It truly does take a village to raise a child and The Burned Children's recovery foundation is definitely apart of our village. Joseph had another surgery recently and we were once again helped out with travel and food costs. In addition to being helped with back to school clothes. The donations that were given to this foundation are greatly appreciated and much needed for all they have done for us and families like ours. We keep them updated on Joseph's progress and personal achievements. They don't just help out with our trips to the Shriners hospital, they also wish him a happy birthday, recognize his burniversary and more. We can't thank you all enough for all you've done and continue to do.
The Burned Children's Recovery Foundation has come through yet again. This is truly a blessing. Joseph had a wonderful time at Camp and can't wait to go back. Things have been difficult for him lately but he's strong and shows it. The Foundation chose him to receive a Christmas gift this year. The look on his face when he realized it meant... priceless. It's awesome to see him enjoy life. Thank you Burned Children's Recovery Foundation for also continuing to help us with our back and forth trips to the Hospital. You have helped us out in such a tremendous way. Thank God for people like you.

Hello,
My name is Megan and I am the mother of a burn survivor. My sweet baby Zander (2.5 at the time) was in a tragic accident involving bacon grease. To say we have experienced hell is an understatement. The pain our sweet baby has endured is something that was so terrible and soul shattering. I never would have dreamed we would have come through to where we are today. Zander is doing amazing. As of today, he is a normal, wild, fun, sweet 3 year old with superhero booboos. I’m writing you 6 months out from my baby’s accident mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually stronger than we were before. It’s taken a lot of hard-work but with support from Doctors, nurses, family, friends, strangers, and an incredible supporting organization The Burned Children’s Recovery Foundation, we are truly doing so well. This organization has helped in all aspects of our tragedy and healing. From my first post in a burn support group that I joined on Facebook, 15 days post accident while we were in the ICU, a gentleman named Michael Mathis immediately commented on my post and reached out to me, personally offering his foundations help in dealing with our tragedy. I can’t speak highly enough of the support we received from them! Their support helped us when we were broken. They sent us gas and food cards that we use for travel to and from our sons PT and OT appointments that are three times a week an hour drive away. They send us anything we needed for his wound care and scar therapy care. Everything from SPF clothing to lotions, vitamin E oil, emu oil, silicone scar pads. Anything we need for our baby, they order, pay for and overnight us . This support is offered to Zander until he is 18 and I cry typing this because well, that is simply Gods work. This organization takes so much stress off of burn survivors and their families during their most trying times. More importantly they offer community, love, support, guidance, and understanding. They are more than a nonprofit… They are family and will forever have a piece of our hearts!
So much love and gratitude to BCRF,
The Robertsons
I cannot tell you just how much this foundation means to my family. My daughter was burned close to 6 years ago. Her accident changed our lives forever. I didn’t know what to do or where to turn. Then I was told about BCRF. From the moment the foundation was brought into our lives we realized there was hope for happiness again. Kathleen and Michael have been there for the good and the bad. They offer support for our family and other families 24/ 7, 365 days a year. If it it weren’t for this foundation I don’t know what we would do during Christmas. They have always made sure the families they care for are given a chance to make their children’s holidays as magical as possible. When my family had to move across the country, the foundation was there helping us along the way. Our daughter needed new bedroom furniture and furnishings…the foundation didn’t hesitate to step in to make sure she had what she needed and MORE. This foundation isn’t only about financial help. The most important thing they offer is never ending love and support. As I stated before I don’t know what we would do without them in our lives. We love you!!
This foundation has been great with my step son and helped him and our family in so many ways feel that they where god sent was struggling on a daily until they started helping us
Yes they have been a big help the foundation has took a large amount of stress out of our life’s and we are so proud they are apart of our sons life and progress
Seth is our only boy, our baby boy. On Sunday, May 2, we were all out side playing as a family. I was cooking, my husband had just taken our youngest two to the store for snacks and ice cream.
We have a front porch and I had citronella oil burners we used.
When we unloaded Seth out of my truck he turned towards my 8 year old and started chasing her. She ran onto the patio and pushed Seth. She pushed him right into my patio table and one of the oil burners fell directly onto his chest. He engulfed immediately in flames. I ripped my shirt off, used my shirt to put him out and flew to our local hospital. I went without shoes or a shirt. Along the way I found a bottle of water in the backseat and doused my house shorts I had on in water and used my shorts to try and give him relief. Our nearest hospital is at least 30 minutes away. That was the longest drive of my life.
Seth got burnt in a blink of an eye. We were having the greatest of days and his life changed in an instant. The fire lasted 10 seconds. I still cannot understand how my baby got hurt so bad so quickly.
CHKD says because it was oil, his burn would continue to burn for the following 36 hours. Those were the darkest of days. One minute, they said he would be fine. The next day they would talk about multiple graftings. His burn was so unpredictable.
CHKD did debreavements on my baby for almost 3 weeks straight before his first grafting took place. That was the worst part. I can't imagine the pain he went through every day. They would bring him back in and his little dressings would seep thru with blood and drainage. Writing this makes me cry. All I have to do is think back to the day and I cry. Looking at my porch makes me cry. We don't go outside anymore. I don't cook on the grill. All of us are traumatized.
I put my 8 year old in therapy because of this. When I was in the hospital with Seth, she would call me and tell me how she wanted to kill herself because of what she did to her brother. It took a while, but she finally understands it was an accident.
Reaching out to you guys have definitely been a blessing. I was skeptical at first. Me and my husband work very hard and we don't like to ask for much. But I am glad I did. Those toys you all sent will definitely help him out at home. He has a lot of work to do. I really hope he doesn't have to undergo any more surgeries.
The gas/food card really helps as well! Seth has to have them chicken nuggets!! It's how we bride him for the doctors . And being that we live in such a rural area, the gas is a need!
