I first got involved with BHI, or what would become BHI, after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Having worked with Jim Ansara at Shawmut I was drawn to his commitment to build healthcare in Haiti and later expand his reach so much further to assist in the goal of bringing health services to those who suffer from such a lack of care throughout the developing work. Paul Farmer has long been a hero of mine and to see an organization modeled on his ideals thrive is inspiring!

I have known BHI since its inception and seen the meteoric rise of its expansion from Haiti where I visited its first major project, Hopital Universitaire de Mirebalais, to over 50 projects around the world. Founded by Jim Ansara and Dr. David Walton, together with PIH as their partner, BHI has consistently shown a dedication, passion and strategy that singles it out as one of the leading nonprofit providers of healthcare infrastructures to marginalized and under resourced communities. It is because of their tireless work as a team and the benefits they bring to communities that are otherwise ignored, that I whole heartedly support BHI.

In 2023, we partnered with BHI for donations of excess materials from our construction project sites.
The tour of BHI's offices and storage area in Beverly was very impressive. We are confident in BHI's professionalism and mission.
Our goal is to reduce the amount of excess materials that go into our project dumpsters and then into landfills. By diverting these materials to BHI, we are accomplishing a win-win-win for the planet, for BHI and for our projects. BHI makes it easy for our project teams.

BHI is doing amazing work to help bring partners and resources together against an issue global in scale - access to world class care, close to home for underserved communities around the globe. Their projects always have an integrated strategic vision that focuses on the immediate needs as well as the long term sustainability of health for the community they are serving. When I invest in a nonprofit, I want to know the vision and scale of their dreams, what they're striving to do/change, and how they intend to get there --- BHI has all of this in spades and is deserving of the support needed to create the world they are literally building for the future.

Build Health International Inc. (BHI) is an important nonprofit because it provides access to health care for needy people worldwide. Specifically, BHI provides the infrastructure necessary for people to access health care, no matter how complex and remote. My family, friends, and I donated to the BHI Oxygen Project because the project has a sustainable model for providing medical-grade oxygen to hospitals in Africa and Asia. Specifically, the project teaches healthcare providers and technicians in some of the most remote regions in the world to build and maintain the facilities to provide medical-grade oxygen to patients. Heretofore, medical-grade oxygen was unavailable to patients served by the remote hospitals. Without medical-grade oxygen, mortality rates are unnecessarily high. BHI will continue to be the nonprofit to which we donate.

The Partnership between ALIMA and BHI was an amazing rich and human experience, in which BHI's technical expertise helped to improve access to oxygen in hospitals. ALIMA's biomedical skills were also strengthened.

Build Health International (BHI) is one of the key partners in improving the health care quality in Tanzania. They have worked closely with the Government of Tanzania, through the Ministry of Health (MoH), to ensure reliable access to medical oxygen in the country. They have achieved this by fixing the non-functional or partially functional Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Oxygen-generating plants, which were installed in at least 4 public health facilities before the COVID-19 pandemic. These oxygen plants were not able to meet the demand for medical oxygen. With their expert biomedical engineering team, they successfully repaired the plants and impressed the MoH and the Hospital Management teams with their efficiency and professionalism. BHI colleagues have also been very supportive and visionary, believing in partnership and collaboration, and pursuing their goals with determination. I am very glad to have had the opportunity to work with BHI through the Find and Fix project to ensure the availability of high-quality medical oxygen in Tanzania. As a focal person from CHAI-Tanzania, I hope BHI will continue to receive more funding to address the remaining gaps in the quality of critical care service to patients, by fixing the medical equipment. This will help save more lives in low- and middle-income countries like Tanzania, knowing that Medical oxygen is critical for the treatment of severe cases of COVID-19 and other life-threatening conditions, such as severe pneumonia, severe malaria, sepsis, trauma, and complications of birth or pregnancy. Keep it up!

Our organization has touched base with BHI on a number of different initiatives to strengthen oxygen access in Liberia, and we enjoy a very strong working relationship. The BHI team and their strong technical expertise, extensive cross-country experience, cultural adaptability, and collaborative spirit has made them one of our key partners.

I've collaborated with BHI since its founding. BHI is really the leader in healthcare infrastructure in marginalized settings. They have tremendous experience, an incredible team, and the deepest commitment to social justice in all they do. Their work makes health equity possible, by creating the sort of robust facilities needed to provide high quality healthcare in any setting.

The work that Build Health International (BHI) is leading to fix broken oxygen plants in low-resource settings is some of the most important work happening during the pandemic because lack of access to medical oxygen is not only elevating COVID-19 deaths rates, but also deaths among other patients from the tiniest newborn to the oldest patient needing surgery. BHI is doing this work in way that will keep saving lives because they are investing in local skills and strengthening health systems for the long-term. Laticrete has worked with BHI for over 4 years as a partner in Haiti. we sent teams to work in country with their team’s side by side and have helped the with projects for a technical and product support. We are now working with them in other parts of the globe on schools and hospitals alike.

Build Health International makes it easy!

We are a distributor of medical equipment and sometimes hospitals ask that we remove equipment that is no longer needed. Recently a large hospital in Boston renovated their central sterile department. We picked up 7 large storage cabinets. Within a week Build Health came by our warehouse, picked them up, cleaned them, and is now delivering to another facility.

We are a small non profit in Haiti. Whenever we need advice or help, and contact BHI, they never hesitate for a second to help us. They are a truly extraordinary organization that is a positive force for change all over the world.

While I won’t be able to accurately summarize exactly what Build Health does here in this review, I will attempt to boil down their collective mission to say their efforts are put forth to ensure people of all parts of the world, particularly those in economically disadvantaged parts of the world (Haiti, Africa, etc) have equitable access to clean/reliable healthcare regardless of their ability to pay. The people at BHI are extremely passionate about their mission and are keenly aware of how their efforts impact the daily lives of so many people in some of the poorest countries on earth, and it shows in how they work and the ways they focus their energy in order to create the biggest impact they can with whatever resources are at their disposal. They do not have the luxury of picking and choosing what items will be available to them, whether salvaged or donated, and their team of highly knowledgeable and dedicated logistics / engineering / planning / etc personnel must be nimble, precise, and move swiftly in the plans they put in place. Added benefits to their projects include the training and education of local people in skilled trades or other areas of expertise so as to better their own communities and foster an environment where people are more better equipped to help and support themselves. If BHI cannot physically provide materials or build environments themselves then they’re thinking of other unique ways they can put their collective professional expertise and knowledge together to good use, whether it be the design and planning of a healthcare facility, logistical assistance, or even simply communicating with other medical or construction related non-profits or large/global companies with the ability to assist outside of BHI’s reach themselves. Build Health International is an inspiration, their people are selfless, and the world absolutely needs more of what they do! If I could I would give them 10 stars.

The company I work for works closely with BHI to provide them with the electrical materials they need to complete their work. BHI makes this easy for us by providing detailed lists of material well ahead of their installation date, allowing us to negotiate discounts and sometimes full donations for them.

BHI is the only "design & build" organization we trust to do first-class and cost-effective work in Haiti. They have a lot of in-house expertise and a service mindset. Despite challenging working conditions in Haiti for the last several years, we completed two significant projects with BHI within reasonable timelines and on budget. We are continuing to plan future projects with BHI when security conditions allow!
