Employees and children alike are kind and grateful for the contributions of volunteers at Boys and Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee!!! I have been a volunteer with this organization for almost a year, and have been so impressed with the organization that I have asked to be more involved and plan to continue my participation past my original 1yr commitment!
This organization takes volunteer work seriously. They are professional and organized in their hiring and orientation processes. They are also joyful, friendly, welcoming, and sincerely grateful for the work of their volunteers. Boys and Girls Club has appropriate expectations for volunteer workers, while also being reasonable and not overly demanding of one's time or effort. The volunteer administration is also very invested in finding volunteer opportunities that are right for each person, aligning assignments with each volunteer's individual goals.
The children who participate in these clubs are there because they need the resources provided. They are actively engaged in exercises which grow their academics, social skills, and self. Volunteers are encouraged to be good role models in all of these aspects, regardless of their volunteer assignment. Boys and Girls Club cultivates a culture of strong community, and volunteers are considered a part of it.

Mission: Our mission is to inspire and empower all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.
Programs: Core program areas - the boys & girls clubs of greater milwaukee meets its mission by offering over 200 programs in six core program areas. The six areas include:1. Health and life skills - programs that develop young people's capacity to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own well-being, set personal goals and live successfully as self-sufficient adults. 2. Education and career development - programs that enable youth to become proficient in basic education and disciplines, apply learning to everyday situations and embrace technology to achieve success in a career. 3. Sports, fitness and recreation - programs that develop fitness, positive use of leisure time, skills for stress management, appreciation for the environment and development of social skills. 4. Character and leadership development - programs that empower youth to support and influence their club and community, sustain meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self-image, participate in the democratic process and respect their own and other's cultural identities. 5. Arts and cultural education - programs that enable youth to develop their creativity and cultural awareness through knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts, crafts, performing arts and creative writing. 6. Outdoor and environmental education - programs that enable youth to explore their natural environment and develop an appreciation for the outdoors in a hands-on learning environment. 2016 facts and figures:with 44 locations throughout the greater milwaukee area, the clubs provide safety and support during critical after-school hours. Members receive free meals (over 1 million annually), participate in academic tutoring, engage with positive role models, explore careers, participate in organized athletics and arts programs, and learn skills to have brighter futures. In 2016, boys & girls clubs served a total of 41,701 members and 4,583 youth on a daily basis. 2,071 members attended the clubs at least three times per week. 95% of club members are minorities, 86% qualify for free/reduced lunch, and 58% come from single parent households. In fall 2016, boys & girls clubs opened a new club site at bay view high school. The school's focus on creativity, innovation, and steam complements our array of after-school programming. Along with our programming for youth, boys & girls clubs is committed to serving families living in low-income and impoverished milwaukee neighborhoods. In 2016, the clubs partnered with feeding america of eastern wisconsin to offer 14 mobile food pantry distributions at the clubs, providing over 2,000 families and neighborhood residents with fresh fruits, vegetables, pastas, meats, and grains. Boys & girls club's ultimate goal is to help members prepare for and achieve academic and career success after graduating high school. Club members receive homework help, targeted academic interventions, career planning, and professional mentorship to help them succeed in school and prepare to enter the workforce as adults. In 2016, 15,968 members regularly attended power hour and other academic enrichment. Power hour is dedicated time to help club members complete their homework and prepare for classroom tests. Last school year, 80% of club members surveyed said the clubs helped them finish their homework on time. Marvan scholars provides academic support after school at the clubs through the use of an instructional software, odyssey compass learning, which allows each student to work at their own pace. Staff monitor their progress and adjust academic support accordingly. Marvan scholars reflects the clubs' strategic efforts to help our members work toward proficiency in math and reading. The program served over 2,000 students in 2016. Milwaukee partnership schools is an innovative partnership between boys & girls clubs, milwaukee public schools, and city year milwaukee. This initiative is providing necessary support to four mps schools: alexander mitchell integrated arts school (k - 8th grade), rogers street academy (k - 8th grade), george washington carver academy (k - 8th grade), and james madison academic campus (9th grade only). Through this collaboration, we have added and aligned support for students in math, reading, attendance, and social-emotional learning during the school day and after-school through small groups and one-on-one interventions. Graduation plus - the clubs' collection of college access and success programs - helps prepare members for college and guides them through the university selection and application processes as well as advises and allocates scholarships during college. Many of the young people we serve are the first in their families to pursue a college degree. Our graduation plus programs include stein scholars, sponsor-a-scholar, and bmo scholars. In 2016, 735 members (high school freshmen - college students) participated in graduation plus. The program has nearly a 100% high school graduation rate. Boys & girls clubs' career development programs help milwaukee youth learn the skills they need to succeed in the workforce. Through club programs, members are introduced to a variety of work environments and guest speakers, worksite tours, and hands-on experience as well as career and financial planning assistance. Career development programming included:" 2,733 youth explored careers and developed workforce skills through career launch. " 923 youth learned personal money management, budgeting, and financial goals through money matters. " 846 youth explored careers in youth or human services in preparation to work at the clubs as junior staff. " 205 youth collectively earned $227,050 through real-world job experience within the clubs and with outside businesses. " 426 youth work permits were issued to both club and community members. " 326 youth workers collectively earned $201,400 through summer job placements. Boys & girls clubs offers arts instruction at each of its 44 locations and partners with milwaukee arts organizations, including first stage, the milwaukee youth symphony orchestra, and the wisconsin conservatory of music. More than 10,290 members had arts experiences in 2016. Youth works mke is a three-year grant partnership between boys & girls clubs and community advocates that links teenage males at risk of criminal involvement with subsidized jobs and supportive services including mentoring, social-emotional learning, increased employment skills, and positive engagement, while preventing participation in criminal and delinquent activities. In april 2016, 33 participants at the james madison academic campus boys & girls club completed youth works mke 1. 0. G. I. R. L. S (growing inspirational & responsible leaders) programming focuses on providing leadership opportunities for girls throughout our clubs. Our two featured programs include sista pride and senoritas en accion, programs dedicated to equipping young ladies with life skills of empowerment, leadership, and character building. More than 391 girls participated in g. I. R. L. S programming in 2016, connecting with peers across the city, as well as community leaders who seek to build the next generation of strong females. Specialized training was a focus in 2016, with social-emotional learning (sel) and trauma informed care (tic) workshops enhancing staff members' ability to better serve the needs of our youth. 2016 focused on implementing sel curriculum at several sites, in coordination with existing gender or cultural programming as appropriate. Camp whitcomb/mason also incorporated sel into camp offerings, allowing the therapeutic qualities of nature to help youth gain coping skills and learn how to manage their emotions in a healthy way. Boys & girls clubs' sports programs allow youth to participate in organized leagues under the direction of professional coaches at little to no cost. Last year, 13,141 club members participated in sports, recreation, and health & wellness programming. 1,481 club members participated in organized and competitive sports leagues including baseball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and football. Surrounded by 300 acres of rolling hills, forests, and the shores of lake keesus, boys & girls clubs' camp whitcomb/mason in hartland, wisconsin provides campers with the opportunity to learn about nature and outdoor recreation while developing leadership skills, self-worth, and respect for themselves and others. Camp whitcomb/mason offers day camps and overnight camps in summer and programming year-round for members. In 2016, over 9,000 club members attended camp whitcomb/mason including resident camps, day camps, day trips, and special campouts.
