CHR is so fantastic. They treat their rescues like their own. No pressure to adopt. They want to find the perfect home for their animals. Our Sophie was in such poor shape when they got her, it took nearly 3 months to make her well. We just fell in love with Sophie. She is now living her best life.
Three years ago today, Angel came as our foster. At eight months of age, she found herself in a rescue. Lucky for her it was Caring Hearts. As foster volunteers, we received support and guidance from the rescue to help her transform from a fearful puppy into a more confident dog through the use of positive training techniques. As you guessed, she never left us and has become the center of our home. Apparently, she has also developed a taste for the fine arts!
We adopted Teddy from Caring Hearts. Before we officially adopted him, we fostered him to make sure our family was a good fit for Teddy. Teddy is a wonderful, affectionate dog, but he is socially awkward with other dogs. Caring Hearts worked with us to help train Teddy with his over the top reactions whenever he sees another dog. We're still working with him, but he's come a long way. He's a great addition to our family, and we're very grateful that Caring Hearts rescued him and brought him into our lives.
Caring Hearts saved this precious pup from crossing tge bridge. She is now eight years old and Dakota is an amazing little dog. Thanks to caring hearts rescue, I have a best friend. They are kind, patient, and truly care about the dogs they rescue.

They have offered support and advice when our girl injured her back and saw us through this scare. They helped with grooming tips that have saved us a great deal of money. Sabrina offers grooming classes and our foster mom (Debi) calls and we swap stories and pictures. They are great to adopt from.

We adopted Rye, a sweet 6 year old Yorkie, formally known as Biscuit in May 2022. I found him on PetFinder with an accurate and detailed profile. It had clear instructions for the adoption process and I loved their mission on their website. CHR responded to my inquiry and application quickly. I had a very thorough phone interview with Sabina who was informative, helpful and honest. They really are looking to find the perfect fit.
My rescue, Rye, had a rough start to life and wasn’t in the best of health when they rescued him. He was older, neglected and had a lengthy vet report that they gladly shared with me. There was no sugar coating his condition. I was able to make a decision for what was truly best for this pup and our family. They really do care about finding the right home for the right pet and they even offer assistance and training.
Caring Hearts Rescue changed this pups life and ours as well. I couldn’t be more happy with the entire experience. We are so in love with Rye and he is the perfect addition to our family. This is the best rescue group in the DC-Baltimore region. We researched dozens and applied to over 15 rescues. Caring Hearts did the best job of rehabilitating and getting to know their dogs. We were matched with the sweetest pup, just the right combination of traits for us. Most of the other rescues focus on volume and don't know their rescued animals or adopters very well. Caring Hearts goes above and beyond with support after the adoption. We have remained in touch and gotten advice on food, grooming, vet care, and keeping our dog secure so he doesn't get out. We're looking forward to boarding with them when we go out of town.
We have now adopted two pups from CHR. Marco came to us in August of 2019 because we lost our beloved Eli to cancer, and we just adopted Cruz a month ago from CHR. They both are awesome pups. Cruz was from a puppy mill and unfortunately, he lost his eye from that situation. Both dogs are such loving Shih Tzu's and we're so blessed to have found CHR to adopt our rescues from. Marco is black and white, and Cruz is brown. They're chilling on the couch right before Christmas.
I adopted a rescue from Caring Hearts a few years ago and can say their name truly fits. They have caring hearts. Before adopting out any of their rescues, they screen them for health problems as well as behavioral problems. They also well screen the potential rescue parent thoroughly, this ensures that they rescue goes to a forever home. I m tankful for my rescue everyday, she is truly a joy in my families life.
You will never find a more caring, patient, knowledgeable, hardworking, group of people completely committed to rescuing dogs and placing them in loving situations where they can thrive. I've donated Caring Hearts Rescue for years and LOVE their mission. Caring Hearts Rescue in Springfield, VA is amazing! And they truly do CARE!!
They screen new owners really well so that the dogs that have already lost one home don't get returned and just become throw-away pups with fear of abandonment behaviors. They offer free training for life so you always have someone to help if they come with fear or other behavior issues or develop them later on after adoption. They are also knowledgeable about dog health, healthy foods, home-cooked foods and treats if that's your thing, and natural or non-prescription options for aches and pains and rashes, etc. They typically only take small dogs so they also have a lot of knowledge about the various breeds and temperaments. And they take in dogs of all ages, including older dogs where an owner dies or moves or people just no longer want even if they are great dogs with many years left - smaller dogs live significantly longer than bigger dogs. And they will take in abused or neglected dogs and address their medical issues when former owners fail the furbaby.
I adopted a young dog (maybe 2-4 yrs) that had just had his leg amputated. He had been hit by a car and the owners never took him to the vet so by the time CHR received him, the leg was beyond repair. His other back leg was operated on but unable to be returned totally to normal and due to all of the trauma before the surgery, his immune system started attacking the joints in his other 2 legs. But CHR has a solid relationship with a great group of vets and with a little PT and the right meds, we eventually had him running around with our other ShihTzu and the neighbor dogs. I just cannot say enough good things about CHR!

