Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Cancer, Health

Mission:

The Cancer Prevention and Treatment Fund fights cancer by helping children and adults across the country reduce their risk of getting all types of cancer, and assisting patients to choose the treatments that are most likely to help them.

As the largest program of the National Center for Health Research, the Cancer Prevention and Treatment Fund has a unique ability to fight for affordable and effective cancer treatments, to conduct and scrutinize research that can be used to prevent cancer, and to help patients get the best possible treatment.

Too many medical and health decisions are influenced by sales pitches you may not even be aware of -- companies convincing doctors to prescribe their products, and health providers are selling their services. The Cancer Prevention and Treatment Fund is different: we don’t accept funding from companies that make medical products, so you can trust our advice to be unbiased. We examine the facts and help empower women and men to get the best possible cancer care and to avoid exposure to products or medications that can cause cancer. We are also nonpartisan and fight for better programs and policies to help Americans stay safe, healthy, and cancer-free.

Programs:

We help children and adults reduce their risk of getting all types of cancer, and assist them in choosing the safest and most effective treatments. We carefully analyze research by scientists around the world, and draw conclusions about the best strategies for preventing and treating cancer. We work on an individual, state, and national level to fight cancer and to improve your health.

Here are just a few of the strategies we use to get information out to thousands of people across the United States and around the world:

  1. We offer a free online hotline about cancer treatment and prevention (info@stopcancerfund.org). This hotline is used by thousands of people in all walks of life to answer your specific questions about what treatments you are considering or ways to prevent yourself or loved ones from getting cancer.
  2. We get toxic and cancer-causing chemicals banned from homes and communities and off the shelves of your local stores. You shouldn’t have to be a scientist to figure out which products are safe for your family every time you go shopping.
  3. We develop free booklets and have many articles on our website for patients and their family members so they have the information they need to get the best possible cancer treatment. Rather than just saying, “Ask your doctor,” we give them the information they need to talk to their doctor about their options.
  4. We provide free continuing medical education courses for doctors, nurses, and other health professionals. Most continuing medical education courses are developed by pharmaceutical companies, and that can bias the content. Ours are developed without funding from any companies with a financial interest in what we are teaching.
  5. We fight for laws that will help improve the health and safety of all Americans, and testify before Congress, state governments, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to make sure that all medical products sold in the United States are safe and effective, and that products in our homes and communities will not cause cancer.
  6. And for fun, once a year we celebrate the people who have inspired us and made our lives better at a wonderful awards luncheon at the Mayflower Hotel in May! Our Health Policy Heroes are men or women who have made a major contribution to public health. Past honorees include LeAnne Walters and Marc Edwards for exposing the cover-up of toxic water in Flint, Michigan; Dr. Amy Reed and Dr. Hooman Noorchasm, who have saved countless lives by exposing how commonly used medical devices called power morcellators could spread cancer; and investigative journalists who revealed the names of doctors who harmed Medicare patients.

  7. Tell us what you think! If you’ve had a personal experience with us, please take a few minutes and write us a review!

Cancer Prevention and Treatment Fund is a vital hub that connects us to reliable, deeply helpful resources that actually frame cancer issues and interventions in their full context, with patient advocacy in mind. CPTF’s tireless research and advocacy benefits cancer patients, family caregivers, clinicians, and patient advocates, as well as journalists, regulators, and policymakers. Cancer Prevention and Treatment Fund has supported countless communities affected by cancer over the years, with 3 particular strengths:

(1) I trust CPTF because they know that “cancer prevention” must be about stopping cancer where it starts, wherever we can--not only generating better information about cancer’s causes and effects , but actually acting on this data!

(2) I feel heard and represented by CPTF because they know that “cancer treatment” must be higher quality, more affordable, and humane for everyone dealing with a diagnosis—cancer treatments should actually work to extend and improve life, without bankrupting families or adding more barriers to an already unequal healthcare system.

(3) CPTF works to correct misconceptions and health inequities, while doing what patient advocates have long hoped for: connecting traditionally-separate fields of cancer prevention and cancer treatment on behalf of health justice for all people.

As both a cancer caregiver and health communication professional, I support CPTF and regularly use and turn to their materials and resources, and hope you will choose to do so too!

