Volunteering Oportunities

Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Children & Youth, Youth Development Programs

Mission: At Cake4Kids, we bake and deliver birthday cakes for foster children and at risk youth. We support all sorts of under-privileged children and youth - they might be in group homes, at a domestic violence or human trafficking agency/shelter, in low income housing with or without a parent or even homeless. We aim to raise these children's self-esteem and confidence with this seemingly simple gift on their special day. It may just be a cake, but the children we bake for know somebody took the time and effort to do something special just for them.

We order cakes each month for children at this domestic violence shelter with birthdays that month. I don't believe I've ever seen children as happy as when they see their cakes. These children have suffered and it is so wonderful to see their joy at receiving a birthday cake. This nonprofit is just fabulous.

I've always wanted to explore cake decorating as a creative outlet and now that I'm a Cake4Kids volunteer baker, I get to be creative and help a child feel special and loved on their birthday.

I enjoy the challenge of making a cake fit the birthday kid's request, like one girl wanted a rhythmic gymnastics themed cake. I knew nothing about the sport, but the Internet filled me in. I designed the cake to look like the outfit from the top placing American from the most recent rhythmic gymnastics competition. I thought that she might recognize where the colors and the patterns came from.

I like it that there is no minimum for how many cakes I have to make each month. I can take a month off if I'm busy or I can bake one a week! I can choose to bake a simple cake request, like for a kid who wants a chocolate cake or a more complex cake, like the girl who wanted a rhythmic gymnastics cake.

No prior cake decorating experience required! You can make practice cakes and Cake4Kids will reimburse you for $100 every year for cake decorating classes. It is very fun and fulfilling being a volunteer baker. Come join us!

Cake4Kids has been providing birthday cakes for the children residing in our homeless shelter. We have been impressed at the quality of the cakes and especially by the fact that each cake is custom made for the child based on their color preferences and requested theme!! The parents and children are very surprised to receive a gorgeous cake that is clearly not mass produced. This is especially important for the families we serve who are not accustomed to much positive attention due to the struggles they are undergoing. It's wonderful for the children to feel appreciated and to know that someone cares enough to customize a cake just for them!

I’ve only been working with Cake4Kids a short while, but I can’t say enough good things about the work they do and how much fun it is to volunteer. I love to bake and decorate goodies, but my family can only eat so much, so what better way to volunteer than to make special occasion desserts for kids who might not otherwise get to have that on their special day. As a baker, I feel so supported, and they could not make the process of volunteering easier.

I've been with the Sacramento branch of Cake4Kids for 14 months.

I wasn't a professional baker before joining. But my skills and time to complete a cake have improved. There are so many resources within our group, and of course, online; you can't help but get better.

And what a thrill to be able to give an at-risk youth a birthday cake. This is the ultimate high.

For the cost of a box of cake mix, pound of butter and bag of powdered sugar, you can make a child feel seen for maybe the first time in his or her life. It's about so much more than cake. And yet, it's as simple as baking a cake. It's truly a brilliant concept.

I have been working with the Fairfax County, VA chapter of Cake4Kids for about 5 months now. I think this is such a phenomenal program. It is such a simple concept to bake birthday cakes for foster and at-risk children who may never have received a cake for their birthday before. Something I had never really thought about previously. It's a something I enjoy doing for my own children and an easy way to give of my time and to hopefully make a child feel special on their day. It is such a simple concept that has a huge impact.

Volunteering for Cake4Kids has been lifechanging for me. To know that children that normally wouldn't receive a cake for their birthday or graduation are receiving one warms my heart. With that one cake they know that someone cared enough about them to make something just for them. They feel love and get to feel special on their special day. For children that are going through stressful times this can mean the world.

This is a special nonprofit that bakes cakes for at risk children. It’s simple but it’s meaningful. It is a very well organized nonprofit and everyone at its heart cares deeply about these children.

I read an article about Cakes4Kids and immediately signed up to bake. Knowing that a child will get to celebrate his or her birthday with a cake that was baked with love gives me so much pleasure. The organization is wonderful and provides great support and makes it so easy to bake and deliver cakes to these deserving kids.

I heard about Cake4Kids while searching for a volunteer opportunity. I started baking, for Contra Costa & Alameda counties, at the beginning of 2017. This is a great organization. I love baking birthday cakes for kids who might not otherwise get one. I've received some wonderful cards from the caregivers about the cakes I baked (I am just a beginning home baker, not a pro.). You can bake as many or as few cakes as your schedule allows. The organization just expanded to Napa county... it's growing as word spreads. You don't have direct contact with the kids - for privacy reasons - but the staff (mostly volunteers) from Cake4Kids are really supportive.

I started baking for Cake4Kids in January 2017, and it has been a wonderful experience. I found the organization through a friend who also loves to bake. It has been an excellent way to volunteer my time because I control my own baking calendar and only do what works for my schedule. Cake4Kids is well organized. I have been well informed with all the information I need for each cake. They go beyond what is needed and always reply to my delivery confirmation emails with a nice note saying thank you and complimenting the cake I've dropped off. If you love to bake, this is a wonderful way to share your talent. It is such an honor to be able to make cakes for kids. Thank you to Cake4Kids for doing all the hard work it takes to organize and coordinate kids and their cakes!

I came across cake for kids in search of something I can do to help out, but without full time commitment.
It gives me joy to bake cakes for kids, hoping they enjoy something that my own kids take for granted.
The support from the cake for kids staff is great, always helpful.