I was referred to this organization by my daughters pediatrician. After she recovered from 2nd and 3rd degree burns to her legs her doctor gave me a pamphlet with this organization information on it and told me to join their program. After carefully doing my own research I found it to be beneficial for my daughter and I. I learned that this organization host yearly camp events so that burn victim children like herself can feel comfortable around kids just like them. This organization have financial assistance for clothes, Christmas, appointment needs and etc..at one point I was in desperate need for Christmas gifts for my daughter last year decided to fill out the financial assistance form and was shortly contacted stating a gift card will be sent to me for my daughters needs. Another occasion my daughter needed school clothes and the organization reached out to me to see if she needed anything for school. Me being a single parent money is tight at times and It was one of those times again. This organization sent me another gift card for school clothes for my daughter. The fact that they are so helpful in time of need makes me feel blessed to be a part of a good cause. I’m looking forward to my daughter and I being at camp next year and is so joyful to be in this organization. This organization is very eager to help individuals in need.
This place is so amazing!! They have helped in so many ways when I had no where else to turn. My daughter was burned in 2010 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 50% of her body thanks to them I've been able to get her to and from appointments that are a little over 2 hrs away that I wouldn't have been able to myself. I truly can't thank them enough they are such good people and this foundation is truly a blessing
Burford is a great kid and your organization has been so helpful to him and his family . Thank you for helping him live his best life.
BCRF has been a huge help for my family. My daughter was burned on 02/14/2020 while with her father for the weekend. She sustained 35% burns from her forehead to her torso. She spent 28 days in the PICU and 10 days in the burn unit. She has undergone 18 laser treatments for burns on her face and 4 airway surgeries from an obstructed airway from the breathing tube. BCRF has sent gift cards for numerous reasons when I fell into hardships from her accident. Michael and Kathleen are truly heaven-sent.
My daughter Claire was burned 8/20/17 - she was 11 at the time; her grandparents' glass tea kettle just spontaneously gave way as she was pouring a cup of tea; scalding water fell on her from just under chest down to thighs. She was wearing spandex shorts, which held the water close to her. We stripped her of clothes right away, but still 2nd and 3rd degree burns on about 15% of her body (so no comparison to what many, many experience, but still traumatic for her). As we pulled clothes off, she handed me her "underwear". She had been wearing flesh colored microfiber underwear, and she thought they melted. but it was actually a pile of her skin that had come off.
I brought her to bathtub and put cool water on - it brought some relief, but she was still screaming. It was so hard to get her to leave the bathroom to get her to the hospital. She did not want to leave the water! awful, awful drive - just screaming in pain - she was pretty delirious.
ER misdiagnosed as 2nd degree burns and sent her home after wrapping her up. They told me to change her dressings, etc. I tried my best, but I sent her into shock - she vomited into her open wounds - poor kid!
We went to the burn unit for dressing change help, and then admitted her given severity of her wounds. It's a blur - in the burn unit for 10 days or so? Again, nothing compared to so many, but hard for her.
She had some really low moments in the hospital, but she was medicated and ok. It was harder when she came home and faced various limitations, fears, etc. She missed the beginning of middle school because she had to stay home with her open wounds. We dealt with awful "nurse" mom trying to take care of her open wounds after discharge - I pale in comparison to the skills of the burn unit! She surfaced a bunch of triggers and fears - diagnosed with PTSD - so afraid of anything warm or hot - scared of her dad's coffee, scared of birthday candles, tiki torches at a play, bunson burner in school, hot plate in school during Cinco De Mayo party that was supposed to be fun, freaked out when we turned our oven or stove on - one time freaked out as she walked through kitchen because a pot of boiling water started to boil over - she was paralyzed in fear.
She put on a lot of weight while she convalesced and was told to eat to give her body the fuel to heal/regrow skin. She is still struggling with eating issues - had been purging and now is binging.
BUT she embraced the burn survivor community! She was a regular attendee of local burn support groups. always the only kid but kept going!!!
The group told me about a camp, but they said the wrong name, which led me to you, the Burned Children Recovery Foundation’s Camp Phoenix. Even though we're across the country, you still opened your arms to her! She came back from her first week with you a completely different person! She had refused to go to girl scout camp that summer (2018 - one year post-burn) because of her scars and her fear of campfires. But she felt safe with you all, and she started to open up to safe fire exposures again! In the 3 years since, she now LOVES candles and lights them to calm down - what a change! She has struggled a lot in the past 3 years - HUGE family stress (her dad left, and they have a really strained relationship), depression, social isolation with covid, continued eating issues, etc. She has pulled away from so, so, so much. She struggles with sadness, social anxiety, overstimulation, etc. BUT her burn survivor community remains a place of connection and confidence! She wants to reconnect, and she feels at home there (even though politically she has pretty strong opinions that don't mesh with everyone!). She finds so much of her identity and strength in the burn survivor community! The Burned children Recovery Foundation has helped her heal her own wounds AND start to give back, which brings me so much pride and gratitude! The social worker at the local burn support group started bringing Claire in to sit with kids who were recovering in the burn unit. I think it helped the kids and Claire! Covid has interrupted that, but I hope Claire returns to it when restrictions loosen. It's so important for her and the community. She talks about wanting to be a SOAR volunteer, and she's talked about wanting to be a counselor at the BCRF’s Camp Phoenix when she ages out. When she's disengaged from so much, she continues to connect with you all! It warms my heart and speaks to the level of connection and love that you showed her in her weakest moments! You really are angels!
I do not know where my daughter would be today if it was not for Michael Mathis and his wonderful Burned Children Recovery Foundation. He has helped her so much during her recovery . She was having so many emotional hardships and Michael can relate so well - being he has been in her shoes. I love what he does to help all of these kids!!!
The burn children recovery foundation is a foundation that helps young burn survivors and their families, by supporting them with love, empathy, compassion, understanding, and financial needs. I’ve had such a great opportunity to be a part of this group, and volunteer for their summer camp every summer as a counselor. What this group does for these young people is absolutely amazing and beautiful. Being a burn survivor myself and a volunteer counselor, I feel like not only am I part of something big and helping others, but I am part of a family. I will continue to volunteer and support this wonderful group, because of the work that they do and the love that they give to these children and their families.
