Mission: Carlow University, a Catholic, women-centered, liberal arts institution embodying the heritage and values of the Sisters of Mercy, engages its diverse community in a process of life-long learning, scholarship, and research. This engagement empowers individuals to think clearly and creatively; to actively pursue intellectual endeavors; to discover, challenge, or affirm cultural and aesthetic values; to respond reverently to God and others; and to embrace an ethic of service for a just and merciful world.

Target demographics: Carlow University welcomes students of all ages to its academic programs. Some students choose to live on campus, while many others choose to commute. Carlow welcome students from across the nation and around the world, though the majority are from the Pittsburgh area.

Carlow is a faith based university that provides a quality educational experience to a number of underserved traditional and non-traditional women and a few good men. For most students they are the first in their family to attend college. This experience facilitates social mobility and enables them to become valuable contributing members of the community.
