The people at Breakthrough House Inc are dedicated to the individuals that they serve. They go above and beyond to improve the quality of life of their clients, and treat each person with dignity and respect.
Theresa and Brian are a bunch of racists. They got rid of every good person there and they happened to be black. Makes no coincidence. This place needs to do better
While working at Breakthrough House, I experienced what teamwork really means. Every employee that I worked with were not only dedicated and professional, they all have hearts of gold. They care about each other as well as all the consumers & members whom they serve.
I would highly recommend this organization to anyone with mental disabilities and to anyone who is looking for a worthwhile organization to join and donate their time and money.
Its a wide open space. They have a work out center, library, a computer, arts and crafts, thrift store - all visible. You can see everything. Nothing around the corner, exposed. Get to move towards your goals, help out in the kitchen, to exercise, can help out in any area.
Breakthrough Clubhouse has helped me to keep sober and helped me with many learning skills and has taught me a lot of skills with every day living. Taught me some new ways how to be self-confident and self-esteem because in the work ordered day when I accomplish something it raises my self worth.
My experience with The Breakthough House is as a board member. I have been a part of seeing the transitioning of the Clubhouse Director and am astonished on how far it has come to be a place for club members to feel welcomed and a part of the community. The staff members are friendly to all that enter through the doors and you can see they care about what they do to help others.
The Director of the Breakthrough house really has worked hard to bring this non-profit to a different level of success for members and consumers. He has having a wonderful, caring staff support with communication that helps with having a successful team support in working together. The president of the board and the board members are ready to do what they can to educate and make the community aware of this wonderful program. I can see this program can be of assistance to many consumers that need the extra support, education and guidance to living a life they can manage and excel to the best of their capabilities with assistance from this program.
I am happy to be a part of this team effort in doing my part to watch this program succeed to a greater level of success.
Everyone at BTH is centered on helping everyone at any time. Not only does everyone at BTH go beyond their mission but because of the genuine compassion, empathy, strength and commitment portrayed, encourages all to strive for their best.
I have been using Breakthrough House as my payee service for years. Everyone has treated me with respect and kindness since day one. This is an excellent resource and I would recommend them to anyone.
I receive financial management services at BTH. Kathy, B.J. and Margaret go above and beyond to make sure all of the clients are taken care of. They make me feel welcomed, special, and respected. Their care and compassion is incredible. I also ask Theresa questions from time to time and she always answers me with kindness.
I would not be where I am on my mental health journey if it weren't for Breakthrough House.

The representative payee services at Breakthrough House are incredible!! Kathy Cheatham and BJ truly care about the clients they serve. I have referred several of my friends to the payee program at BTH and they have each been pleased. Lynn Davis and my mom Claire have worked on several fundraisers with my mom running about three marathons all over the nation to raise funds for BTH. My mom and I see the work of Kathy and others like BJ and Theresa Douthart every day. BTH is a huge asset to the community.
BTH has wonderful clients & staff, it is very inspiring to work with them & for them. I learn something knew everyday from each one of them.
To whom it may concern. My name is Danny H. I am a consumer here at the Breakthrough Club house. I started coming to the club house about a year and a half ago. During which time I was struggling with accepting my mental health diagnosis. I also struggled with alcohol, and drug addiction issue's. The Breakthrough club house became my safe place to escape to where I could just be me without judgment or fear of others know matter what. One of the few rules here is absolutely know threating behavior. Know one put any pressure on me to do anything until I was ready. There is so much good going on at the club house. Again to whom it may concern have a Blessed Day
The clubhouse has helped me to be a better person I also enjoy what I do at the clubhouse like cooking and helping other Memebers
I come to BTH to get help and I can be somebody! I feel I get things done and the staff is wonderful! The Breakthrough Clubhouse is like family!! I have been a member for about 3 years. It is a wonderful place that care about the members served.
The Breakthrough House Clubhouse is a place to go to because I have too. I enjoy listening to music and socializing.
I have been a member for the Clubhouse for over 20 years. The Clubhouse helped me after being in the hospital. There is a lot of added opportunities available to people with mental illness at Breakthrough House.
I have been with Breakthrough House for 29 years. They have been like a family to me. They have many things to offer to help me with my recovery. I, in turn show them love, appreciation and gratitude. Breakthrough House has picked me up when I was down. I don't see myself doing anything else. I appreciate them helping me get my feet on the ground.
I have been a member for 40 years. Breakthrough House is like family to me! I feel unconditionally welcome. I come to Breakthrough House Clubhouse every week. I feel very at home here. I encourage the public and community to support BTH as much as possible!
Not a positive experience so far. Breakthrough house residence next doir to my residence is a mess. The resident is being taken advantage of by an assortment of unsavory people off the street. I have spoken to the Topeka director abd the police and little to nothing has been done to correct the situation. Other neighbors have also complained about the trash and piles of personal belongings these people leave on the property and in the alley. Clearly more needs to be done to control and protect the resident.

