If you would like to visit a place where hope shines bright and loving kindness is shared by humans, horses and all living creatures, come to Blue Star Equiculture. The young people, staff and volunteers of this organization are caring and considerate, and the horses provide healing to everyone that connects with them. Despite a devastating personal loss and difficult time last year, the Executive Director has united a dedicated and talented Board of Directors and continues to assure that the horses receive the very best care and attention, while also providing service and activities that support the community. I am proud to support Blue Star Equiculture and these magnificent horses, and all of the other wonderful volunteers who make this place so special and magical. After reading all the other 95 reviews here, I would like to note that there are only two negative ones - really it's the same review posted twice. Having witnessed the immediate aftermath of the tragedy that occurred last year and the incredible support and love expressed by hundreds of people, including especially many young volunteers and students in their teens and 20's, I find it hard to fathom why someone would be so petty and cruel to attack Pam after what happened. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. This person has his. I have mine. And over 90 other people appear to agree with me. I will say no more.

Since Pamela is my niece, I have known her for many years, and she has had a heart full of love and concern for all animals since she was a very little girl .
Today if she always wore a favorite shawl/blanket, if need be she would take it off her back and put it on a cold horse In a minute !
I don't know another person who is as qualified as Pamela is to be responsible for the horses on her farm... She has committed her entire self and her talents to provide a safe space for the creatures she loves !

Blue Star is a shining place both in our world and in my village. I grew up in Palmer, live right down the street from the farm and have the unique opportunity to donate not only financially but by helping feed, clean stalls, care for the horses and pitch in with office work. Daily I see firsthand how not a penny is wasted in the effort to provide a home for 32 homeless and/or disabled working horses, and to find permanent homes for those able to move on. Blue Star founder Pamela Rickenbach is a force of nature with heart and smarts the size of the century-old dairy barn where you can find her working away each and every day to better the lives of horses who, without Blue Star, might have no other place to go. While too many directors of charities make only occasional visits to the actual work being done, or spend your hard-earned and well-intentioned donations on fancy dinners and a fleet of late-model sedans, Pam is living just steps away from the center of her work and world, takes no salary, owns no auto at all, puts every penny that arrives toward the care, feeding and wellbeing of the herd. And she does it with pure joy. Stop by and meet someone I consider a patron saint of these equines and for the message of what they have done for and continue to do for humans. Say hello to her equally dazzling helpers, including Zoe, Brian, Melissa, Mithra and Brandon. And, of course, get ready to fall in love with a barn full of horses and this powerful place of help and healing.

I have been following Blue Star Equiculture and Pam Rickenback Moshimer since my first visit more than 3 years ago. I also am a herd member ... My one regret is that I don't live close enough to visit often and be an active part of this wonderful draft horse rescue. The draft horses are magnificent, well cared for and friendly, the volunteers i have talked with are knowledgeable of their work and benefit to the community ... Pam is one of the most caring, compassionate and dedicated women I have ever met, she has devoted her life to the rescue, rehabilitation and placement of retired, injured and abused horses and to Mother Earth.

Blue Star does more than restore our faith in the kindness of strangers (although that alone is enough!), they restore our hope for the future. To see the kids and teens who go there to put in their time doing REAL, HONEST, HARD WORK and derive JOY from it is very refreshing. Beyond that, Blue Star provides a place for everyone in the community to reconnect with nature in a way that is unique to the relationship between humans and horses. And to top it all off, BSE is a resource for farmers and landscapers to keep their land healthy and productive naturally. I just can't say enough about how important this place is!

Blue Star Equiculture is the most amazing and inspiring horse farm I have ever visited. I came here a few years ago with my mother to see the draft horses, and make a donation. The staff- a group of delightful people- let us into the field with a bag of carrots to feed the horses. A bit intimidating at first, as we had little experience dealing with horses. About 20, 17+hh draft horses surrounded us, along with a miniature horse named "Cupcake". It was the coolest thing I have ever experienced, they were very gentle with us and calmed us down almost instantly with their energy. As they napped in the warm sun, we took pictures of them. Later on, we took a walk around the farm and bought some veggies from the farm stand. The farm was beautiful, the horses were breath-taking and the people running the farm do a great job at keeping working horses on the streets. Love, love, love this place...too bad its so far away from home!

