I have been a member of Burholme First Aid Corps since 1982. I started as an EMT and then became President until I moved to Florida in 2001. When I moved back from Florida immediately returned on the Board to continue serving the community. Over the years there have been many dedicated members giving of their time and talent to care for our community. The Corps has always kept up with continued education to insure the best of care. The members over the years have been my "other" family. Always caring and supportive. Their contribution to the community for almost 80 years is outstanding.
Burholme Emergency Medical Service is now the name Burholme is known as and was first in my awareness at age ten when they came to my house and carried out my cancer afflicted father at all hours of the day and night whenever he needed them. They only did first aid and ambulance care back then which was then like now far superior to others who moved the ill and injured. I have supported Burholme every way I can for the last sixty years, and I recommend the organization highly because they have always been and are still the epitome of High Tech Medicine.
Both The Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Pennsylvania Emergency Health Services Council declared their excellence in 2015 as the Best Emergency Medical Service in Pennsylvania and Presented them an official award attesting to that fact. I wrote a book about them titled Emergency Medical Kindness in the Cradle of Liberty - Big City Cracked Bell.
I personalized witnessed a Superior Technolgy Lifesaver when my neighbor was struck down with an additional heart attack and they transmitted a five lead EKG from Oxford Ave. To the Advanced Technology Cardiac Team at Jeanes Hospital so they could bypass the Emergency Room and bring Rich directly to the Operating Room where he was out of surgery within 45 minutes of his initial call. I still say WOW and how. Burholme and Jeanes Hospital prolonged his life with what they called a STEMI procedure that could not have been done anywhere near as timely for success at any other location in the state.

You will not find a more professional service From the calm and patient EMD certified dispatch staff, to the A+ EMT and Paramedic crew members who respond with great urgency. Burholme Emergency medical services is the ambulance service of choice that you want to walk into your home or business in the event of an emergency.
I have used Burholme First Aid Corps many times to transport my mother and father to the Emergency Room. Everyone who has come out to the residence for them has been very professional & kind as well as the Dispatchers. I have recommended this service to many and will continue to recommend them to the public.

it’s mission of “ not self but for others”. Time and time again Burholme EMS has been there in time of medical crisis for members of our community. 85 years and still serving 24 hours a day.
As a child many decades ago, Burholme took great care of my father as he struggled with Lung Cancer and died very young. Later when i was in Vietnam, my mother joined Burholme to serve so that she did not worry about me so much.
When i got out of the military, i joined also. Now some Forty-Five Plus years later, I am still active on the Board of Directors as Burholme is consistently the highest Credentialed Pre-Hospital Provider in the City. In 2015, PA Dept. of Health Awarded Burholme the Best in the State award. I am very proud of the Paramedics, Medical Command Doctors, Emergency Medical Technicians, Dispatchers, Technicians, Community Paramedicine Providers, Instructors, Supervisors, Chaplains and Directors who keep this complex intricate Philadelphia Treasure responding around the clock. The motto of the founder still works "Not For Self But For Others".
BEMS is a non-profit that always puts the patient first. Several years ago BEMS broke new ground in Philadelphia by starting a community paramedicine program that has reached dozens of high risk Philadelphians. Bravo, Burholme. Bravo.
