mid-December, 2002. Health Advocates also continues to be involved in a broad range of activities affecting the aging, as noted below.