They have helped our family more than anyone during this time of recovery for our daughter. There is honestly no way to thank them enough for all they do and have done.
“Hello my name is TJ I was burned on November 21 2013 was 13 years old I was in the ICU for 2 and a half months. It was hard and very painful. Even though I got better, I didn’t see myself the same. I felt different. For years I would always ask myself why me. It is very hard for me to talk about it. I knew I would look different and not like everyone else. Even though my family and friends would tell me how amazing and strong I was. I thought that is what they are supposed to say. The amazing people at burned children’s recovery invited me to Camp last year. They showed me how beautiful I was inside and out. They always there when I need someone to talk too. It made me feel so much better having someone to talk to that went through what I did. They taught me not to be afraid of being myself and proud of the person I am today. I even started going back fishing and hunting. Before that, I thought I would never do the things I loved before. They was even so nice to send me a gift card to get new clothes and fishing stuff. The love and support they give is sIf there’s one thing I can say burned children help me so much.
Thanks so much for everything TJ .”

The BCRF is AMAZING! I never imagined 8 years ago when my son got burned during a family camping trip, that we would be beyond blessed to have people in our corner, supporting Donovan and cheering him on every step of the way, people who know our pain and the struggles and challenges faced that come along with being a burned child, our Phoenix family! The provide everything Donovan needs and then some! Thanks to them he plays all the sports he can, is one of the most rocked out kids with the coolest skateboard at Skateboard Club, he doesn't have to be worry about being bullied for other things like his clothes being small or his shoes being worn out because as he grows so does his wardrobe and Christmas mornings are more Merrier then we as parents alone could ever give him and his siblings. Most of all though he has people that are her for him, here for us, there in his corner through the good and the bad! We love our Phoenix Fam!

There isn't enough words in this world to describe our gratefulness to have this foundation in our life. They always go above and beyond with compassion and support and do all that they can to alleviate our stress. We are blessed to be a part of the BCRF Family!

My name is Hallie and I am 13 years old , for the last several years the BCRF has been a part of my life emotionally and financially. They made the impossible- possible!
I was burned when I was 6 years old- 2 years later ( I think) i attended Camp Phoenix for the 1st time. I learn so much at camp. It teaches me not to care so much about what other say about my burn. I use to look at it as a burden but now when I look in the mirror I see a Survivor- someone who overcame what a lot of people can't, and I wouldn't have ever learned this if it wasn't for the people at camp. Camp Phoenix is my best thing that comes around each year.
Mrs. Kathleen and Mr. Micheal are such a blessing to know. It's amazing how two individuals can care so much about the world as they do... about us burned survivors. They definitely make the world a brighter place. I know they do mine- just knowing I can talk to them if I need to help.
Their continued support is so much appreciated ❤
The Burned Children Recovery Foundation has made our life so much easier throughout the years. The Emotional and financial support they proive is absolutely amazing and much appreciated. Without them my children may not have seen Christmas last few years, my daughter would not make it to her surgeries which is 6 hours away, they paid for my daughter to take dance and art classes... and much more! My daughter has an amazing support group because of the BCR. Having a child who is burned can be a very difficult thing at times but knowing you have a support group behind you like the BCRF is the best feeling - knowing your not alone in what sometimes feels like a lonely world.
This nonprofit is never failing at addressing a child’s needs and wants. They have assisted my sweet 5 year old in reaching her potential in self-esteem and extra curricular activities. They are an amazing support and an amazing non profit.
I have been the camp cook for the past 19 years and have seen so many of the older burned survivors volunteer to come back and encourage the younger children by their stories and life experiences and love because of how they have received love and support from the foundation. Michael Mathis helps so many families survive emotionally as he has gone through everything they have.

My wife and I have volunteered at the annual camp for burn survivors for the past 10 years. The camp is a great place for the kids to come together and share stories and learn how to deal with their scars when people make fun of them or stare at them. The adult counselors are available for one on one and group talks during the week long camp. In addition Michael Mathis hosts kids at the Phoenix House where they get additional counseling, love, and primary clothing and personal item needs met. Our lives have been forever changed by working with these kids which range in age from 6 to 18 years of age. It is so gratifying to see them come back year after year and gain self confidence. The older kids also help the younger kids learn to deal with their scars by sharing their own stories.
I dont even know where to begin about the BCRF.. they are like a family to us . Being a single mother is tough.. but try being a single parent of a burned child? It makes like 10000x more difficult. The BCRF stepped in a took that burden off.. they help with financial stuff.. dance.. clothing...making it to appointments.. Christmas etc stuff that wouldnt be possible without them...but they also provide emotional support. My daughter LOVES camp. I am so thankful the the BCRF.
My name is Hallie. I have been attending camp Phoenix for several years.. it's my absolute favorite part of my year. Camp get me through the rest of the year. I am very thankful for all the burned children recovery foundation has done for me.. from paying for dance.. making sure I can get to my appointments 6 hours away..making sure I always have good clothes and all my school stuff. And for sure making sure me and my brother have a great Christmas. My mom tries but cant do it all on her own. Thanks
This is an awesome place for burn victims . Michael Mathis and his team are some of the most kind, caring people you will ever come across. Michael Mathis has turned something so tragic (being burned as a young boy) into something so amazing. If you are a burned victim or know someone who is. Please do not pass up the chance to attend the summer camps. The benefits are out of this world.
Burned Children Recovery Foundation has been such a blessing to my son and our family. My son was burned in a horrible accident when he was 7 years old. He has had over 23 surgeries and recovery had been extremely difficult for him. Burned Children Recovery Foundation helped us financially when my son was staying in the hospital. It was a huge relief. My son was able to attend their burn camp and it made such a huge difference. Being around others burn survivors and helped him so much on his recovery. He didn't feel alone. I am so thankful for this foundation and for what they have done for us.