Blue Star is unique in it's mission to rehabilitate rehome and return working animals to the work they need to thrive. Many come to Blue Star from auction kill pens, lame worn out and emaciated. They find kindness and love in the form of good veterinary care and nutritional programs formulated for their specific needs. Time and gentle handling has restored many of these gentle giants to trusting partners and teammates that go on to horse powered small farms where they are valued for their contributions to local food sources. The world needs more Blue Star ideology.

I live near Blue Star Equiculture and over the years stop in at odd hours. At any time someone can be found cleaning stalls, grooming horses, working around the farm. These are all volunteers. I have seen new horses arrive, hungry, skinny, nervous and checking back they become well fed, in good condition, contented. The horses are grouped by ages and activity levels so older horses don't have to contend with playful younger ones. And through it all walks Pam R. the director of Blue Star. As she checks the horses, they approach her, touching her as she talks quietly to each one calling them by name. Her calmness and passion for the animals and her environment comes out every time she speaks. You leave feeling humble and better about all our futures. Every one should do themselves the favor of a visit to Blue Star and feel for themselves a place of kindness and peacefulness.

I have visited this wonderful farm and sanctuary and found the horses to be very fortunate to live their lives here. The horses have room to roam or run, which is a joy to see. You can see contentment in their body language. The horses have good people taking good care of them, whether it is brushing or feeding. Or even just visiting. Most animals on this planet do not have a chance to live a decent life due to humans invading their habitats. Here at Blue Star they have the chance to live a good life denied to others. Animals need more places like Blue Star and the people who truly care for their existence.

She also has events so that the general population can visit and learn about these horses. There isn't another farm quite like hers and we must help keep it going, for the future of draft horses..

The mission at Blue Star Equiculture exceeds the goal of simply a horse "rescue." They are committed to finding jobs for their horses, in agriculture, for instance, teaching students at a local university to work with horses in farming, etc. They have horse "ambassadors" at local events, hire their horses out to weddings, funerals, parades, plowing land, maple sugaring, and so much more. The horses help support their own upkeep, though with 30 horses, of course they rely on outside donations to help with the feed and board expenses. The volunteers work tirelessly to give the horses a quality of life they deserve, which includes work that the horses enjoy. Most importantly these horses represent the great heritage of working horses that have contributed to civilization. Imagine civilization without the transportation that horses provided for centuries before cars, trains and the modern modes of transportation.

Blue Star Equiculture is by far the best draft horse rescue I have ever associated with. Pam understands that the horses are each individuals and their life and care is geared to that individuality. Blue Star has created a program that educates young and old alike about equine husbandry and the working animal. They have teamed with UMass to present a program that teaches young adults about horse power. Blue Star has an organic farm area that produces vegetables the natural way, no gasoline required. The work that Blue Star does is invaluable, the home they give retired and rescued drafts is impeccable and the people of Blue Star? Well they are priceless. There would be a huge void in the rescue world without Blue Star but more than that they help to bridge the gap between animal and machine and teach the former to anyone who is willing to learn.

The good work that they do for their animals and humans is a wonderful opportunity for all involved, often there are stories of both human and horse recovering/growing together. Further more the advocacy work that they do promoting the humane treatment of content working animals is such an asset to those of us that rely on good working relationships with draft animal power to make a living. There are still people that have a sustainable working connection with the land and animal power, Blue Star helps us tell our story and promotes more people to responsibly go down this path to a better future.

I interned here for a year. I helped teach classes, gave wagon rides, took care of horses, traveled to NYC, Long Island NY, NH, all over Mass with BSE, supported Working Horses, and became family.