I'm a recent supporter of BTH. I have the good fortune to deliver Public Library services to the clients there. So I get an unique window on the way BTH operates. There is a caring staff. The people who use the organization on a regular basis, are friendly, and all take great pride and ownership in what is their place. In short I'm very impressed with all that goes on there.
Breakthrough House is a great place and offers lots of services and gives consumers the chance to connect with others. Breakthrough Clubhouse has great staff members and its key here. I'm a older consumer and i enjoy coming to the Clubhouse. The Clubhouse offers me an opportunity to "vent my stack" and listen to others. The Clubhouse offers neat meals, outings and with support.
I enjoy being around others and working with volunteers and Clubhouse staff to make the Clubhouse presentable. I respect all the staff and no problem at all with them and enjoy working with them. I enjoy working in the kitchen and helping Jean and making the kitchen look good. I give all the support to Breakthrough Clubhouse and I enjoy coming here with other consumers and the volunteers, along with the staff.
I am a student at Washburn University and I am also a part of the LinC - Bonner Scholars Program. This program focuses on social change, social justice, and community involvement. I chose to volunteer at the Breakthrough House Clubhouse and I LOVE IT!! I love what the clubhouse does and they provide other programs outside of the clubhouse itself. I can tell that it is making a huge difference in the mental health community. The members are great and fun to be around! From the first day I have been pleasantly surprised with my experience and it exceeded y initial expectations. The staff is also very nice, caring, and supportive. The relationships that I am making with the members is really special!
The Breakthrough House gives you a place to go to socialize and share lives problems with other consumers. I find it easier to talk to the staff sometimes than the clients. The meetings are conversational and gives you something to do with your day and activities. I enjoy watching the art in the art room and look at the walls with pictures that have been created. The Thrift store is awesome place to buy used clothes and the ability to look around and kitchen ware is good to have. The meals are delicious and accommodate for the weather. I participate and volunteer in small repair jobs and have the ability to be successful and its satisfying. This ability helps the Clubhouse and it saves lots of money. I enjoy donating my time and abilities. I also donate when I can.
The Breakthrough Clubhouse is always here for me whenever I'm having symptoms of my illness. They all understand what I'm going through and they ease and support me through the rough times to feel better. This helps me get back to my normal, happy, pleasant self. The staff is really excellent with dealing with people with mental illness and they truly understand and comfort you. They never tease, degrade, your feelings and they make you feel like a normal human being. This is the reason we need a Clubhouse and I am speaking for my self and other members here at the Clubhouse.
I don’t know what Topeka would do without this organization. There’s a clubhouse where those who struggle with mental illness can go to socialize, have a bite to eat and have some companionship. Housing is available and a safe environment is provided.

Breakthrough is well known and well respected in our community. They do a great job helping individuals with severe mental illness integrate and be successful in the community. They provide an array of support options including clubhouse and residential with supports in between. Many of our joint consumers rely on them greatly and consider the clubhouse a 2nd home. Topeka is lucky to have them as a resource!
My current situation is this. I have an apartment I have been living there for three years. I have graduated from case management, I do volunteer work for the Rescue Mission--I now use the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library and take out books and I also graduated from Washburn Tech for being an Auto Mechanic.
Breakthrough House has, through its membership, given me Mental Health support for 7 years. We have great people working with the members to help them function in the community with success,
This is a great Mental Health program. The social support that I receive has made a real difference in my life!
Breakthrough House has helped me increase my circle of friends. It has helped me look forward to not staying in bed all day and dealing with my depression. It helps to have the different groups going and helps provide different activities throughout the day. Breakthrough House serves a lunch and its great nutritional benefit and if I was alone or at home I probably would not eat that day.