This nonprofit ROCKS! So many people today just get rid of their dogs when the dogs start to have health problems or get old and they no longer want to care for a dog. And still many others turn over dogs saying they aren't good dogs without having done anything to train the dog! Dogs, just like kids, have to be trained. It's a tragedy when so many of these abandoned and surrendered dogs still have so much life in them and love to give. Caring Hearts Rescue takes these small breed pups, gets them healthy and/or trained and then works to place them with an owner who really believes that "till death do us part" should also apply to our pets too. And recently, they have also been rescuing many from breeders that raise them in horrible conditions for food! I have heard of some countries serving dog but darling little Shih Tzus, Maltese, and Westies? I could not believe it! I LOVE CHR!
We’ve adopted two dogs from Caring Hearts: little Tucker, who passed away from cancer in 2020, and wonderful Oliver, one of the black-and-white Holiday Angels, rescued from a terrible hoarding/abandonment situation in December 2015. Oliver has provided us with love and laughter for six years now, and is still doing great. Sabina Poinelli rescues little dogs with big needs: the old, the sick, dogs with behavioral problems- you name it. We are so grateful for the wonderful work of Caring Hearts.

My experience with Caring Hearts has been very disappointing. I saw a dog I was interested in on PetFinder and inquired twice with no response. I finally contacted the organization directly and they told me that they don't respond to individual emails and i needed to fill out an application, which I did. So that is the first problem - the PetfFinder system has the Ask About This Pet option, so if Caring Hearts doesn't answer emails, then maybe they should not post their pets on PetfFinder. As far as my application, I offered to take a 15 year old dog and had another dog as a back up, in case my first choice had been taken. It's been several weeks now and no one has responded, so I have moved on. You would think if someone was willing to take a 15 year old dog, the rescue might want to respond, but nope. I am just posting this so no one else spends a lot of time applying and getting their hopes up, only to be let down. I feel like shelters are the best way to go. Rescues are always a let down.
Caring hearts has been saving abandoned, and abused dogs, dogs that are relinquished by owner since 1995- They save every dog - that comes by their path. They will take a complete health history and assist in all facets of health care- These dogs have a second chance at life. It is a great feeling to read and help

We adopted Missy, our shih tsu from Caring Hearts. She is great. She was given excellent care. Caring Hearts noticed she had an eye issue and took care of an operation that she needed. They are fantastic!
We adopted Lucas from Caring Hearts in 2016. What a fantastic organization. Lucas was rescued along with his pals in December 2015. They are known as the Holiday Angels and Lucas will be in attendance at the Holiday Angels Black & White reunion next month. What can I say about this organization??? This organization, along with Sabina Poinelli and the many volunteers continue to go above and beyond their call of duty. I recently viewed a video which includes the dogs rescued back in 2015. Lucas was in this video and I cannot tell you the sadness I felt looking at it. Knowing that my Lucas was in that video broke my heart. However, Caring Hearts to the Rescue!!!! Lucas would not be with us today if it weren't for the love, dedication, and the many, many countless hours that this organization gave to get these fur babies back to health. Me and my long time girlfriend, suddenly lost our dog after unnoticed complications by the vet, after a simple surgury. He died in my arms the day after at home. It completely destroyed the both of us, for a very long time. If it wasent for one another, idk how either of us would have gotten through it. A year or so later we came cross caring hearts, and a little long legged shitzu named "snoopy" he was the last of his 12 rescued brothers and sisters. Because no one wanted a shitzu with long legs. We explained the situation with sabina, and set up an appointment to come ser him. Almost instantly, it was the first time in a long time i actually saw my girlfriend truly smile again, the second she picked up "snoopy". Sabina, said we could take him for a trial . For which we did, but before we even made it home. We had already renamed him "Remington, aka Remy", and went to petsmart and bought him a bed, toys and everything. Its now been about 2 1/2 years, and are lives wouldnt be complete without Remy. He has turned into a perfect addition to our family. And a great lil brother to our late Charlie bear. Caring hearts, and Sabina couldnt have been more understanding. And they care for every rescue, as if they were one of their own. And make sure they only send rescues off to caring moms and dads. The work they do, is so amazing. We wouldnt have wanted to adobt from anyone else. They are all little angels on earth for the work they do.
This is Donut. Previously, known as Astrid when she was at Caring Hearts Rescue. We adopted her 3 years ago and love her. Caring Hearts Rescue is amazing. They care so much for these pups and go above and beyond to make sure they are well taken care of with them and the dogs future homes. Hats off to them! We received our precious Benny (a shih tsu -sp?) from Caring Hearts 14 1/2 years ago and they were excellent in their description of Benny's previous life. He was five at the time and, unfortunately, we had to let him move on in January 2018, There is no doubt that we will get our next dog from Caring Hearts when we're ready. We are also long-time donors and encourage all to take part in keeping this wonderful rescue thriving.
These wonderful people went all the way from Springfield, VA, to Prince Georges County , , to pull him out of a shelter and put him with a wonderful woman who fostered him. He's a great dog.

