Mission: The mission of careyes foundation is to catalyze innovative programs related to education, sports, ecology, and the arts in order to improve the well-being of local communities along the south pacific coast of jalisco, mexico.
Programs: Each year, careyes foundation invites a series of mexican and international visual artists for a residency that generally lasts one month, including studio workspace and materials. The program focuses on collaborations with local schools to produce workshops with children. The program is essential to the cultural exchange that the foundation promotes. Additionally, artists have the option of staging an exhibition, discussion, performance, or screening for the community, allowing diffusion of the foundation's programs around the world. We did not have any residencies in 2017 as the art board decided to restructure the program to better align with the scope of the foundation, with plans to reinstate the program in 2018. The foundation has also initiated a partnership with the fundacion jose cuervo to open a music school in 2018, thus providing local children and adults with consistent exposure to artistic instruction. In addition to the expenses being reported in part ix of this return, there were in-kind gifts of $1,875.
for more than 35 years, the careyes community has worked to protect sea turtles nesting in the area. In 1983, only 10 turtles were laying eggs in the region. By 2017, 1,493,607 sea turtles of four species hatched on careyes beaches and made it safely to the ocean. A team of four watchmen patrolled the careyes beaches all year round to ensure the protection of turtles and their nests from predators. In 2017, a record of 2,296 turtles nested and 147,968 turtles hatched and made it to the sea. A special keeper in playa tapeixte was hired for four months directly by the foundation to camp and guard the beach due to an increase in nesting hawksbill turtles. In addition to the expenses being reported in part ix of this return, there were in-kind gifts of $24,709.
careyes foundation has produced the first three books in a series of custom-made english-spanish textbooks, tailored specifically to the educational needs of elementary school children in rural areas. This series and accompanying curriculum will provide them with the necessary tools to become productive and successful members of their communities. Through this program, 900 children in 10 villages receive weekly lessons delivered by volunteer english teachers. Our sports & recreation program (srp) also serves the same communities, with the goal of promoting an active lifestyle and developing values such as discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. Under the supervision of a professional player, the foundation operates two bike polo schools, with 60 children from five villages participating in the sport in 2017. In 2016, the srp expanded to offer community bike rides in each of the 10 communities we serve to encourage physical fitness while instilling an appreciation for nature in children and adults. In 2017, careyes foundation organized 12 trips, often bringing together the children of two neighboring villages for a joint event, with an average of 31 children and 5 adults participating each time.