They are always available for support, whether it is an instant message or group events. Love this organization.
What an amazing organization, run by amazing and experienced people that have experienced loss and grief themselves. Burned Children Recovery Foundation has a heart for burned children and their families, helping their journey through suffering and pain. They organize amazing summer camps where burned children and their families from all over the United States learn coping mechanisms and have shared fun activities. Next to the camps BCRF helps funding for children through medical treatments, accommodations and meals during specialist visits, have a place for families near Seattle for families to stay during their treatments. BCRF help children with school supplies, sports and activities, helps families that have experienced with Christmas presents for the children and much much more. Our family has experienced a tragic and devastated fire and BCRF has had helped us through and through emotionally and financially over the last 4 years. Michael and Kathleen Mathis founders and director have been part of our family since the day Michael reached out with the promise to help our family.
We will always be thankful for what BCRF has done and continues to do for my family.
What an Honor it has been to be the founder of the Burned Children Recovery Foundation. Since 1989 we have helped over 126,400 burned children return to full and productive lives. We are humbled by the thousands of volunteers and donors who have come to support our children since 1989, because we can't help our families without them. Thank you for supporting our children, it means a lot. Blessing to all, Michael and Kathleen Mathis
I have worked with the foundation the last few years and I'm blown away every year at camp by how the lives of everyone are changed. This is simply an amazing organization, and I'm incredibly blessed to be able to witness the incredible work that goes on here.
I have known Mike since 1991 when my fire department was raising fund to help support this great foundation. The time, effort and heart that everyone involved in this foundation provides is truly amazing. These kids have endured a lot at such a young age and strength and courage that they carry everyday is something we all can learn from. To see them laugh, smile and cry tears of joy is why we do what we do. If it were not for this great foundation I feel a lot of these kids would not be able to live a lifestyle knowing how much good there really is on this planet. Keep up the good work
My daughter suffered traumatizing burns two years ago, when she was 11 years old. She experienced lingering post traumatic stress from the experience, and it was impacting her daily life. She was very uncomfortable being around any sources of heat, including birthday candles, the oven, cozy cups of cocoa in the winter, etc. The Burned Children Recovery Foundation sponsored her to attend a burn camp for fellow children burn survivors, and it was transformational for Claire! Within two weeks of returning home, she asked to help bake cookies! She now makes her own eggs, tea, etc., and she lights her own birthday candles! She continues to benefit from the Foundation's love and support. She maintains friendships with fellow survivors around the country, and she has started to volunteer at her local burn unit to give back some of the love and support. I can't celebrate this Foundation's vital and completely other-focused work enough. It is proof that angels exist on earth. Thank you!!!!
Hi! We are a family of 5, but we used to be a family of 7. We lost a two year old and 4year old in an electrical storm 5 years ago. My husband and I were unable to save them as we were assisting our twin babies when the fire exploded. One of our twins was badly burned while in his high chair. He survived but needed 20 surgeries ( so far) to help him grow. The Children’s Recovery Burn Foundation has helped us every step of the way. From supporting our sons surgery and travel expenses to helping our family heal together during summer camp, to supporting specialized clothing and specialized trauma intervention! We are so fortunate for this nonprofit. They have provided hope in a very dark spot in our lives. They have united us with a family of burn survivors that show us we are not alone in our journey. They have made physical, mental and emotional healing possible for our little guy and family as a whole. We can’t thank them enough. Please support this wonderful organization❤️
In 2012 my then 4 year old grandaughter was severely burned. The Burn foundation was there to help her and her family go through some very hard times. Their love and support along with financial help for trips to and from the surgeries and appointments helped her and family get through. Without them I have know idea how we could have done it. The camp has been a great for her to be herself.

I heard about Michael Mathis and the burn foundation in 2012 after my granddaughter was severely burned. Michael and Kathleen has been there for us in more ways then we could ever count. The foundation's burn camp has been such an uplifting experience for our granddaughter. Their hearts are so full of love for our special children. Not only have they helped Jadin, they have helped our entire family deal and heal from that horrific day that changed our lives forever. We could never repay them for all they have done.
My granddaughter Kenzie was severely burned in a fire and this amazing orginizatiind reached out to her Mother and made it possible for Zenzie to go to camp...And they are also helping them get into counseling .... I cant say enough about these wider full people !!!!
Michael and Kathleen have helped my family out so much! I’m so thankful for the genorisoity and moral support they have shown my family. My child was hospitalized for over 2 months and during that time I couldn’t work and I also was pregnant. I felt so alone and felt like no understood what kind of crisis my family was going through. After reaching out to the Burned Recovery Foundation they helped me in areas I didn’t think anyone could help in. My child had wound care appointments, physical therapy and counseling suffering from anxiety and PSTD and no one tells you parking isn’t validated nor do they waive any fees. Well The Burned Recovery Foundation paid in full for all of our travel costs and food expenses instead. This took a great financial burden off of my shoulders and I was able to focus on my child with the support of The Burned Recovery Foundation. I love how caring this couple is and supportive they were with helping my family out in the time of need. Thank you for all you have done it’s very much appreciated!!!!
I have been associated with BCRF for over 10 years, and this organization has helped hundreds of burned children over the years, especially through Camp Phoenix. Camp Phoenix happens every summer with children coming from all over the US to attend a week filled with fun, laughter and given the chance to be with others just like them who don't judge their looks. They are also taught how to accept themselves and be able to be out in public, facing all the looks and stares. The founder, Michael Mathis, also a burn victim, makes two important statements: "Do you ever see a burned child in public - no. They hide." (which is why Camp Phoenix is so important.) And: " If you don't know where to look around a burned child, just look into their eyes. There's a child in there waiting to be seen." BCRF isn't just one week a year, it's helping victims and their families all through the year to cope, receiving counseling, clothing and love.