I have adopted two dogs from Caring Hearts Rescue. With my current adoption, the foster mother provided detailed information on Tapsi's temperament and behavior, which was extremely helpful in acclimating her (Tapsi, that is) to my home. She was also able to pass along Tapsi's entire medical history from her prior owner.
With both adoptions, Caring Hearts was careful to match me with dogs that would thrive in my home. Both adoptions have been complete successes from my perspective. I adored Miss Honey who, sadly, passed away two years ago and am in love with my current resident. Tapsi is also a favorite in our neighborhood and has quite a large fan base in Arundel-on-the-Bay!

She didn’t vocalize; she would often just sit and stare at my wife and I or join us on the sofa and quickly fall asleep – a perfect little lap dog. Not so much anymore. In the beginning, Missy was just trying to figure us and the relationship out. Now, Missy has blossomed into a very secure, playful, and active dog who is comfortable wandering through the yard, sniffing at the scents deer and other critters have left behind, or running through the house, playing hide and seek among the furniture, or snuggling up on a lap and taking a nap.
The Great Outdoors and Housebreaking
At first, the outdoors or any large open spaces seemed to intimidate Missy. She would freeze and want to go to a smaller, more confined space. Sabina suggested we use a small X-enclosure outside to give her a sense of intimacy and (literally) fence out the great outdoors. Using treats, we would bribe Missy out to her little pen where she (apparently) felt safe and would go potty. It took her about ten days before she pushed the gate open and decided to sniff around in the yard. Now she’ll come to me, bark once, and when I ask her what she wants, she runs to the laundry room and stares at the door -- telling me she wants to go out. Now Missy will regularly ask to go out to potty or just to sniff around and check out what’s happened in “her” yard.

Toys and Play
In her first week with us, we went to Pet Supplies Plus and bought Missy a variety of toys – some small, some medium, a few plush, and a couple of latex squeakers. Missy ignored them all, barely giving them a sniff before walking past them. We tried different toys, we tried tossing and rolling the toys in front of her; nothing piqued her interest. Then one day she ran into my office and barked at me. When I stood up to take her out, she ran to her toys, picked one up, and waited for me to follow. We’ve been playing chase, fetch, and tug-of-war two to four times a day ever since. Sometimes I catch her with one of her toys throwing it up in the air and trying to catch it!
My Home Care Companion
I’ve been recovering from major surgery since October and Missy has been better than any home care provider. I must sleep sitting up, so I sleep in the recliner at night. First thing in the morning, Missy runs downstairs to my recliner and gently puts a paw on my foot. Once she knows I’m awake, she runs to my shoes (the next step to going out), and when I have my shoes on, she then runs to the laundry room door. All through the day she “reminds” me that I need to move around – as I fix her meals, take her for walks – and she even joins in with my physical therapy. I don’t know if Missy’s therapy is doctor-approved, but I believe my shoulder has improved with all the toy tossing and tug-of-war we’ve been playing.
I could keep writing about how much joy Missy has brought into our lives – every day she does something that makes us break out laughing. We are so thankful to have found Missy – and we’re sure Missy is happy in her forever home. Thanks again, Sabina and Caring Hearts Rescue!
I first adopted from Caring Hearts Rescue 4 years ago (Zoe), and then again 3 years ago (Maury). The people who work with CHR are amazing; they are caring, hard working, kind and filled with love for dogs in need. They work tirelessly to help abandoned and rescued dogs, no matter what their condition or age. They even have a Safe Haven Sanctuary where unadoptable dogs can live out their life in comfort, safe from a scary world, and with love. They are truely a blessing for our four legged babies in need. Sabina Poinelli, who heads up this organization is the most fabulous, caring person I have ever met. Caring Hearts take such excellent care of their rescue dogs and make sure they have all the medical and other attention they need, fostering them for as long as necessary to nurse them back to health no matter what their condition when found. Because they rescue dogs that are often in terrible shape, they need generous donors to do their wonderful work. My precious Lilly is one of those dogs that required a large investment of time and money. I have been donating for years and believe they spend the donations very wisely. They truly deserve to be a top-rated nonprofit.
Over the past ten years we have adopted 3 fur babies from Caring Hearts Rescue. Sabina and the rest of the volunteers are just as good as it gets. They will take on even the most difficult cases who through no fault of their own have suffered un-speak able abuse and trauma. The love and patience that they share with these poor souls seems to be limitless. They also take in senior pets that have been just tossed aside, giving them love, medical care and a comfortable home for the rest of their lives. Our most recent bundle of love adopted through Caring Hearts Rescue is Ari. She was rescued from the Korean meat market along with several other dogs after enough money was raised to bring them to the US. Ari has filled our lives with an endless supply of love and kisses and we are so beyond thankful to have her with us. Our other CHR adoptee, Ava also loves having Ari with us as they have bonded and have great fun playing and hanging out together every day. Huge thank you to everyone at Caring Hearts Rescue!