BSE helped me find home after spending 3 tours in Afghanistan, and really helped shape what I want to do in life; Logging with Draft Horses. Pam and Paul showed me how to be a teamster and a better person. I was able to learn, and be an active part in all aspects of Draft Horse Husbandry.

A pace that think about daily, even though it's been months since I have there. Only reason I left was to pursue my education in Sustainable Agriculture at The Farm School so I can start my own farm, modeled after the practices of BSE.

Blue Star Equiculture is an amazing example of a holistic and fully integrated way to preserve horses in our modern lives. Tim Hayes, a Natural Horsemanship Clinician gives a powerful look at the importance of horses in our lives today, in his book "Riding Home". BSE does a wonderful job with their resources and has impacted many lives leading young people interested in horses to a lifetime with them. Horses have served man for thousands of years, please help BSE to keep them integrated in our lives. As a 4H leader for 27 years, our project saving the last horse property in our North Lake Tahoe location, offering free program to local kids mirrors the Heart of what BSE is about. Blue Star has come so far since its establishment and it continues to progress in incredible was despite the many challenges that a non profit faces. This is truly an amazing organization that is working tirelessly at some innovative work and it is one that I would very much encourage everyone to get involved in in any way that works for them.

I am a long time donor, supporter and sometime volunteer at this beautiful farm. I found Blue Star when I was googling for a local organic CSA. At first it seemed to be too good to be true so I had to visit to check it out myself. This is the real thing; horse sanctuary, farm run using organic and sustainable methods, open and honest communication...the list goes on. When you visit (and you really do need to visit) you will find warm and friendly people happy to show you around and answer questions. You have to meet the horses too - the most amazing herd of horses.

I have been involved with Blue Star since 2011. when I first approached Pam with my interest in adopting a draft horse, she and the volunteers could not have been more welcoming. the farm is well maintained, with excellent care being provided for a large herd of horses with a wide variety of special needs. Pam generously taught me to drive and I was fortunate to adopt a wonderful team of horses.
Blue Star's mission of helping horses, humans and Mother Earth is unique and invaluable. they do ceaseless work to teach the history of humans and horses and celebrate the sacred bond we share.
I am grateful for the privilege of being able to help support Blue Star Equiculture. they set an example all horse rescues should aspire to.

Living close to Palmer, MA, and a forever lover of horses and humanity, I am surprised it took me much too long to discover Blue Star Equiculture. Now, after careful research and much time spent with the horses, volunteers and having had the honor of meeting its director, Blue Star Equiculture fills a void in my life - a need to pay it forward and do whatever one person can to share positive experiences learned here. This rescue is an excellent example of making our world a better place and I am so blessed to be one with their mission.

I have been closely following the work of Blue Star Equiculture since its founding and have never been anything less than inspired by who they are and what they do. The dedication of the staff, often under highly adverse conditions, is a beacon to us all. But all the praise in the world wouldn't amount to much if there weren't verifiable success stories to show for BSE's efforts. Time after time I've seen near-miraculous transformations take place at this extraordinary facility. For those of us whose love and respect for animals is based on an open mind rather than a political agenda, BSE represents a stunning achievement.

I am an author who writes about animals, and I believe Blue Star Equiculture is one of the most important institutions anywhere. They are the future of animals in our world, I believe, they understand the importance of saving animals and also treating the people who live and work with them with love and dignity. With habitats vanishing and politics engulfing much of the animal world, Blue Star has a powerful vision for keeping domesticated animals in our everyday lives. They are so important to anyone who cares about animals or wishes to live and work with them. Work is the key to survival for many animals in the world, Blue Star grasps this better than any other organization I have encountered. They are much loved and urgently needed.