Diane Zuckerman and her team at the cancer prevention and treatment fund has the right kind of passion and drive to help connect individuals suffering from cancer with the newest and most helpful literature on specific cancer research publications. She just simply wants to help patients see through the often confounding literature that is out there in times of urgent need.

Many family and friends have found themselves in a quandrie about their best course of action in treating their cancer diagnosis. As a matter of supporting their journey, I refer them to the Cancer Prevention and Treatment Fund as a resource for trustworthy information. This organization studies the research and trials for best practices in scientific evidence. As a non-profit, their recommendations on prevention and treatments are always independent of industry influence, and take into consideration the risks, benefits, quality of life, and the outcomes that patients care about most. They have been an invaluable partner to many searching for answers to their cancer related questions. I trust the integrity of the Cancer Prevention and Treatment Fund to work on behalf of what is best for patients.

The Cancer Prevention and Treatment Fund is always available to assist patients and patient advocates who need information or are working on improving medical treatments and information. The CPTF has accurate evidence-based and unbiased health information. Their knowledge of medical research and the history of drugs and device treatments is crucial in helping ordinary people, real patients and advocates, understand both the past as well as the present treatments and regulations. CPTF’s willingness to share their hard earned knowledge with patients and advocates enables them to focus on issues that are most important. CPTF does not accept money from the pharmaceutical or device industry so they are truly an independent and reliable source for accurate information about drug treatments and device safety. As a patient advocate, I am so grateful that the CPTF exists.

It's thanks to CPTF that our small non-profit was able to convince lawmakers in our state legislature and our county council that we were RIGHT. CPTF helped us show that the materials in synthetic turf and synthetic playgrounds are dangerous --toxic, carcinogenic and endocrine disrupting. CPTF's well-respected profile gave us the credibility that we could not have achieved by ourselves, as non-scientists and "just" civic activists. It was so important to our advocacy, to be able to call on CPTF for independent and authoritative testimony in support of our case. The folks at CPTF clearly have tremendous passion for their work, and we are grateful for their collaboration.

Prevention and Treatment Fund. The fund does an outstanding job in terms of providing objective useful Information in it’s areas of interest. These include cancer prevention, the risk of mastectomy‘s, and the health hazards of artificial turf. The fund primarily serves the needs of. women and children. What’s most impressive is the Fund does its work with a small staff of about five FTEs and a small budget. The CEO, Dr. Diana Zuckerman, has a. national reputation in the areas of health prevention and policy. She has written numerous monographs And articles and is frequently quoted in the national press, including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington post. Of the many not for profits I have been affiliated with, I have found the cancer prevention and treatment fund to be the most efficient in achieving its mission. Sincerely, Alan

The work being done by the Cancer Prevention and Treatment Fund is incredible and its newsletters wonderfully helpful! My daughter is using them in her classes, teaching health to high school students, and the articles provide useful, fabulous information. The breadth of articles - indicating the helpful, public-focused research they do - is incredible and certainly worthy of support! They are to be applauded and supported for their efforts.

I trust this organization to give me unbiased medical information - both in their newsletters and also when contacting them directly. This has ranged from the treatment of breast cancer, to health issues involving undocumented immigrants, to anorexia in children, to COVID-19 testing of healthcare workers, and more. I am grateful that such an organization exists, especially now when politicians are attempting to invade science and public health for non-medical goals.

It is not an understatement to say that the Cancer Prevention and Treatment Fund serves as one of the most important nonprofits providing consumers with unbiased, essential and life saving information about cancer and related health information. Their research is top notch and they take no funding from the pharma industry, which makes their services even more valuable. Patients and their families have come to trust the fund as a trusted resource during the most stressful of times, and their services have become even more essential during the COVID 19 pandemic.

When my mother was diagnosed with late stage lung cancer, the Cancer Prevention and Treatment Fund was the organization I most trusted to help my family navigate treatment options and questions around palliative care. Dr Zuckerman and staff are renown for scrutinizing research and synthesizing findings into information that patients, family members and health care providers can understand and use. Unlike so many other cancer nonprofits, the Cancer Prevention and Treatment Fund NEVER accepts donations from pharmaceutical companies which is how you can know that their advice is always unbiased.
