Living with advanced cancer, I have found this organization to be my haven. They offer professionally-facilitated support groups, educational classes, and activities for those dealing with cancer and for their caregivers. The volunteers who make it all happen are some of the nicest people you could ever meet, and the organization is first-rate. There are many ways to ease the burden of a cancer diagnosis; Cancer Support Community is providing an invaluable service. Young or old, rich or poor, male or female-- this place somehow manages to make a diverse group feel like we are a family. They even offer onsite childcare during most of our meetings and activities, so young moms and dads can participate.
Cancer Support Community is awesome. Thanks to this upbeat and supportive atmosphere, we feel empowered and (most importantly) we feel ALIVE. I don't know how they can possibly do it all as a non-profit in today's economy, but they do it well.
As a breast Cancer survivor let me tell you this was the place that I found peace and a sense of belonging. The entire clubhouse, workers, volunteer, patients, and the families are a tremendous empowering source. We learn to depend on ourselves and that it is okay to ask for help. We learn how to focus any anger on positive things meaning that there is really no time for anger. It is a family oriented atmosphere no matter your race, sex, ethnicity, whether or not you have insurance, drive a car or ride the bus. CSC is there for you and the family, so if you know of anyone who is going through or may be even lost a love one due to cancer yes they support groups for that as well send them to the house with the red door on Oak Lawn they are always welcome.
