Causes: Biological & Life Sciences
Mission: BRIT’s mission and passion is twofold: to conserve the earth’s botanical heritage and to increase public understanding of the value that plants bring to our lives.
Results: Twenty seven years of conserving the diversity of plant life around the world and making our findings available to other research organizations, scientists, educational institutions and to the public.
Target demographics: Conservation-oriented people
Direct beneficiaries per year: For 2013, BRIT welcomed over 10,000 visitors from North Texas and around the world including 126 scientists, 2,300 preK - 12 grade students, 100 undergraduate and 37 graduate students from 13 universities.
Geographic areas served: the US and around the world
Programs: BRIT's research programs include natural prairie restoration, sustainable agricultural systems, urban landscapes and built environments, rural property plant assessments, and hotspot biodiversity assessments. In addition, our public and education outreach links global issues to local experience by educating the public about the importance of biodiversity and sustaining the environment. Programs include BRIT First Saturday, Farmers Market, Camp BRIT, and Bella's Story Time. For area schools and educators, The BRIT SEED School helps teachers connect children to nature by employing "sense of place" hands-on, real-world learning. BRIT's Teacher Tuesdays and Teacher Resource Center give added support to learning. BRIT's highly successful Green Revolution's Agents of Change program connects children to science, technology, math, and engineering (STEM) concepts and introduces the students to the fast growing environmental science career fields.
