Mission: Breathe california of sacramento emigrant trails is dedicated to maintaining healthy air and preventing lung and other air-pollution related diseases by partnering with youth, advocating public policy, supporting air pollution research, and educating the public.
Programs: Tobacco control and education:for the thumbs up! Thumbs down! Project, 35 students ages 14-22 analyzed tobacco use in more than 200 top-grossing movies in an effort to educate the public and apply pressure on the entertainment industry to reduce the glamorization of tobacco use in movies and advocate for policies that would address the issue; continually updated the website www. Scenesmoking. Org, which features a comprehensive, youth-driven database that is utilized as a research tool for universities, public health officials, and tobacco control advocates, and major news outlets; data was published in the cdc morbidity and mortality weekly report: tobacco use in top-grossing movies united states, 2010-2016 on july 7, 2017. Teens on our youth advisory board hosted our annual breathe youth media awards, inoculating local youth against the glamorization of tobacco use in media.
clean air:the air quality flag program was implemented at ten elementary schools in sacramento county, reaching 8,500+ students, parents, faculty members, and members of the surrounding communities; continued implementation of our clean air agenda based on land use strategies; public education and advocacy through the cleaner air partnership (cap); clean air month celebrated each may and highlighted by the 41st annual anniversary clean air awards, where 6 regional clean air champions were recognized with 325 guests in attendance; hosted 9th annual high school art contest in conjunction with the awards with over 50 entries from five area high schools and individual student artists and displayed at the crocker art museum;revised and implemented hands-on environmental education program o24u in several elementary schools in sacramento county, reaching 1,000 students and their parents; developed and piloted new food waste recycling program school to fuel at 7 elementary schools; developed new school campus idling reduction program healthy school air campaign to improve air quality at middle schools; developed and transit 101, a public and active transit teaching tool; support of may is bike month activities which showed strong support for bicycling as a viable, clean mode of transportation.
asthma and other lung diseases:in partnership with the lung health collaborative, kaiser permanente, seta's head start program, and astrazeneca pharmaceuticals, breathe california conducted 3 parent asthma classes and spirometry screenings at 3 sites, reaching 54 households. In 2017, on two occasions, breathe partnered with the twin rivers housing complex to conduct mobile asthma screenings as a component of their community events. During these 2 events approximately 85 children and adults were screened.