My late husband became a member of the Board of Trustees for BCRF that helped Michael move forward for his passion. If you ever attend the summer camp, you would be touched by the joy the children have in not being different, but with other kids who are like them. One year on the first day of camp, a young girl who'd been burned on her face and arms a few months back, sat by herself, afraid to mix with the other kids. I saw her again on Wednesday, in a swimsuit, sliding down the water slide with a smile on her face. The transformation was astonishing. Michael (and also Kathy) love each one of those burn victims and they know it. Michael always says, "Look them in the eyes and see who they are on the inside." And their eyes tell it all, and that melts your heart.
I had the honor to be a counselor at this incredible program this past summer and it changed my life. I am a survivor of a burn injury that happened when I was 4 years old. Growing up as a child with burn injuries, I know how hard it can be to be a long road and struggling time to be a survivor. I was a camper at the camp they offer for campers for two years and it was life changing. Hearing the stories of what the organization has been doing for the families I got to mentor is incredible. Providing supplies for their events at school or hobbies they have, providing support to families and children 24/7 when needed, and providing support in any way possible! These are incredible things.
I am truly honored to be apart of this program and I cant say anything but good things about them. They change lives every single day, including mine! They impacting lives and changing how we look at young people with burns is important to their mission. We strive to allow these children the opportunity to just be children! Because they deserve that. Seeing children come to came and let go for a week and just be themselves is so impactful! It is such a wonderful thing for these children. Children that have been through things most cant even imagine.
This organization is such a blessing to the lives of the children and families they serve. They impact hundreds of people every day. This organization deserves more than 5 stars!
I had the opportunity to help out at Camp Phoenix, put on by the Burned Children Recovery Foundation, and it was an incredibly moving experience! Learning what this foundation does for burn survivors and their families, and seeing a small glimpse of the effect it has on their lives was very powerful. I am a huge supporter!
Though I personally am not a burn survivor, the Burned Children Recovery Foundation has been an incredibly important part of who I am and part of my own personal journey. Each of us has scars we carry with us and to be surrounded by resilient, brave, strong, and thriving burn survivors has brought more to my life that I could have ever imagined. I have found a family of support that welcomes all. I love Camp Phoenix and the opportunity it gives to everyone to rise from the ashes and learn to love not only others, but ourselves as well. I highly recommend volunteering, supporting, and getting involved in some way!
I had the privilege of spending time on the staff at Camp Phoenix this year.
Very well managed and executed week for the kids. You hear things about how great camps like this are, but to experience it first hand.......I am a believer in the Burned Children's Recovery Foundation and what they do.
I hope I can be a part of the family for years to come.
Burned Children Recovery Foundation has done a lot for me. It has helped me find so much hope and healing. Michael and Kathleen are both amazing human beings with the biggest hearts and willingness to help. I attended their camp, Camp Phoenix for a few years and I can say it changed my life forever. I've met some of my closest friends there and that is where my support system has come from. This foundation is such an amazing foundation and it does so much for all the people involved. I know they work so hard to make sure we live the best lives we can. I'm forever grateful for the Burned Children Recovery Foundation.

My daughter was burned in 2013 in a car fire- the burned children’s recovery Foundation has helped my sweet Daughter and my family in many ways. This year they helped her be able to take dance. Being able to dance has really raised her self esteem. We flooded in 2016 and lost everything- the burned children recovery Foundation replaced all her clothes- and bedroom furniture making it easier for her! They have helped us multiple times with lodging food and transportation to surgeries. Wouldn’t have been possible without their help. For the past 2 years they have made Christmas possible for my children. I am a single mother and wouldn’t be able to have given them a Christmas. My daughter also really looks forward to attending camp every year. It’s very therapeutic for her. I can go on and on about the love and support from the burned children recovery Foundation. We are very blessed to be connected with them!
I started working with BCRF 12 summers ago as a volunteer at their annual Camp Phoenix, a week long summer camp for children who have been burned. I decided to volunteer to get community service hours and help the campers have an amazing week. I had no idea that it would be the campers and the volunteers there that would change my life forever. I continue to go back and volunteer because BCRF not only works to provide opportunities for burn survivors to be in community with those who have had experiences similar to theirs, but they also work on their hearts. Throughout the year, this foundation helps burn survivors and their families work through the emotional trauma along with the physical and financial trauma. This is incredibly admirable and I am proud to give just a little of my time to support this organization.
Burned Children Recovery Foundation has been of great blessing to my family and I. My husband and son were burned in a fiery car accident May 2016. After being in the hospital for three months and my husband becoming disabled after the wreck my family was affected emotionally, physically and financially. I am so thankful that I found BCRF on Facebook and saw Michael Mathis powerful and inspiring story. I was able to get in touch with both Michael and Kathleen Mathis and were both so loving a helpful. They quickly sent assistance to my family providing us with gas cards for medical trips, food and also gift card for school supplies and clothing. My son was also able to attend Camp Phoenix this summer 2017. My husband and I were overwhelmed with joy to hear our son speak of camp with such enthusiasm. Not only did Camp Phoenix have a lot of fun activities, but they also gave my son great tools on how to embrace his scars. My son was able to interact with other burn survivors children and adults. Thank you BCRF for your help and your kindness will forever be remembered and cherished.
I attended Camp Phoenix for the first time last year and was honored with camper of the year! It's amazing to see all the smiling faces at camp of the young children who have been burned and even the adults. The children grow to love themselves because of the support They offer! Kids who lost almost everything, they learn to live their life again (or for the first time)! This is an amazing organization with incredible leaders changing the lives of children like me!
My family met Michael and Kathleen over a year ago. We attended 2016 burn camp and fell in loved with the mission. We are touched by how many individuals, families and community members the foundation touches. The significance the foundation has in family lives. It's such a great foundation, and we look forward to many more years in helping.
