Mission: The mission of the organization is to promote political and cultural awareness, aiming at the development of brazilian immigrants' self- sufficiency. We promote our goals through community organizing, empowering the community members to speak for themselves regardless of immigration status.
Programs: Annual brazilian independence day festival celebrates and promotes awareness of brazilian history and culture. Also provides a venue for disseminating information on health, education and other resources. Includes a day-long outdoor festival and a film festival at a local movie theater. 5-7000 people attend.
civic participation promote participation in elections through: voter registration clinics which registered over 3000 voters; an ongoing outreach program of community meetings; articles, interviews and public service announcements in the portuguese-language media. Produce a weekly portuguese-language radio show addressing a wide range of topics of concern to immigrant workers. Organize, publicize, and participate in bi-monthly immigration clinics in partnership with greater boston legal services. Produce/sponsor/participate in other educational and advocacy campaigns, including: helped over 200 students apply for deferred action for childhood arrivals program; massachusetts driver's license/real id; in-state tuition for immigrants; bill of rights campaign with the massachusetts coalition of domestic workers and the national domestic workers alliance. Field daily requests for information and help in areas including: education (early childhood through university); esl; health care; employment; workers' rights; domestic violence; sexual harassment; immigration. Maintain a bilingual website and distribute regular "e-newsletters" to a list of over 1000. Maintain a small lending library.
new immigrant health project a two-year randomized, controlled obesity prevention intervention for new immigrants residing in somerville, massachusetts that focuses on the parent-child relationship. Provides knowledge, skills and support to adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Engages community partners to help disseminate and share knowledge and findings from this study and to generate a replicable intervention model to reduce the risk of obesity for new immigrants to the us. 300 mothers and children participated. This program ended june 30.
workers' rights weekly clinics in partnership with 3 similar organizations, providing both basic education on the rights of workers in the us, and individual counseling. As needed, cases are referred to attorney general's office or greater boston legal services. 250-300 people attended; 30,000 in wages recovered. Vida verde co-op provides education and organizing support for local brazilian immigrant housecleaners, promoting safe and healthy working conditions through the use of environmentally friendly materials that protect cleaners' health and that of their clients. Co-op's 18 members meet regularly for support in their work, and volunteer in the office. Members and staff participated in 5 public health fairs, and provided 12 public training sessions in the use of non-toxic cleaning products
