Mission: The institute is dedicated to scientific research, the results of which are used to promote public awareness and education in the areas of conservation biology and ecology, including the wise use of natural resources.
Programs: California institute of environmental studies (cies) continued to work on the montrose settlements restoration program projects throughout the year. Major accomplishments included: outplanting nearly 5,000 native plants on 1-acre at anacapa island and seabird monitoring programs at santa barbara, anacapa and santa cruz islands. In addition, cies worked with channel islands national park, us fish and wildlife service, and national fish and wildlife foundation to study brown pelicans at anacapa and santa barbara islands. Additional seabird studies were conducted with catalina island conservancy (march 2017); oregon state university (april - may 2017); iws/u. S. Navy at san clemente island (january - sept 2017); and humboldt state university (august 2017). In addition cies received a $6,500 grant from patagonia to assist with "restoring native habitat on anacapa island".