Breakthrough House is the best place to come for mental health illnesses. It helps people to get jobs and to have a special way of living including meeting new friends. There are alot of clerical jobs around here and its very helpful to other members. We have good support and staff that works with mentally ill.
BTH of Topeka is an awesome nonprofit that works with individuals in the community who have been diagnosed with a mental health disorder. The services offered include a payee program, a residential program, and a clubhouse where meals are served and time is available for socializing. The staff are phenomenal as well as volunteers who make the program possible.
The Clubhouse Manager and staff are rude to their clientele. Not very friendly or welcoming. The staff speak to the members as though they are stupid and uneducated. Not a very positive place to go for a person with mental illness.
Breakthrough House is a great resource for affordable housing for people with mental health challenges. Their houses are clean and well kept and the staff is caring and kind.
I applaud the work of Breakthrough House! They provide valuable services to those with mental illness. I have personally observed the care and concern with which they serve their clients.

Because of my desire to support mental health recovery and because I had learned about the work of Breakthrough House and the many lives they help, I chose in 2014 to raise funds via running the Los Angeles Marathon. I couldn't believe the support I received from that organization! The effort was celebrated from the start to finish of the fundraising. I had the time of my life! I couldn't help but think seriously of repeating last year's "fun-raising" and, indeed, I did choose to run the Oklahoma City Memorial Half-Marathon for Breakthrough House. I had a beautiful send-off from the members of the Clubhouse. They had a wonderful luncheon and gifts and most of all--encouragement. What beautiful spirits were exemplified as they shared. Their words came to me as I ran a tough race. These are people worth supporting every way possible and dedicated board members and employees. I have seen how much they care and I celebrate the work that they do. No longer is mental illness something to be ashamed of. We realize it is an illness that can be treated. No longer do we think mental illness is something to be stabilized and endured. There is recovery. That means we concentrate on the positives and the strengths. it is a new day in mental health recovery and I am thankful for the dedication of all those associated with Breakthrough House.
Breakthrough House (BTH) has been serving persons with severe and persistent mental illness since 1978. The "flagship" of BTH is the Clubhouse where members support one another in a community of mutual respect. The Clubhouse has no clinical staff and BTH is not reimbursed by Medicare of Medicaid for services provided.
I am a former member of the BTH Board of Directors, but my role now is to provide whatever financial support I can. I know first hand that the bulk of my support will go toward direct services and not to inflated administrative costs.
Breakthrough House plays a major role in helping adults with mental illness lead better and more productive lives. Many of its residents/members would be without any daily resources if BTH did not exist. This is an excellent organization and is a vital part of the non-profit community in Topeka.
Staff are very kind and compassionate. They are also very skilled in dealing with clients that are severely and persistently mentally ill. Breakthrough has several programs to meet the needs of this population such as the clubhouse, housing, and the payee program.
Breakthrough House is a wonderful nonprofit that works with adults with mental illness. I worked at the Breakthrough House main office as well as the residential homes when I was working on my Master's in Social Work. The work done at Breakthrough House is inspiring to both staff and clients. Breakthrough House offers superb services by professional, friendly and courteous staff.
Breakthrough House has been helpful to me because I get to feel what it's like to be cared for, have friends, and people their for me. I also get to feel a sense a hope when I am here because I don't know what to do when I am by myself. The staff really care about my needs and whats going on in my life. They care about my mental and physical well-being.

My name is Betty Patton, and I have been with Breakthrough House for about 30 years. Breakthrough has helped me to come out of my shell. I love that place. They have helped me overcome my depression. We do alot of activities and outings. We have different groups such as Life Skills, Journaling, Wellness Group, and Arts n' Crafts is good therapy for me too.
Fifteen years ago, I worked for Breakthrough House as a "house parent." It was the most rewarding experience I've had. Every client brought a different set of "willingnesses" and "capabilities" to every communal activity. This is what made it both rewarding and challenging. One didn't like the dinner. One loved the dinner, but didn't want to set the table. One wanted to set the table, but didn't want to do the dishes. Some wanted to do menu planning. Some did not. Some wanted to help with meal preparation. Some did not. Balancing these unique demands - and working through them with the give and take that's vital to a family experience is what made Breakthrough House so special to me. Some of these clients had never experienced "give and take" and - as a result - had never enjoyed the feeling of "getting" from another in one arena or "giving" to another in a different arena.
This kind of living experience - and challenging clients to strive as if they had nothing to lose - is the model for success in my never-to-be humble opinion.

I have been on the BTH Board for a little more than 3 years now. In addition I am serving as Treasurer (3rd term) Very interesting and challenging experience.
Of course our main focus is on financials and the continuing stability of the agency. Given the current economic crisis, this issue is a long on-going discussion which commands most of our efforts.
It has been my good fortune to be able to work with fellow Board members who are both focused and dedicated to helping BTH grow. BTH staff has also been very inovative and hard working. Have much enjoyed the action and challenge.