It has been almost nine years since our first experience with Caring Hearts Rescue. We adopted our sweetest little Nina through Caring Hearts Rescue and primarily my experience then and has been with Sabina Poinelli . I was so impressed with the thoughtful and loving care that Sabina and everyone connected with Caring Hearts Rescue that I started to support them monthly and when ever there was a special need. We have since adopted two other dogs through the rescue. We next adopted our Ava that was found almost dead along the road in Easton MD in March. She was not expected to live as was only three pounds when found. She survived somehow but due to her young age of only 6 months and the abuse this poor baby had experienced she failed the aggression test. Little Ava could only leave the high kill shelter if she went directly to a rescue. We agreed to foster Ava and I will never forget that Sabina drove two hours there and back to save Ava. That was almost 6 years ago and Ava is now thriving and is best friends with our latest rescue Ari. Caring Hearts Rescue held fund raisers and were able to save Ari along with 4 other dogs from the Korean Meat Market. Ari is the most amazingly sweet and loving dog and we can't imagine what would have happened to her without Caring Hearts Rescue. They also rescue poor little old and sick seniors that no one else wants. The heart and dedication that I have seen is just unsurpassed ...they will go way above and beyond for these innocent dogs, there is no situation to dire or difficult based on what I have seen. They are all volunteers and just as good as it gets!

Caring Hearts Rescue is all about caring for the love of animals. Sabina was wonderful from the start trying to help us understand all about rescue and what it detailed. We have another small dog from a breeder but this time wanted to try to Rescue a dog in need. The process that Caring Hearts Rescue goes through to match the dogs to their forever homes is great. Sabina is very helpful from application to adoption. She let us foster our girl for several months to see how she would adapt to our home, family and our surroundings. She does over the phone training with you to help with problems that arise or the dog already has at the beginning. We have a long way to go with our adopted girl but I know if we needed help or advice they would respond to us. Its like Caring Hearts Rescue is a big family once you adopted from them. Caring Hearts Rescue is an extraordinary rescue. I was matched with poodle-mix Derby 5-years ago, and Sabina at CHR allowed me to foster 2-weeks before adoption. Derby celebrated his 8th Birthday in July. He came with separation anxiety and resource guarding issues, and Sabina was always available to listen and offer recommendations. Derby has become a wonderful friend and companion. He loves socializing with other dogs and getting pampered by humans.
I have been dealing with and fostering for CHR for sometime. They are a great rescue and work hard to find the right fit for their fosters. I have nothing but the highest respect for them and think they do the greatest work in the DC/MD/VA area. I highly recommend them.
The people at Caring Hearts helped connect my wife and me to what has turned out to be a wonderful companion. Chester is 8 years old today, and has been part of our lives for more than half of his.
We didn't know when we brought him home that I'd soon be facing a series of medical issues, but he turned out to be the perfect therapy dog.
Caring Hearts continued to support both Chester and me after we brought him home. When I had to go to California for some surgery, he was welcomed into a Caring Hearts pack, and he had such a great time he almost didn't want to come home. But he did, and he stayed glued to my side until I was back up and around.
Since then, he is always ready to go for a walk, play fetch-the-ball, make his favorite toy squeak incessantly, or just snuggle up.

We found Caring Hearts Rescue by googling for “cockapoos available for adoption.” One named Chester looked promising, and Caring Hearts arranged for us to visit him at the house where he was being fostered. It was love at first sight.
Chester definitely has a lot of poodle in him, but we say he’s mostly an “Affection Hound” because he’s happiest when he’s physically in touch with one of his humans.
Caring Hearts made sure we knew about his fear-aggression, the apparent product of an unhappy puppyhood, and they taught us how to deal with it.
When I had to go to a medical center in another state for some complicated surgery, Caring Hearts found us someone he could stay with, and now her house is one of his favorite places.
Caring Hearts is a first-class organization, staffed by people who love dogs and want to see them happy. I recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a furry companion to love.
I love CHR. They have a great manager and network of volunteers and supporters who rescue, rehab, and rehome adorable dogs. Many of the animals really need love and TLC. I am a long time supporter of CHR and I had two wonderful CHR dogs. One died recently but the other is my very best friend. CHR is fantastic and I love them!

CHR is fantastic - a solid, mission driven, and well managed nonprofit.
They rescue, care for and re-home small dogs in need. I adopted my Furry Friend there nine years ago and his sister a couple of years later. I have been a donor and supporter of CHR for years. I think the dedication and care they show for vulnerable animals who need love and TLC is wonderful.
I adopted Yoshi, a 3 year old Japanese Chin, from CHR in April 2017. It was the best decision I've ever made. He is a delightful little boy who loves all animals and all people. He and my 9 year old Bichon, Eli, are inseparable. Yoshi isn't fond of the rain or the snow, but will follow Eli outside and get wet if it means having a chance to play!

CHR is a wonderful organization. We have adopted three dogs through them over the years, and each experience has been beyond positive. The person who runs the organization and the foster parents who care for the dogs are amazing. Thank you for all you do for these fur babies!

