Mission: Boyd’s Station - a Kentucky nonprofit 501c(3) organization - promotes a rural and serene environment to “live free and create” through various programs to pursue individual craft without distraction in a supportive community of creators all working to create self-sustaining careers in the arts. The overall hope of Boyd’s Station is to create a “community of collaboration” among diverse artists fostering an environment for creation of real, individual works for the benefit of the artist financially and professionally while bringing the gift of art to the community of Boyd and Harrison County, Kentucky. Boyd’s Station takes advantage of a collection of properties in the small town of Boyd, Kentucky seeking to revitalize this community by creating a sustaining circle for the benefit of artists as well as the residents of one of Kentucky’s original settlement towns.
Results: PLACE+SPACE CREATIVE RESIDENCES The Boyd’s Station PLACE+SPACE CREATIVE RESIDENCE program provides ZERO-COST creative studio space and housing in the village of Boyd, Kentucky for student and professional artists and writers. Creators live in a rural and serene environment to "live free and create" for periods from one to twelve months in which to pursue their individual craft without distractions in a supportive community. 306.36 VISUAL DOCUMENTARY PROJECT One student documentary photographer is awarded the Boyd’s Station’s 306.36 VISUAL DOCUMENTARY GRANT annually providing for a twelve week intensive documentary opportunity to photograph the people and culture inside the nearly three hundred square miles surrounding Harrison County, Kentucky. Highlighted by weekly critique and commentary from twelve prize-winning visual documentary photographers in addition to other mentoring opportunities, the 306.36 Vis Doc Grant provides a unique one of a kind opportunity for emerging photojournalists to expand their skills and develop the tools to sustain a career in documentary photography. Continuing in the documentary tradition of the Farm Security Administration pictorial project’s recording of American life between 1935 and 1944, the Boyd’s Station 306.36 Vis Doc Grant project works to create an archive of the people of Harrison County.