On May 31st - 2013 I wrote a lengthy "5" Star Review for Blue Star Equiculture.
It remained to this day, but after the dialogue's, the recent actions, and the steadfast denial to be completely open, I have changed my review... My opinion. Though I will save the original wording & review in a secondary Note for reference, for all to compare. For folks who may want to understand how long I stood up for this organization over years of being a volunteer to them.

Part of the review, I said this:
"One of the most important facts is this. Any and All monies raised, or received by way of donations, goes 100 percent to the care and upkeep of the horses. There are no administrative fees taken from these monies. There are no paid staff onsite. Feed, being hay, grain, supplements is the major cost of the sanctuary. I would say medical / Veterinarian care, then Farrier & Equine Dentistry becomes second in cost. ( my opinion there ).
I know of no other rescue / sanctuary that is more open or genuinely respected such as Blue Star Equiculture."

... and I find this not to be the case anymore.
In 2013, three people are registered as directors.
Pam as President / director.
Paul as Vice President / director
Dr. Purdy as a director.

The Office Expenses for 2013 are listed:

$14,050 dollars
Conferences, Conventions & Meetings listed:

$9,513 dollars
Occupancy Expense listed:

$33,864 dollars

So, the statement of are there any Administrative Fees being taken from donations has to be asked.
The payment of the lease of the farm / land is provided for by the Walsh Foundation to my understanding.

In the Statement of Program Service Accomplishments:
"Providing food, shelter, and veterinary services for homeless horses",
the expense is listed:

$164,628 dollars

With a Revenue of:

$223,968 dollars.

Leaving a balance per say of

$59,340 dollars

Not being an Accountant nor professional monetary wizard by any means, I do have some very serious questions as to how monies
( Contributions / Donations ) are actually spent.
The Pie Charts need to go.
A comprehensive "Itemized List of Expenditures", Line Item accrual of where the monies go, needs to be shared.
Statements from the PayPal account, of where the card / account was used and for what each transaction was for...
A good portion of the above budgets caught my attention.

As for the use of the brand new FORD F350 truck (named A.J.), which was obtained through the
FORD Good Works Program.
This truck was hard fought for, and donated for the use of the sanctuary, for the needs of the horses within and the effort of rescuing horses within the proximity of same. It is not, nor ever intended to be for personal use.
That being the understanding, I also question the past use now of the new truck called "AJ".

AJ went on approximately a two week Honeymoon trip to NYC, then to Philadelphia in the beginning of the year. Pam & Paul did visit with horse related friends in both cities, yet it was more of a pleasure trip than a functional trip of the sanctuary. Some of this trip was shared on FaceBook.

Then, after Paul's demise, Pam took it with three of the volunteers out west to World Peace & Prayer day.

That, the fact that AJ was driven out West, was never told upon the Blue Star page, never shared.
The trip was shared, but not once AJ's involvement.
AJ also traveled further to take these folks to other personal friends.
Pamela - Executive Director, had stated the trip was necessary for grief & healing. For time away. And I have not one problem with the "need" to go, if that be the personal desire to do such. But, to remove the work truck from the farm / sanctuary for this trip is not this trucks business.
That is unfathomable usage, it was improper and also according to the term: Inurement.
Inurement is a fancy IRS word for insiders unfairly benefiting from the assets, resources, or activities of the nonprofit they serve.

Accumulation of over 4,000 miles upon the new farm truck on this 2nd trip alone.

And also in question, is who paid for the fuel, the lodging, and all related expenses to which the four people involved incurred?

Before the trip, I know of two people who strongly disagreed with Pam's insistence of taking the truck. And I have spoken personally with both these folks. And I agree, the truck never should have been driven out west.
Be the Native Americans friends of Blue Star Equiculture, that is not nor should be the question.
Be the question of going for grief and for consoling or counseling neither a disagreement, if done by a personal means.
But the taking of AJ is nothing but done by pure raw power of the individual "In Charge", the Executive Director herself.
The sole reason for having AJ, was to replace the older FORD "Earl" and to serve the needs of the sanctuary, haul the large gooseneck trailer, get supplies and feed.
It was never meant, nor should it ever be, a limousine for personal needs.
And the question arises, who paid for the fuel, the lodging, the food and the expenses throughout the trip?