What can I say about Caring Hearts. A year ago we adopted a dog we name Zoey. I know it is been said thousands of time before, but we did not rescue her. She is now so much a part of our family (we have an 8 year old Havaneese), we don't know what it was like without her in our lives. She brings us so much joy I am not much of a picture taker, so I don't have a photo to add.
Caring Hearts is an excellent organization that does wonderful work. They are very careful about who adopts their animals, including a home visit. This organization is run by caring individuals who give all they have and deserve to be named one of the great nonprofits.
I adopted my sweet Bentley from Caring Hearts Rescue almost two years ago. Sabine was great in helping me choose the right dog to best fit with our family dynamic. She allowed me to foster him before deciding to adopt to make sure the fit was perfect for us and he was. He's a cherub and I couldn't imagine our home without him in it.
Love can be found when you least expect it. It can be found driving down an old country road, just setting in a ditch, or when a furry friend needs a new home because either the former owners were abusive, or they no longer fit in the family plans.
My wife and I adopted Emerson when he was 14. Going into the adoption, we knew there were several major health issues the little guy was suffering from, but this did not deter us. On the contrary, it made us love him even more, and we were determined to give him a lifetime of love and care. We lost Emerson after only one year. This left a huge void in our hearts. Losing a pet is a horrible ordeal. Especially, when that loved one was so innocent, and wanted nothing more than to give, and receive love.
Upon chance, my wife came across the site for Caring Hearts Rescue, saw a picture, and instantly fell in love with Henry, an 8 year old Pomeranian, in need of a new, forever home.
The entire staff at Caring Hearts Rescue did an amazing job of walking us through the adoption process; answering all our questions, and most importantly, ensuring we were the perfect fit for Henry. Both Sabina, and Henry's foster mom, Debi were wonderful from start to finish. My wife still keeps in contact with them both when we have any additional questions, or we just want to share any proud parent photo's of Henry.

We adopted our furbaby Ladybug from Caring Hearts almost 2 years ago. They were very careful in placing her in the right home. We were able to meet and talk to her fosters Edgar and Linda; Buggy was well taken care of and loved when with them. Thank you Caring Hearts for rescuing her from the Animal Shelter, loving her, and letting us adopt her.
Several years ago I adopted a female shihtzu from this rescue. She had lived in.a crate for seven years & had never touched grass, concrete..etc. This rescue is the most compassionate, hard working group I've ever encountered. Any dog they rescue gets immediate medical attention, special handling, training, u name it. Before a dog is put up for adoption they ensure the dog is ready to be adopted. They are very careful to whom a dog goes to and they are very serious about home visits. They provide classes in training, grooming, etc. They develop creative ideas for fundraising. This is a top notch rescue with a wonderful group of people that truly care about the dogs..Joni Wood
LOVE Caring Hearts Rescue! You will never get so much help, advice, training, and appreciation from a rescue when you adopt a dog than you will from this rescue. CHR rescued Lobo and allowed this neglected dog to live a wonderful life with us despite his disabilities (had to have
leg removed and suffered joint immune issues due to previous owner neglect). He has always been the most positive, can-do, loving dog with more character than you could ever imagine. :)
Caring hearts is always there to help abandoned and neglected dogs. They come in and offer medical care the dogs have desperately needed for so long. They are true angels to rescue dogs.
I am a foster home, transporter and repeat adopter. Caring Hearts Rescue is run by folks who genuinely care for the dogs. They are committed to education and to making the best possible placement for each dog. And they are there to support you with any issues that may arise.
I just started working with Sabina this year as one of her foster mom's! I have always wanted to do this! This has been the greatest experience! Sabina goes above and beyond to help one of the pups! We even ended up adopting one of our fosters! Charlie and he is a love! I can't say enough about Caring HEARTS Rescue! And I can't say enough about Sabina! She has a heart of gold but she is tough she will not let any of her pups suffer in anyway!! She truly loves the dogs! She has also been such a teacher to ME! I thought I knew alot about dogs and their care and training but she knows more! She is a wealth of information as I also tell adopters!!! If she can't answer it she will find out! Its been the most rewarding experience for me and I am so happy I did this!!!
We became foster parents to assist Caring Hearts Rescue and was contacted almost immediately regarding some rescued dogs from a Korean slaughter hose. We took in one of the Shih Tzus named Moca and meet the plane at Dulles Airport. The poor baby arrived in a small carrier with another dog in it. Dirty and tired, he was very happy to get out of that kennel. After two weeks of fostering, we feel in love with this little boy and made the request to adopt him. Caring Hearts Rescue made gnat happen quickly and smoothly and e are the proud parents of Moca (now named Geordi).
Fabulous, caring rescue organization. They take such excellent care of their rescue dogs and make sure they have all the medical and other attention they need. My rescue dog, Lilly was in terrible shape when she was found in 2014. The "rescue mom" fostered her for 10 months and they spent a lot of money bringing her to the point where she could be adopted. Caring Hearts made sure I got everything I needed and has supported me since then. I can't say enough good things about Caring Hearts. They truly deserve to be a top-rated nonprofit.
I adopted my wonderful dog Tucker from Caring Hearts. His foster mom had given him fantastic care and he was friendly and loving right from the first moment we got him. He is the best dog I have ever had, and people who volunteer for Caring Hearts, truly have caring hearts. Thanks so much for enriching our lives.

