I love the passion and pride of the work that goes on in this charity. I have helped out where I can with PR and getting high profile people to their Scrabble event and I have to say, I’ve been to many events and this one ran so smoothly, was so well done that I will model future events after it. I will do what I can to help out in the future!!!
Bill N Lisa Justice Awesome! Watching the older children read to the younger children. Seeing how excited the older children were to raise money and change other children's lives. Seeing how amazed the younger children when they got a book to call their own. This is an amazing charity that let's us all help, but empowers children. Everyone should come and see how powerful the events are.

I have watched it grow and continue to make a difference in our communities. When you can pull kids from areas that have it all to kids that have nothing and bridge the gap between the two you create leaders and readers. There is nothing that literacy doesn't touch and everyone should have the ability to read. It's a simple program that works. If we all just got engaged in this program just think how simple it could be to make sure every child could get a better chance in life to do better in school, life and whatever journey life takes them. Please take a minute and look at the amazing things BookEnds is doing.
BookEnds is a wonderful non-profit! We had the honor of participating in a book drive and delivery of the books to a school in need through my son's school. Such a simple idea and it is so well executed by BookEnds. To see a school with very few books get their classrooms filled with donated books was amazing. I believe it benefited the kids giving the books as much as the kids receiving the books. We have also participated in book sorting that is needed throughout the year. The BookEnds staff make it a lot of fun and are so thankful for the help. A great organization!!
BookEnds is an amazing non-profit that recycles gently used children’s books to reach students that need them most, AND teaches our youth the power and reward of community service! California ranks last nationally in access to libraries and 49th in books per student. Within that daunting statistic, however, BookEnds recognizes that some children have large home libraries and access to lots of books, while many other children have no books at home, and no effectively functioning school library. Lack of quality reading books significantly hinders students’ ability to learn to read and succeed in school. BookEnds’ premise is so simple: The books kids need already exist, and we just need to recycle gently used children’s books that have been outgrown and pay them forward to kids who need them. BookEnds teaches students to be effective leaders in running book drives, sorting the books according to age level and even delivering the collected books to recipient students to see the impact of helping others. In the process, they learn so much about the importance of reading, the impact they can make to improve our community, and even environmental awareness by keeping valuable books out of our landfills!
I started out with BookEnds last year by working with them as part of my Bat-Mitzvah project. In my invitation I asked people to instead of giving a gift, to make a donation to BookEnds. Inevitably I ended up raising over $5,000 for them. In the end they asked me to be part of their board and I to this day am still working with them and I absolutely love it. It really makes you feel as though you are making a difference in the world. BookEnds is an amazing organization and even though I'm only in ninth grade, I still am treated as a significant part of this organization. I am setting up and running my own events and I have to say that at all BookEnds events, there is something for all people of all ages to participate in. If you are looking for a non-profit to work I say that BookEnds is the place for you!
Imagine a world where all we need is accessible to everyone. This is exactly the pathway that BookEnds is on. The books children need exist. It takes the great, yet simple efforts of willing people to get books moved into the hands that need them the most. BookEnds = Simple Concept = Tremendous Impact
BookEnds is an outstanding organization that helps create readers and leaders. BookEnds program staff helps elementary school students organize book drives to collect gently used books and donates the books to schools and youth organizations in need of books. BookEnds staff qualifies the recipient schools to ensure that the children will have immediate access to the books and that the teachers receiving the books for their classrooms are excited to incorporate the books into their reading curriculum. The book drives are student driven, and for most of these children it is their first hands on experience with community service. Over the past 12 years, BookEnds has collected and donated almost 2.5 MILLION books to children in Los Angeles, making a tremendous impact on the literacy opportunities in our community. During a recent BookEnds delivery to a LA USD school, we were advised by a teacher that the first grade students were allowed to visit the library one time every three weeks, could check out one book, and were not allowed to take the book home. The children attending the school do not have safe access to a public library and do not have books at home. Without BookEnds, these children would not have the tools to become readers. The BookEnds model is also an excellent model for teaching children to recycle and reuse.
Bookends is such a great organization. They have helped a countless amount of people get access to books as well as teach so many kids a lesson of leadership. They do a spectacular job and really try to solve the problem of illiteracy.
BookEnds is a fantastic organization dedicated to increasing literacy and volunteerism in Southern California. It uses an amazing business model centered around kids giving to kids..c Plus, deserving schools end up with libraries full of books! It's staff and board have so much energy and dedication---its truly an amazing organization!
The heart of BookEnds, like any standout organization, is it's amazing Founder and President. BookEnds President, Robin Keefe has unflappable passion for improving our world. I have worked for many non profits, and this organization is truly beyond compare. BookEnds serves such a large base of children and communities in need and does so with incredible efficiency. It is a simple program that greatly impacts both leadership and literacy in our youth.
BookEnds succeeds in the brilliant conceptual undertaking of delivering quality children's books into the hands of kids who need them. Since their inception they have donated over $15 million in books (an official valuation). And they do so by fostering a sense of community service in the more fortunate students who help collect these books. It's a wonderful combination of community enrichment, empowerment through literacy and service, and recycling. Great program!
This organization is truly amazing! BookEnds has put over 2 million books into the hands of children who otherwise would have none! Keep up the good work!
This is what BookEnds does:
1. Show schools how to run a book drive to gather new and gently used children's books
2. Show the children who run the book drive how to sort the books according to age groups
3. Match the donor school with a recipient school
4. Co-ordinate with the schools, allowing the donor school to give the books to the recipient school, and interact with the recipients
This is what BookEnds really does:
1. Teaches children to be aware of the needs of others
2. Teaches children that they personally can help in the world
3. Provides reading materials for children in need
BookEnds provides access to books to the children that need them most. BookEnds gives children the resources to develop literacy and leadership skills and while experiencing the joy of reading. The staff is friendly and responsive and crucial to BookEnds accomplishing their mission.
Very few organizations can do so much with so little the way BookEnds does. Not only is it's staff and board filled with very talented and compassionate people, but most importantly BookEnds has an immeasurable impact on the lives of the children it serves. By recycling books sourced from book drives led by children and delivering those books to those children most in need in under served communities, BookEnds uniquely creates a better Southern California community. Kids from more affluent backgrounds are taught the value of charity and exposed to those who are less fortunate in their own city. Kids who are in need of books are provided quality books, which are delivered by children from different backgrounds. Ultimately, the imaginations and educations of both kids are driven higher through literacy and kids (donors and recipients) are taught valuable life lessons about charity and empathy. And if you're moved less by your heart and more by return, very few nonprofits can deliver as tangible and as measurable a return on their donations as BookEnds.
Gently used books all need a place to go to be read again. Bookends provides an opportunity for students to help other students through book drives and book shares. This is a positive way to keep literacy alive and keep the art of reading books part of education. Bookends hosts many events and opportunities to share books. I have hosted book drives and been at schools on the receiving end of drives. Either way is a great experience. Great organization!
BookEnds was started by a young boy who visited an LA based orphanage and discovered that there were no books available for the children at that institution. He took it upon himself to surprise his mother by collecting upwards of 800 books at school that year -- asking his mother to please bring the station wagon for pick up right before the winter holidays, Robin M. Keefe who is now the president of BookEnds initially thought that the larger car was needed because they would be pet sitting over the school break. But instead she found a happy Brandon, proud to take the first steps towards an organization which has now successfully donated over 2,000,000 books promoting literacy all over the city of LA.