The demise of Paul, the need for Pam to cleanse herself and visit her friends I can understand...
But, as stated above, Pam was told that it needed to be done without Blue Star Equiculture's property.
And that argument caused the dismissal of Shelley Olson. And also of my final friendship and volunteerism to Blue Star Equiculture.
Read below.

Without Paul, Pam had become the sole decision maker.
An informal meeting taken place within the farm's kitchen, shortly before her western trip is also a factor in my decisions now. For it was not a Board meeting, it was a vengeful, one sided meeting with young volunteers and one Poet of elder age, raking over the coals two fine individuals who disagreed with Pam.
It was NO place for the young volunteers to be, nor take part in.

Nor was I there.... But again, I spoke personally with both of the individuals that were drawn and quartered per say, chastised in front of the volunteers, and heard all the details.

In my opinion, and with the years I spent and the thousands of hours volunteered to, I believe I have the right to offer it:
Blue Star Equiculture is in some very serious need of a Board of Directors who know the meaning and are capable of saying "No" to any future Director of Blue Star Equiculture. And that any Director has to seek approval for unusual spending or anything which may break into the grey area per say.
Chain of Command both ways... and not a One Person Show.
They must adhere to all guidelines to which 501(c)(3) non Profits are set up under.

Understand all applicable laws pertaining to this organization.

Operate without prejudice nor favoritism. Record complaints and also solutions.
I would also suggest drug screening and CORI background checks for all, to include the Boards members themselves.
A Log Book, to contain all mileage / usage of the FORD F350 Crew Cab should have and Needs to be maintained, with a description for the mileage accumulated upon it. The dates it travels and to where it goes, and for what reason(s).

As listed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts:

The Annual Reports of Blue Star Equiculture - for Public viewing can be found through the
Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts web site.
The Board is of a select few and not of a group to which the Executive Director works underneath and for...
http://corp.sec.state.ma.us/CorpWeb/CorpSearch/CorpSearchFormList.aspx?SEARCH_TYPE=1

Though Dr. Purdy has been spoken of, as a member of the Board, he is not listed on the Commonwealths filing.
And has been listed upon some Federal Tax forms though.
Though, on what IRS filings to which can be viewed, no more than three people are listed as directors in total, for this organization.
There is absolutely no justification for a three membership / directorship, where basically one person is rarely to be found upon the grounds, and the other two are actually a couple.
And by title, only one person hold all categories...
That being President, Treasure, and Clerk, as well as Director. Thus also holds the ultimate responsibility for any and all actions, that have been taken.
And no true Board of Directors oversees the operation or the dispersal of funds.
But even that being the case, records of annual meetings, minutes of such, votes taken, officers removed and newly appointed...
Where are those records?

And now since Paul is gone. There is only "One" true member of the Board...
Nothing has been done, except a promise to have new Board members seated and a new Web Site created...
... and it's now been months.

Just to be understood in my actions and thought..
It may have been Pam's dream in the beginning. But when you raise approximately one quarter of a million dollars of public donations, you have to account for not only the money... but your actions and reputation. For it is a public organization and not Pam's farm.

AND, I have not one fault with the young volunteers. They have worked their hearts out for the "Herd". That is a plain and simple fact. I offer, that the Leadership to which they are under, has much to answer for. And what is or may become, will be because of the simple fact... The rules ignored and the whims and desire of the Executive Director took over.

And there should be a process to which, Any Volunteer may seek advice or to be heard by the Board, if they think they are being unjustly accused or unfairly treated by any person... to include the Director, and receive an impartial ear. There has never been a Board, to which anyone could turn to.. that's a fact.

