Mission: South brooklyn legal services, inc. Is a not-for-profit corporation organized for the purposes of providing legal assistance in noncriminal proceedings, or matters, to indigent persons in the new york city area.
Programs: Housing assistance-- we defend clients in nonpayment and other eviction proceedings, as well as in mortgage foreclosure proceedings. We also help them pursue rent overcharge claims and actions to improve housing conditions: all of which keep them from becoming homeless.
we assist people with other civil legal services needs including accessing necessary education services, reducing consumer debt, addressing wrongful termination and employment discrimination and address health care needs. In addition we conduct outreach and provide training for community-based groups and social service providers on a wide range of issues affecting low-income brooklyn communities.
income maintenance- we help people access and retain government benefits. Through our secure income and benefits work, we:assist clients when government benefits are being wrongfully denied, inaccurately calculated, or improperly terminated; and we represent families and individuals for whom unemployment insurance, food stamps, medicaid/medicare and other public assistance and safety net programs are a critical lifeline.
