Volunteering Oportunities

Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Community Health Systems, Health, International, International Development

Mission: We provides patient-centered health care with compassion in permanent clinics, mobile clinics, and outreaches to underprivileged individuals regardless of religion, age, gender, ethnicity or ability to pay, at minimal to no cost. We serve the underserved population primarily in California. We also coordinate and manage medical resources across and beyond the United States, collaborating closely with Tzu Chi International Medical Association (TIMA) for outreaches nationwide and worldwide. Three Tzu Chi permanent clinics in Alhambra, South El Monte, and Wilmington, California provide low-cost primary medical, dental, vision, acupuncture, and healthy community services to local residents. Free and discounted healthcare service is available for low-income, uninsured and underinsured individuals. Our free clinic in Honolulu, Hawaii serves local residents, especially financially disadvantaged individuals, at no cost. Tzu Chi mobile clinics and outreaches provide the same services at no cost to low-income, uninsured and underinsured individuals; homeless people; children; and people with difficulties accessing healthcare. Our seven mobile clinics deliver clinical services in collaboration with major and local organizations in Greater Los Angeles Area, Fresno, Milpitas, Bakersfield, San Bernardino, Santa Ana, Fallbrook, and other remote areas across California.

Results: We have 551,176 patient encounters in the past 23 years in permanent and mobile clinic sites. Many of our patients are local residents; low-income, uninsured and underinsured individuals; homeless; school children; migrant farm workers; and people with difficulties accessing proper healthcare. We also established a healthy community program that encourages patients to actively take control of their health. In order to serve more unprivileged individuals in remote areas, we have increased the number of mobile clinics to seven clinics. Prostate cancer screening service is currently available in our cancer screening mobile launched in May 2016, and our second vision mobile has served school children in Fresno since 2015.

Target demographics: uninsured and underinsured financially disadvantaged individuals, migrant farm workers, homeless people, and school children without proper health care.

Direct beneficiaries per year: 24,950 patients in 3 permanent clinics and 21,680 patients in mobile clinic and outreach events.

Geographic areas served: various places, from urban to rural areas, primarily in California. We also hold medical outreaches in other states and nearby countries.

Programs: medical, dental and vision care, acupuncture, and healthy community program services.

TCMF provides surgical masks to Clark County Detention Centers while they couldn’t purchase masks to protect officers, nurses and inmates. The COVID-19 is under control in the 4 jails because TCMF donated masks in time.

Tzu Chi Medical Foundation has medical clinics with wonderful doctors and staff that provide compassionate services in their health centers at a very affordable price. Their dentists offer fantastic care, and their acupuncture service is amazing!! They also provide periodic medical outreach events, offering free medical, dental and acupuncture services.

As a donor and volunteer since 2007, I appreciate Tzu Chi providing this platform to volunteer my time and donate to causes that I believe in. I'm happy to say that as of 7/2/20, it has donated over $5.3 million worth of much-needed personal protective equipment to over 1000 frontline healthcare institutions.

I was introduced by a friend to volunteer at the Tzu Chi Medical Foundation. Not only the staff but also the medical practitioners are super friendly and pay much attention to the needs of patients regardless whether they are insured, under-insured or uninsured. They have three health centers located at Alhambra, South El Monte and Wilmington to provide medical, dental and acupuncture services. The health centers are clean and hygienic; they also provide health education workshops during weekends. Really appreciate the volunteering opportunity with them and be able to help!
