Causes: Human Services, Personal Social Services
Mission: The mission of Breathing Space is to provide free recovery and trauma-informed yoga classes in prisons and addiction recovery centers in Western Massachusetts. We support this work through fees for our Studio and online yoga classes, grants, and the Seed to Flower Fund for Yoga Service. We uphold to the highest extent possible the principle of Ahimsa, non-harming, through our yoga practice, and social justice and antiracist work.
Results: Breathing Space has provided free yoga classes to over 5000 people, and provided 490+ free yoga classes since its founding in 2017. Partnerships have been formed with the Prison Yoga Project, the Hampden County Sheriff's Department, Gandara Center, Providence Hospital, and many other agencies in Western MA. We have raised over $10K to support yoga service through the Seed to Flower Fund for Yoga Service, in partnership with the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts.
Target demographics: those in addiction recovery; incarcerated people
Direct beneficiaries per year: 30-40 persons per week with free yoga classes
Geographic areas served: Holyoke, Springfield and surrounding communities