This is Dakota. I give thanks every single day for rescuing Sweet Dakota. She was in a shelter and was going to be put down because she was sick. This place is AMAZING ! I adopted Annie from CHR and they have been great. Meridith had Annie for about a month and worked with her on some of her issues and I have a wonderful new addition to my family . I believe in this rescue so completely that I have a donation set up for every month straight out of my paycheck. I wish it could be more and maybe it will one day . Sabina makes sure you know everything about the dog you have chosen and provides medical records as well. A wonderful organization .

We adopted our toy poodle Princess from CHR I think it is not natural or ethical to breed toy dogs for several reasons but Princess was a good fit for me ,our other dogs and our 23 yr old godson
I got Tucker through Caring Hearts Rescue. His family no longer wanted him when they had a baby. I already had a Maltese but decided to get another. He did come with fears and insecurities. CHR offers free classes to help the rescues with there issues. Tucker's a sweet boy and I'm so happy that I adopted him.
We just adopted our 2nd furbaby from Caring Hearts and found this experience just as rewarding as our first time. Maury, our new addition, is a ham and fits in so well with our family. We are so thankful for everything that the staff at CHR does for these little lost souls. I would highly recommend them to anyone thinking about adopting.
After losing our last 'child' to severe health issues, it took us awhile before being ready to adopt another 'unwanted' precious soul. When we were ready, we began our search (we prefer terriers) through 'breed support' groups, as well as online, e.g., PetFinders.com.
Then one day, there she was, a young Westie whom we named "Daisy". Caring Hearts was very professional and prompt in assisting and approving us (including the ever-important 'home visit', at which Daisy wandered all through our home, upstairs and down, finally coming to us where we were being interviewed by her foster mom, whence she made it clear that "I am home".
Since then, we've become aware of all the various efforts and programs Caring Hearts has undertaken to save so many unwanted pets, even arranging for needed medical care to save these poor souls. The dedication of this organization appears to be without bounds.
(And we frequently make donations to help in their efforts, we are so grateful for their assistance in bringing the 'light of our lives' into our home.)
As all the other reviews indicate, Caring Hearts cares. And they care about humans as much as they care about animals. When we lost the little (7-lb) Cockapoo we'd had for 15 years, I mourned her passing and for a long time couldn't even think about another dog. Eventually, though, the desire for canine companionship got the best of my wife and me. We found Chester's picture on a website, and through CHR arranged a visit to his foster home, where Peggy told us what she knew of his background. She arranged a second visit so we could talk to Sabina from CHR about his fear-aggression. With her advice and help from a trainer, we've learned how to manage that, and he has become a loving and much-loved member of the family. More than anything (even treats), he craves the touch of his human companions.
We have to be away in March, for me to get some specialized surgery in California, and worried about leaving Chester. Both Peggy and Sabina have offered to take Chester in while we're gone. "Caring Hearts" describes everyone associated with this non-profit organization.
Caring Hearts Rescue is a wonderful organization, aptly named because it is run by people with BIG caring hearts! I personally have not adopted from them (yet) as I already have a rescue dog, but I have first-hand knowledge of their good works. I have made several donations over the years because they are truly a non-profit organization that uses the donations for the sole cause of helping rescued dogs.
Caring Hearts is so appropriately named because of the work they do and how they do it. Our family adopted Petey a little over a year ago. After seeing his story and the fact that he lost one eye, I knew he was the dog for us. Working with Caring Hearts is like working with family, they are always there to support and encourage you. Petey is just a "little" spoiled now but he has been a great little brother to our older dog that is have difficulties. So much so that Petey guides our older dog when he is scared in the dark or gets anxious. I can't thank Caring Hearts enough for all of their hard work, the effort they put into each and every dog, and for really supporting both the dogs and their owners as the transitions are made. Thank you as our home is much happier with Petey. We love him so.
We adopted Phillip from CHR this spring. This little guy came from a horrific situation. His owner was stabbed to death in front of him. To make matters worse, he had been dumped in a kill shelter. CHR found him there simply terrified. They took a chance on him and over the course of a few years worked extensively with him to decrease his fear, anxiety, and OCD tendencies. To sum up in a sentence--they saved him. He was just what we were looking for when we unexpectedly lost of Shih Tzu. Phillip helped heal that raw spot left on our hearts. Our little guy still has a few quirks but we just call that personality!! Thanks CHR.