Burned Child foundation is a amazing foundation. They have helped my daughter and my family in so many ways. My daughter has received 2 scholarships to help with school supplies and sports needs. It helped us immensely. My daughter has also attended the camp the past two summers. It has been a great experience for her to go have fun with other children who are like her. Giving her experiences she never would have had the opportunity without the burn foundation.

My daughter was burned when she was 3 , 11 years ago. My daughter applied for a 300.00 scholarship to help with school and sports supplies this fall. It was an incredible help. Then my daughter went to the burn camp in Washington this past August. It was an amazing experience for her to meet other children who also have burns. They can just be kids and have fun. My daughter still stays in touch with a lot if the campers. She will definetly going again next year. With outthe financial assistance the burn foundation gave us she never would have had this great experience all the way across the country. We are from Maine.
My son is a 12 year old burn survivor, and one of the children that Kathleen & Micheal help. The children's burn recovery foundation is absolutely amazing. They have been helping us with funding for fuel & gas as we travel to different states for my sons medical care, they help with clothing to make him feel comfortable, hobbies, as well as tutoring...they even helped us to get the last bit of money needed to provide Triton a service dog. I can't say enough good things. We went to camp this past summer and there are no words...we are all a huge family & support system to each other and our children. There are no words to express what Kathleen and Micheal provide to my family, not only in the way of help but love as well...I don't know where we would be without them.
I have served as a counselor at the Burned Children Recovery Foundation's annual summer camp for the past three years. Since starting, I have seen such incredible growth in the campers and I am excited to see even more transformation in their lives moving forward. This organization is run by some of the most loving and caring people that I have ever encountered.
I can’t even begin to tell you what this organization has done for my son, in fact the entire family!! My son has attended their camp for the last few years and he absolutely loves it! He looks so forward to attending each and every time!!
Such a wonderful organization that has helped so many from all across the country. I have been apart of this organization for the past 26 years helping to raise funding do you know why?? Because nothing makes you feel as good inside as helping a young child and seeing them smile from the inside out. I would encourage everyone to get involved at some level with organization.
In 2008 I was on a group ride that went to the camp to support these wonderful kids. My heart was never the same! I have spent the following years bringing more riders and groups to this event and will continue to raise funds for them!
Attended a biker event this Summer where the children could go on rides. The goodwill generated by the organizers, participants, and the children refreshed my soul and reminded me there is goodness in many.
I can't tell you what this organization has meant not only to my daughter who has had the priviledge of going to camp Phoenix over the past three years but to our family as well. While her scars are not as aparent as others, she has them both physically and mentally. Camp phoenix has provided her with such a nuturing environment as well as courage not to let her scar define her and a life long passion for what they do for others. She has already started planning for the day that she herself can come back as a counselor to pay it forward! Not only do they take care of these children whele they are at camp, but they nurture them through out the year, whether ist be with word of encouragement, a listening ear or assisting them with necessities along the way. I cannot say enough about how wonderful this group is and what they do!
I went to help other burn survivors, ended up being helped!

My first encounter w/BCRF was in the early 90's when Michael Mathis was still getting the initial idea of a camp going. I was introduced to Michael as someone who could help in the camp. I was a young Elementary Ed/ Pre-Nursing major just looking to get involved, & maybe help in the changing/ bettering of a few lives. Who could have know that i would be the one that had a life forever changed...for the better. I was in a house fire @19 days old & had been told my whole life by parents, teachers, & even some "friends" that i would never be anyone or amount to anything, i was told my dreams- especially of nursing were ridiculous & that i should hide my ugliness away from the world. I had been in a few abusive relationships because i'd been conditioned to think that a girl that looks like me should take what she gets & be thankful for it. My 3 yrs @BCRF camp as well as involvement in the foundation itself gave me a new perspective on life & on being me. As i listened to my campers stories & offered them advice & support i realized that the only way i could truly be a role-model was to heed my own words. I began to change my outlook as i encouraged others to do the same. As a counselor i was rewarded w/the same amount of love, respect, & inspiring confidence boosts that i had intended to give- receiving was a prize i never expected. I will never forget the year a Shriner's Hospital nurse, that i'd had care from, told me to complete my nursing & let me help out in the Nurse area when needed. My time w/BCRF outside of camp has been more of the same; cheered on to finish school, follow my heart, & put myself in positive alliances. On a personal note, seeing Michael in his role as father also silently evolved my thinking, i had been told not to have children because "some-one like me" would bring a child only emotional turmoil & that child would be ashamed having to always "explain me" to friends. Today, i am a nurse (graduated w/honors & recipient of various awards in my field), i am a confident mother of a wonderful, bright, & healthy boy, & i am in a position of enough self-confidence that i choose to surround myself w/only positive associations. The only thing missing is for me to return to camp as a nurse, now that i've relocated back to WA State i see this as another reality via BCRF. Would i be this accomplished without Michael Mathis & Burned Children Recovery Foundation? I honestly think not.
Burned Children Recovery Foundation: My family has had the privilege to volunteer during the Summer at Camp Phoenix for the past four years. It is a camp for children to be kids, they get to swim, play field games, challenge themselves with climbing obstacles, campfire songs and skits, see their friends and make new ones, etc.
The kids share a special bond with one another.... they were burned, survived and are thriving. They have spent time in the hospital having surgeries, recovering and then head back to school and at camp they get to share their stories with each other. As a counselor I get to see the confidence grow in these amazing children that week at camp and continue over years as the children return to camp.
BCRF raises funds to help the children and their families adjust to life after being released from the burn unit and coming home from the hospital and getting out there in life.

