Causes: International, Promotion of International Understanding
Mission: An educational organization for the purpose of bridging the imposed and perceived borders that separate us by: 1) encouraging a cooperative spirit that builds understanding of our global community; 2) promoting appreciation for cultural diversity; 3) supporting projects that lead to sustainable economic self sufficiency; 4) preserving ancient cultures and ancient species; 5) teaching non-violent methods of resolving conflict; 6) promoting the universal principles of human rights; 7) and other charitable purposes or any other activity which serves the public benefit.
Programs: Fair trade cooperatives: supported cooperatives of papermakers, weavers, carvers and other indigenous artisans in panama and colombia. Affected 300+ people
intercultural exchange program: sent volunteer representatives to panama, colombia, mexico and brought representatives here to visit schools and universities.
meels on heels: continued this program to provide hot meals for 8-10 elders in the village of jaque, panama.
turtle preservation project: continued support and upkeep for sea turtle preservation in coastal panama. Secured 40 nests and released hundreds of baby turtles back to sea. Internship program: received interns from university of florida to provide skills and training in working in the non-profit sector. (costs provided by in-kind donations) youth leadership program: continued support for a pre-school and helped with educational curriculum in darien, panama. The pre-school provides materials for reading, learning ecology, conflict resolution, art and music to 15 children. The high school for agro-forestry works with local and indigenous youth to provide basic high school curricula, english lessons, ecology, and eco-tourism to 20 youth. We sent representatives to teach english, science and art. We collected a science, art, books, and other educational materials to enhance programs (many travel fees and materials provided in-kind) hoops across borders: led workshops in hula-hoop making and performance with young people in colombia and panama 60 students made hoops. Music across borders: provided violin lessons, instruments, service and repairs to 20+ youth in the casa elizabet orphanage in magdalena, mexico. Held an annual concert called viva la mujer: honoring the strength of women to initiate collaboration between groups working on women's issue, fair trade, and human rights. Attended by 85 people. Presented educational speeches, video presentations and discussion groups on bridges across borders' work and related subjects at universities, religious organizations, and community groups. 300+ people affected. Comedores de fundacion orphanage children's food: held fundraiser to support food programs for children who are displaced and/or orphaned by war in colombia. 75 people