I have only good things to say about this organization. We adopted an adult dog from them a little over a month ago. Phillip (read about him on CHR blog) had experienced a very hard time before these folks got him. With a LOT of hard work on their part a little dog that was slated to be euthanized blossomed into a loving little bundle of fur. He did not tolerate being touched and had other mental issues going on. Now you can not sit without "Sir Velcro" getting in your lap! Yes, there is an application process and yes it does take a little time. I feel this is in place to make sure that the animal goes into the right type of situation. Phillip needs quiet so a home with a lot of traffic or small kids would not be a good fit for him. As much as he had been mistreated and bounced around I really do understand the need for that process. How heartbreaking it would be to have an animal go to a home only to be returned and have to start all over again. The support we received before bringing Phillip home as well as afterwards has been fantastic. There is no question too small to ask that we do not receive a quick and intelligent response. These folks really do know what they are doing! They have even volunteered to board my little guy in their homes when we travel so he does not go through the trauma of a kennel. To me all of this means that the dogs truly do come first.
I adopted two dogs from Caring Hearts Rescue. One is a puppy mill survivor and initially had a lot of behavioral issues. Her background and behavioral issues were all divulged to me so there were no surprises. I received a lot of support and advice from the organization on how to manage these behaviors, which made all the difference. In contrast, the first dog I ever adopted came from a large DC-area rescue (that will go un-named) which provided me with no background information about my dog nor any advice on how to deal with his many behavioral problems. I was a brand new dog owner at the time and was overwhelmed. The support that Caring Hearts organization offers adopters is exceptional and for that reason I am giving it 5 stars.
Caring Hearts Rescue has been great to work with! They really look out for what is best for the dogs. That upsets some people because , we'll...people what what they want, and if their demands aren't met they get angry. Matching dogs to the very best homes that will insure they have a lasting and loving FOREVER home is a difficult process. There are always more applicants than dogs. As well, asian breeds are time, labour, and money intensive, many people who have not owned them before don't know this about them. Many of the dogs in this rescue are from tough situations and need special care so they need special homes too. Dog lovers should understand the dogs needs come before people's day to day desires.
Our experiences with Caring Hearts have shown that their loyalty and dedication is to the dogs in rescue. A big thank you from Sasha and Buddy for your life saving efforts.
This is the BEST, MOST PROFESSIONAL, HIGH QUALITY rescue I have ever worked with!!! I have adopted two Shi Tzus from them 4 years apart. Each time they provided excellent vet care for the rescued dog, top-notch fosters to care for them prior to adoption, ongoing educational support and training to the fosters to help ensure that the rescued dog was socialized properly and ready to be adopted. Sabina is a miracle worker with dogs that have fears, aggressive behaviors, or any other social issues. She will not allow them to be adopted until she and the fosters have worked through the issues and retrained the dog. They work hard to ensure that they are making the best matches for each family. The volunteers at this rescue are kind, compassionate, professional, knowledgeable, honest, loving, and helpful. I am so thankful that there are such caring, trustworthy, dedicated, loving people who will go to any expense to rescue, help, love,and prepare these precious furbabies for their forever homes!
Just look at the transformation of my latest adopted dog who was a victim of a hoarder. Our precious fur-baby has been given a new chance at life, thanks to this rescue. We feel so blessed to have found this rescue and will definitely adopt from them again as well as support them with our ongoing donations so that they can continue to provide the best care for the dogs they rescue ! They deserve the highest rating for their top notch rescue work!
Both of my girls were adopted from Caring Hearts Rescue. My oldest daughter was adopted in 2009 at the time we got her, she had been through a very abusive situation with an electric collar that caused a patch of hair on her neck to be burned off and not grow back for over 4 years, not to mentioned that she was very malnourished at only 9 months old. Over the years, the volunteers at CHR worked with us on trauma recovery, behavior modification and nutrition.
When we were ready to get our second dog in 2012, we came back to CHR. We didn't get our second dog until 2014, but, CHR worked closely with us to make sure that we found he perfect dog for all of our family members including our older dog. It was worth the wait!
CHR is different than other rescues in that they really care about matching the right dog with the right family based on temperament, schedule, etc. because they really care about the dogs for the rest of their lives. Another difference is that they are always willing to help and advise on any problems that pop up after the adoption.
If I were ever to look into adding another family member, I would always come back to work with the people at CHR.
Oh my goodness - how could I forget to also list our precious, sweet girl Leah! She was one of the 2015 Holiday Angel Rescue pups as was Luke (Ziggy). Sorry about that! : )
CHR is top notch! Over the years we have adopted Eddy, Taylor and Luke (Ziggy). They carefully screen applicants for fostering and adopting-looking out for the best interest of our four legged furry friends! CHR (we mostly have dealt with Sabina) is there to support you with as much understanding and compassion that you need and gives very generously of their time. Without a doubt, we would most definitely recommend them!
The response time after I submitted an application was terrible. By the time CHR finally responded I had nearly forgotten about the application. If CHR denies your application there is no reason given as to why which is frustrating.
We applied to adopt a dog over 2 weeks ago. We got no reply in the timeframe we were promised (but did get an automated email that our application was received.) In addition, about a week ago we emailed to follow up asking if they could give us a timeframe of when we could hear back and still no reply.
The website has listed the puppys age in weeks as the same age for almost 4 weeks now. Multiple people are posting on their facebook page that they applied to adopt the same dog and haven't heard back. I empathize that this is 100% volunteer run, but it is simply unacceptable to not reply to responsible and enthusiastic potential adopters within 2 weeks. Not even a were busy but will get back to you soon email!
We have decided to adopt elsewhere after getting attached to this puppy and ending up disappointed. Would not recommend to others as a result.
For a couple months now my wife and I have sent in applications to adopt several of Caring Harts Rescue dogs and puppies. My wife’s applications have fallen on deaf ears and blind eyes. I tried a different approach by detailing our dedication to our animals so that when we get one they become our children and we provide whatever care is needed. I provided facts and figures referencing what we have done in the past. Their computer generated response stated that they would be back to me within 1-5 day. Over three weeks and several requests for response came back sorry you are not a good match because we have cats. They never contacted the vets we use nor did they attempt to contact us to discuss possible adopting of one of their dogs. We were simply ignored. After pushing them, I did get an I’m sorry email with a comment about our cats and a comment about a good fit involves factors such as a dog’s personality, how many hours a dog can go without a potty break, behavioral problems, and special requirements such as a fenced yard or someone home part of the day. A simple phone call would had confirmed that these items were not an issue. As for my wife’s request, they are still in Neverland somewhere. I have had cats and dogs together all my life and never had an issue with them not getting along. Unacceptable excuses.
My opinion is that if you are looking for a Shih Tzu puppy or dog, find a more reputable organization. One that checks references and your home out instead of just ignoring you for whatever reason. We preferred a rescue dog instead of simply purchasing one. Organizations like this force you into getting puppy mill dogs or going to breeders.