The Burned Children Recovery foundation works endlessly to fulfill their mission for working with children who are burn survivors. Clearly not only are their hearts so full of compassion and love they really understand how to work with children and families who have survived burns. Their camp "Camp Phoenix" offers a safe and fun camping experience for the children to be around their peer group - and feel they are not judged for their appearance and scars. I began working with BCRF 4 - going on 5 years ago and the experience has changed my life for the better. The ability to make a difference in a child's life as well as change my perspective and view of the world and the events in my life so I always feel a sense of optimism and positivity - is an incredible gift! I learned to better help my son, who is autistic, embrace his abilities instead of focusing on his disabilities. I look forward to many more years of seeing these children grow up and making incredible friends! -Selene
Thank you for providing this space to give feedback on the Burned Children Recovery Foundation. For several years my family and I have had the privilege to volunteer at this camp. We have seen first hand the survivor forward mindset that is instilled in attending campers and staff. It has been rewarding to include members of the community and the families of young campers, and to see their personal growth and reaching out to connect to the future and opportunities. Finally, we consider this organization to be one that unites people around the purpose of giving hope and love to young people who need it. The burns community is better for having the founders, the board members, and the whole camp as a small part of what the BCRF offers to survivors and families. It has been our honor to give, serve, and share supporting the BCRF with the Everett Firefighters Association for many years.
I have been the camp cook for the past 15 years for Camp Phoenix. It is a privilege to do so and watch these children grow and develop a strong survivor character over the years. Michael Mathis is a wonderful role model and the kids come first. The kids are encouraged to treat others as they would like to be treated, to see a person from the inside out, and to be a mentor for someone else. The camp is made up of children ages 18 and younger from all over the United States and counselors that devote their vacations to loving these kids, and some even traveling from afar at their own expense just to be there for them. We are a family!
I have spent 2 years at Camp Phoenix in Washington State. It was a wonderful experience I plan on doing for years to come. Everyone at camps volunteers there time for these children what a humbling experience . I can't say enough of the time and effort that Michael and Kathleen spent for this cause. Thank you for the opportunity to share this.
Sincerely
Joseph M Rukse Jr
Started attending this camp around 2009. I was burned when i was 3 years old and have been attending camp my entire life. The burn children recovery foundation has helped me grow for the better. Everyone who attends camp pheonix is my family and i hope they always will be there like they were for me growing up
I am a 2-time burn survivor. Our firefighter son encouraged me to apply as a counselor at the Burned Children Recovery Foundation Camp Phoenix. It was an amazing experience for me as a burn survivor and counselor as well as the campers. I have been to church camp as a youth. I have been to Scout camp as a youth as well as an adult leader. I felt more love from the campers and staff at Camp Phoenix than from any of these previous camp experiences (and they were all good). I can’t wait for Camp Phoenix next year!
Our organization has supported the BCRF and Camp Pheonix for 18 years now and not only does it have a direct positive affect on the children, it helps those of us attending grow as individuals. My oldest son has been on camp staff a few years and his younger brother now awaits eagarly to attain an age where he can work at camp. My entire family has grown through our participation with the BCRF and Michael Mathis. His vision and positive message for the children and others is life changing and I'm proud to continue to support in whatever small way possible.
I don't where my daughter would be today if it wasn't for Michael Mathis and his wonderful Burned Children Recovery Foundation. He has helped her so much during her recovery. She was having so many emotional hardships and Michael can relate so well being he has been in her shoes. I love what he does to help all these kids!!!!
What a terrific organization under the operational management of Michael Mathis and his very capable team of volunteers. As a member of the Board of Directors, I have witnessed - first hand - the compassion, wisdom, and (frequently) tough love demonstrated by the Michael and others. The BCRF serves a vital purpose in the lives of many burned children. They would like to do more and with additional resources, both material and personnel, they will. Unfortunately there is a dire need. The BCRF has demonsted an ability to use scarce resouces in a highly effecient and effective manner. The summer camp, Camp Phoenix, is well managed and tailored to meet the needs of campers. Phoenix House, the Foundation's year around office and operations facility is furnished to meet the needs of the yoiung burned victums who need and use the facilities. Education is our foundation upon which the BCRF is built. The BCRF makes every effort to educate the public in helping to solve this serious and growing problem.
It has been my pleasure to work with the Burned Children Recovery Foundation for over 15 years and as a burn survivor myself, have found it very helpful. I was burned at 16 years and came across BCRF at 55 years of age. Volunteered as a counselor for many years and now am Camp director of the BCRF sponsored Camp Phoenix where we host 30-40 kids to a week of fun and discovery. Discovering why we relate to society the way we do. How to avoid anger filled confrontations. How to trust. And just being "normal" for a week, together. Michael Mathis has poured heart and soul into this Foundation and even at my age, I am learning more every summer about how we can affect change and understanding by processing together our hurts, disasters, joys and victories. Michael has helped us find the tools needed to unlock our lives from fear and shame, to find we are powerful in our brokenness. This Foundation works!
Michael Mathis has put together a top notch foundation for Washington State. BCRF has given the burn survivors a place to heal, learn, grow, and most of all be equal with their peers. I have had the opportunity to be a camp conselor for the past five years. I am truly amazed at the environment that is created by Michael and his staff to help the burn survivors from all over the United States. When the world turns their backs on these children because of their scars, the BCRF loves them and gives them hope once again. Michael Mathis walked a life alone as a burn suvivor, his vision is to never let this happen to a child that has been burned.
I have volunteered and been involved with the Burned Children Recovery Foundation for about five years. Throughout this experience, I have had the honor to meet the most inspirational and loyal children. Founded by Michael Mathis, this foundation opens its hearts to those who need it most. Although I am not a burn survivor, I have been welcomed into this community and family and will continue to volunteer for as long as possible. I have truly gained so much from both my campers as well as the people who dedicate their time to making this possible. This organization does amazing work, and I am so blessed to be a part of it!
The Burned Children Recovery Foundation works tirelessly to help burned children and their families overcome this tragedy. I have seen first hand how Michael and the Foundation have transformed the lives of these children through mentoring and guidance. Camp Phoenix provides these children with a wonderful experience of having a week with other young burn survivors where they are not judged and they can share their pains and experiences with others that understand. This foundation saves and transforms the lives of these young survivors.
