Mission: California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation's mission is to achieve social justice and equity in partnership with farmworkers and the underserved in rural communities through community, legislative and legal advocacy.
Results: CRLAF has over 35 years of experience providing high quality legal services, leading community organizing, and engaging in successful administrative and legislative advocacy to help improve the lives of farm workers and the rural poor. We serve as a statewide legal support center and clearinghouse providing timely, accurate and up-to-date information on a wide range of issues affecting low-wage worker and immigrants’ rights and responsibilities. An example of our work: CRLAF recently settled a class action for 200 dairy workers, recovering $1.1 million in back wages. The workers were forced to work 16 hours per day, sometimes seven days a week. The boss allowed them, at most, one unpaid half-hour meal break during the entire work day and they were cheated out of their overtime pay. Some of the workers will receive checks for more than $20,000 in owed wages and overtime pay.
Target demographics: rural low-wage workers and their families, with a special emphasis on serving farm workers
Direct beneficiaries per year: over 5,000 people through community education, outreach advocacy and direct representation. we also provided training and technical assistance to 20+ organizations on immigration law, pesticide regulations, and labor code enforcement.
Geographic areas served: Rural communities throughout California
Programs: direct legal services to low income Californians; engage in class action and impact litigation; provide community education and outreach on issues that affect low-income Californians; and advocate for improvements in laws and regulations that protect workers’ safety and community health and well-being.