I would avoid this rescue. They do not respond to applicant's adoption requests. You send an application in, they send an automated response and then they never tell you that you are not getting the dog. They claim that they are "all volunteer" and that they don't have the time to respond, I find that unacceptable. Many other rescues keep in contact and let you know the status of the application. CHR foster parents are no doubt wonderful, heartfelt volunteer souls that go the extra mile for these pets. The rescue itself seems to be the weak link. Their attitude toward the people that adopt these little animals is at best without courtesy and at worst downright heartless and rude. When we search for a rescue pet, find one that tugs at our heart strings, apply and wait anxiously, then never hear from them is cruel and heart breaking.
I hope no one goes through what me and my family have gone through at the hands of the administration of this rescue. In my opinion, CHR is probably one of the worst administered rescues that I have ever dealt with and I would never recommend CHR to anyone.
I know the foster parents are kind people with huge hearts but the people in the front office are heartless and cruel (and apparently too busy to send out an email).
Just my opinion of my experience with CHR.
Responsive, professional, compassionate, dedicated, and knowledgeable describes the Caring Hearts Rescue volunteers that I worked with when adopting my Cody. Proceed with confidence!
My Husband and I adopted two dogs from Caring Hearts Rescue one about 5 years ago and another about 6 months ago. I have met some of the volunteers and foster parents at various events and they are all very nice people. I know that the organization really focuses on the welfare of the dogs and finding the right match between the available dogs and potential adopters. The organization is 100% run by volunteers who have other jobs and maybe their response time may take up to a week or so, however, that is not important to me because I know that it takes time to find a perfect member of the family. I also know that a dog is a member of the family and the right dog is not based on looks but based on personality and and compatibility like any other healthy relationship. When I originally applied with Caring Hearts Rescue years ago, I wasn't even sure what kind of a dog would fit into our family but Caring Hearts Rescue was a small breed rescue so, I was willing to submit an application and speak with the volunteer to tell them about us and leave the finding the right dog to the experts. In both instances, I can say with certainty that they found the right dogs for us. They also provide advice on breed selection, feeding, health care and training. It is great to have such support after the adoption to help with the well-being of the dogs.
I am grateful for the work that they do in saving the lives of dogs and enriching the lives of the people who need them.
We're so sorry for the review of the above applicant. CHR tries to give each applicant a response so this is why there is a automatic response set for everyone who applies. We do this so that everyone understands the process and if the match is not correct for the current dog they want they can pursue other adoption agencies asap. Sometimes, we find that applicants don't understand that the match is not always good for the adopter and for the rescue dog. We hope not to offend anyone when this happens and we're so sorry that the applicant above was not a right match for the rescue dog they applied for. Since there is a response set for each applicant applying we have to believe the match was not right and we apologize for any bad feelings because of this. Jen, Two different volunteers spent several hours on the phone with you trying to find a match for you. It turned out you just adopted a senior dog in the past few months and you were in the process of adopting a senior Pit Bull. We asked that you consider waiting to adopt a new dog because you were in the process of trying to adopt the Pit Bull. We asked that you keep us posted on the progress of the adoption of the Pit Bull. We are saddened by the inaccurate information you wrote in your response because we had spent so much time on phone calls and numerous emails. We hope that everything is working out with your two newly adopted dogs and hope you find what you are looking for.