This is has been my third year volunteering with BCRF, and I expect to be involved for many years to come! I'm simply amazed by what the organization offers to children and families that have been injured and otherwise affected by fires. In addition to the annual Camp Phoenix experience, Michael Mathis and his foundation offer emotional, psychological, and financial support throughout the year, including money for back-to-school supplies, Christmas break at Phoenix House, a shoulder to lean on and an understanding ear of someone who has been through the experience. As a counselor at Camp Phoenix and volunteer at Phoenix House, I've had the pleasure of getting to know many kids, and watching them grow from year to year. Many of them have told me what a huge impact BCRF has made in their ability to cope with their personal and social lives, school, family, and more. They describe the BCRF community as family, and Phoenix House as a home-away-from-home.
The Burned Children Recovery Foundation is an organization I have been involved with for many years. This organization is above and beyond any other Burn Foundation out there, helping the kids deal with their everyday battles and giving counseling and mentorship outside of camp. The changes in each kid is amazing from the time they get to camp to the time they leave. I have seen so many kids go from from troubled to grown individuals, through the help of the Burned Children Recovery Foundation. Michael Mathis has a heart of gold and his focus on helping kids deal with their scars and bringing them out into society helps more then just the kids. I have learned so many lessons to better myself, from learning how to truly love, gaining strength in myself and helping others do the same, respect, and about looking deep into someones eyes to find out who they truly are instead of looking at their outside. These lessons came from the kids at camp, Michael Mathis, Michael Brewer, and many of the counselors who have passed through to help the Burned Children Recovery Foundation. I will forever help this foundation in every way I can and believe it is the best place for all Burned Children to grow and become who they want to be. Hunter Chumbley II
My daughter was burned when she was 16 months old and she became very shy and wouldn't socialize with people and kids because ev eryone pointed and looked. She met Michael and this camp through the shriners Hospital and it was the best experience of her life. She has gone to camp every year and is now 18 and wants to return as a councelor. This camp and the direction of its staff and board has made my daughter embrace her burns and help other people and kids as a result. She, Danelle, even wrote her collage term paper about this camp, Michael Mathis and the effect that they both have had on her life. I am very grateful for Michael and this camp and their continued help of children is a MUST! This staff is awesome, caring, supportive group of people who really make a difference in peoples lives for the better!
I was one of the lucky ones what came to help out at camp, the kids are awesome, the other volunteers were the creme de la creme. When you hear teenagers telling of how Michael Mathis and his group helps them in their daily lives, not just once a year, it brings tears to your eyes. As a counsellor, I did not stop talking to the people once camp ended, we talk on the telephone, Facebook, and emails daily, and probably will for years to come.
This foundation is a beacon of hope for so many people. Mike Mathis has been a huge help to so many people in need from providing emotional help to financial. We all love and cherish him as one of our own family members as he does us thanks to everyone involved with this foundation God bless you all
I am a parent of a survivor who was burned at 1 years old. We have been a part of the Burned Children Recovery Foundation for a little over a year. I found the BCRF through an internet search. I actually thought it was a hoax! Upon initial contact I asked, "what services do you provide and are they limited to residences of Washington?" Michael Mathis replied, "what do you need?". We contacted other resources, but my daughter was denied due to her age and we had to call back when she is between 6-8 years old. Mr. Mathis begged to differ. Services are needed now and throughout, so he took us under his wing! The services provided are astronomical, from financial medical support, emotional support, a 24-hour support line, personal needs support, a week of camp, and the Phoenix House just to name a few. Most important is building self esteem and courage which allows the survivors to know their wealth and beauty in spite of their scars. BCRF goes above and beyond duty expected from mankind. From the phone call check ins, to texting, to chatting, sharing stories, memories, laughs, and tears...these things allow us to grow and accept life. Being a part of this family allows us to be accepted, loved, appreciated, grateful, and blessed. Although we have only been with BCRF for 1 year, the empathy, compassion, and commitment BCRF gives us allows that year to feel like a lifetime. BCRF allows survivors and their families the opportunity to see the rainbow after the storm, and and we are beyond grateful to indulge in its ray of colors!
This foundation has improved my two daughters lives greatly. They have shown them that no matter what life throws at you, you can handle it. I soooo love this foundation, that i try to do my as much as possible to help it's cause. Thank you mr. Mathis, for all you and your friends and family have done for Makayla and Destiny Henson. We all truly feel like family... If anyone has scares internally or externally, you definitely need to give this foundation a chance, your whole life will change. THANK YOU...
I have been involved with the Burned Children Recovery Foundation for 3 years and counting. Michael Mathis and his foundation are a true gift all people, not just the kids that have the benefit of going to camp. They do such amazing work to help the children recognize their true self and not be defined by their scars. As a person who has not experienced the daily judgement and odd looks from strangers, being involved with the BCRF has really helped me to be more compassionate and sensitive to people unlike myself. Going to camp and witnessing these children play and laugh and be free in a safe and loving environment is truly enriching and heart warming. I hope this foundation can continue to grow and succeed in being a positive light in the lives of burn survivors for many years to come!
The Burned Children Recovery Foundation has helped several children to overcome the so called beauty of this world and to begin to find true beauty within. I was in a house fire when I was ten months old. I was sleeping in my crib, when a five year old lights a stuff animal. She left the room thinking she put the fire out with a blanket; however, the blanket held sparks. 43 percent of my body is burned, but the nonprofit organization helped me when I was a kid. This was the first year that I got a chance to come back as a counselor at the camp and it was amazing to see how the camp stills help the kids rise above. The camp and the phoenix house helps the kids realize how they are not alone and they have people around them that have faced the same things they have faced. The kids learn how to face the public in a respectable manner and not be insulted when the public face our scars in an unhealthy manner. I recommend this organization to everyone and anyone.
