Causes: Civil Liberties, Civil Rights
Mission: The Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Florida chapter (CAIR-Florida), started in 2001, works to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding. We are a BIPOC-led, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with a long-term, proactive approach that prioritizes progress through individual, interpersonal, institutional, and systemic change to create a healthier and safer environment for American Muslims, immigrants, refugees, prisoners, youth, and other vulnerable communities
Target demographics: Muslims, immigrants, youth, prisoner's and victims of discrimination
Direct beneficiaries per year: in 2021, we helped 15 Afghan clients with 9 green card approvals, 18 clients took the oath of citizenship, 2 clients granted asylum, processed 507 legal intakes, conducted 60 Islam 101 Diversity Workshops for schools, hospitals, law enforcement and refugee organizations and 11 Know Your Rights trainings
Geographic areas served: We serve the entire state of Florida with our headquarters in Tampa and a second office in South Florida
Programs: Know Your Rights trainings to educate the Muslim community about their civil rights and responsibilities. Islam 101 Diversity Workshops for law enforcement, HR Professionals, medical staff, schools...about the cultural nuances, and religious practices of the Muslim community to prevent civil rights abuses from happening.
