Causes: Boys & Girls Clubs, Children & Youth
Mission: To enable all young people, especially those who needs us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. Members at the club achieve academic success, live healthy lifestyles, develop good character, and become responsible citizens in the community by participating in over 30 different programs.
Programs: Out of school/after school activities - 1519 children directly impacted by these programs. Transportation is provided afterschool from st. Charles city and orchard farm districts. Children ages 6-18 attend the club from 2/2:30pm to 7/8:00pm during the school year. Summer school is offered at a nominal rate at both units for children 6-18 from 7:00am to 6:00pm. It includes all the afterschool programs as well as the out-of-school activities held in our recreation centers. These include puzzles, board & card games, billiards, ping-pong, and foosball, basketball and field trips, as well as weekly swimming at blanchette park during the summer monthsfood program offers a nutritious usda certified dinner and/or a snack for each member daily and free of charge in partnership with the missouri department of health and senior services. A healthy mind and body is the result of eating proper nutritious foods that not only feed the mind but also control obesity in our youth. The food program in connection with healthy habits helps members build skills related to fitness and positive lifestyle changes. These programs demonstrate how eating smart, keeping fit and forming positive relationships add up to overall healthy well-being.
health & life skills programs - 601 children directly impacted by these programs. Smart moves (skills mastery and resistance training) is the overall umbrella program that involves members ages 5-15 being exposed to various activities designed to hone their decision-making and critical-thinking skills, as well as learn how to avoid and/or resist alcohol, tobacco, other drugs and premature sexual activity. Smart leaders is a booster program to smart moves. This program keeps teens involved in the smart moves program. Smart girls is a small-group health, fitness, prevention/education and self-esteem enhancement program designed to meet the developmental needs of girls in three age groups ages 8-17. Passport to manhood promotes and teaches responsibility in club boys ages 11-14, which concentrates on a specific aspect of manhood through highly interactive activities. Healthy habits emphasizes good nutrition, regular physical activity, and improved overall well-being. Both units currently have a garden club and students maintain it, and learn how to utilize vegetables in their daily eating habits.
education and career development programs - 693 children directly impacted by these programs. Careerlaunch is a job-readiness and career preparation program for teens. It provides fun and interactive activities for youth ages 13 to 18 to explore a broad range of career areas, match their interest to career clusters and identify the skills and education needed for their particular career path. Diplomas to degrees (d2d), is a college readiness program. This program provides a range of services to guide club members as they work toward high school graduation and prepare for post-secondary education and career success. Junior staff is a program for club teens ages 13 to 18. This program provides tools to guide young people in preparing for a career in boys & girls clubs and/or other service professions. Money matters promotes financial responsibility and independence among club members ages 13-18 by building their basic money management skills. Participants learn how to manage a checking account, budget, save and invest. Power hour helps club members ages 6-18 achieve academic success by providing homework help, tutoring and high-yield learning activities and encouraging members to become self-directed learners. Project learn uses high-yield learning activities, which include leisure reading, writing activities, helping others, homework help and tutoring and games that develop a young person's cognitive skills. Reading for success program uses proven mindplay software for students. Members complete 30 minute lessons in vocabulary, guided story reading, comprehension, fluency and writing. 100% of regularly attending students (two or more times per week) improve reading skills. Spanish club: club members of all ages learn the spanish language, as taught by bilingual staff. Lessons range from beginner to advance based on the age and experience of participants. Summer brain gain are fun, theme-based activities designed to mitigate summer learning loss for early and upper elementary, middle, and high school youth. Super readers teaches young people how to have fun with reading! Members earn prizes when they finish reading books. This program offers books, games and phonics.
