On june 17, 2014, the hospital opened its first phase of construction of the children's hospital, a hospital within a hospital. This phase opened treatment, procedure, and play rooms, as well as the first 8 patient ready rooms. On march 26, 2015, 10 newly designed and decorated pediatric intensive care rooms opened along with expanded nursing station and two specialized isolation rooms. The finished children's hospital unit has 72 beds with 36 beds in the level iii neonatal intensive care unit, 26 beds in the general pediatrics unit, and 10 beds in the pediatric intensive care unit. The hospital is governed by a voluntary board of independent citizens of the community. During the fiscal year 2017, the hospital provided services to 17,747 inpatients, which resulted in providing 95,156 days of care. The organization also provided care to 648,183 outpatients. This included 52,471 patient visits to the emergency room, which is operated 24 hours and is open to all patients regardless of their ability to pay. It also included 28,045 outpatient surgical procedures and 23,309 home health visits.

During the fiscal year 2017, it held numerous events, including health screenings, education outreach, health fairs, and community training. Approximately 9,400 people attended these events. This year, the hospital partnered with the city of huntington in their fairfield innovation corridor project to make the area a healthier, safer, and stable neighborhood. Within this neighborhood is the a. D. Lewis community center that supports enrichment programming and mentorship for children and young adults from the fairfield neighborhood. The organization gave $1,000,000 to this project. This neighborhood is also known for having a high overdose population and the hospital is avid about helping this drop. The hospital gave $194,947 for the support of huntington's kitchen program that promotes healthy eating lifestyles. It promotes kids healthy exercise programs by providing a kids playground at the huntington mall with annual costs of $30,199 and partners with other organizations to support the kids in motion program at the local ymca. The costs this fiscal year for that are $60,000. This program has a goal of getting kids ages 5-17 moving and having fun in order to reduce childhood obesity. The kids learn about physical fitness as well as nutrition. We provide service to ebenezer outreach which is a clinic for citizens with low income ($45,837). The hospital contributed approximately $60,993 to the golden girls group home which is a home for abused young females. This home helps these girls to be able to live in a safe environment, get an education and get back into the flow of socialization. Additionally, the organization provides acute inpatient and outpatient care including services that are reimbursed for and noted as charity care. Any person is provided services regardless of their ability to pay. The hospital's charity care services was $14,891,334 (which is netted against revenues) and bad debt expense was $26,666,099. The hospital considers all of this a community service.
cabell huntington hospital is a teaching hospital that is associated with marshall university schools of medicine and nursing. With that, the hospital is leading the way in community health care and with that comes the responsibility of training others to continue the tradition of excellence. The hospital residents and interns get the opportunity to train with some of the most highly qualified medical specialists in the area, sharing insight into the latest concepts in medical education and patient care. During the fiscal year 2017, 190 interns, fellows, and residents rotated through the hospital. .
