Mission: The mission of the California Historical Society is to engage the public's interest and participation in collecting, preserving, and presenting art, artifacts, and written materials relevant to the history of California and to support historical research, publication, and educational activities. Knowledge of the past enables people to understand the present and to make informed decisions that will affect the future. and to support historical research, publication, and educational activities. Programs: The California Historical Society, through its San Francisco galleries, museum store and research library, maintains, preserves and shares an unparalleled collection of photographs, letters, diaries, manuscripts, business records, fine art, newspapers and books on California's dynamic ane evolving history. Education is central to the purpose of the Society. Its collections are an educational resource; most of the programs it undertakes--including publication--are, by nature, educational. CHS has new exhibitions every three or four months on photography, art history, and significant events in California's past. CHS's programs include docent-led tours for school groups, college students, and adults; Thursday night lectures; family days and other special events. With a research collection of national significance, the Society is an important resource for scholars and students. In the future people will be able to explore the complete scope of the collections by computer. Thanks to new technology, people will be able to "look" at manuscripts, rare documents, lithographs, and photographs without ever having to have the actual item in hand.