This is where my research has taken me.. And I am not one to cast away everything I volunteered for, nor am I watching approximately $230,000 in annual budget go unguarded. I fought intensely over the past years for "Likes" for the Blue Star FaceBook page, to which I was banished as an Administrator. And I have seen far too many good heart'd and gifted people shown the door...
And the time has come to have a full review, on everything both past - present- future. And all due to one person, one individual personality.
In my observations, the research I have done, and best opinion, that is what has happened, plain & simple.

There is much more to say and share. I have kept every piece of written conversation. I have photos of many of the happenings and events, some of which now bring even more questions of a serious nature to my mind. And a few folks may have seen the one and only time, since I was banished from Blue Star Equiculture's FaceBook page where I asked in all fairness the Question of whom were and who is now... The Board of Directors.
That post became deleted, along with a very confrontational verbal assault hurled in my direction by an extremely close friend of the Executive Director.

This was not the Blue Star that brought me to volunteer everything I could possibly do for them for numerous years. Or at least, what I was led to believe they were. But my resolve for truth and complete transparency will continue. For there are far more rescues with not even close to the funding by annual budget which deserve my respect. That is becoming more evident each day.
... and just "What boundaries have I ever crossed", as the individual commentator had stated?

Now add to the fact the following:
Blue Star Equiculture is engaged in Politics...
August 29th, 2015 BSE updates their Cover Photo upon FaceBook with the following caption:
"Who wouldn't want a Mayor that Supports Working Horses!!! We love Anythony Soto for everything he stands for and most of all his commitment to hard working horses and humans. He is a great friend to us and to our farm and every horse on it. VOTE for Anthony Soto FOR MAYOR of HOLYOKE, MA!!"
Political Campaign Intervention:
"Public charities are absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) a candidate for public office. Contributions to political campaign funds or public statements of position made on behalf of the organization in favor of or in opposition to any candidate for public office clearly violate the prohibition against political campaign activity. Violation of this prohibition may result in revocation of tax-exempt status and/or imposition of certain excise taxes. Certain activities or expenditures may not be prohibited depending on the facts and circumstances. For example, the conduct of certain voter education activities (including the presentation of public forums and the publication of voter education guides) in a non-partisan manner do not constitute prohibited political campaign activity. Other activities intended to encourage people to participate in the electoral process, such as voter registration and get-out-the-vote drives, would not constitute prohibited political campaign activity if conducted in a non-partisan manner. On the other hand, voter education or registration activities with evidence of bias that would favor one candidate over another, oppose a candidate in some manner, or have the effect of favoring a candidate or group of candidates, will constitute campaign intervention."

The boundaries that are being crossed, are being done so blatantly and without regard for governing rules.
All done by one individual, and this last campaign / election endorsement is the latest Fact to which is so apparent.

It's not the content of the campaign... It is the fact this organization of Non-Profit / Charitable Status.
"501(c)(3) organizations must avoid any issue advocacy that functions as political campaign intervention."

This is not an action of a Board, but of One Individual with all the power.

Too many good people have left. Too many rules broken.
No oversight by a Board of Directors.
Approximately $230,000 dollars all under control of a single person., to which No line item flow chart of expenses is offered.
The apparent use of the brand new FORD truck for personal use, several times.
And I am only providing for "Truth & Transparency" here. I have always been that, and will not change for anyone.

I am a volunteer and am very impressed with the running of this organization, the dedication of all involved in caring for the 32 rescue horses in their care, and all the hard work and teamwork needed to make it all happen.
As a non- profit, it takes constant fund raising to continue the great work this rescue is doing. More revenue would greatly assist this organization to do more community outreach and increase the funds needed for grain, hay, and veterinary care.

My first visit to Blue Star Equiculture was in November 2012. Blue Star was absolutely beautiful. Volunteers were doing everyday chores, horses were at the fence greeting the public. I took the farm tour, heard the story of how it all started and why. I believe in kindred spirits, so when I heard that Blue Star is committed to helping horses, humans and Mother Earth, I was hooked. I myself became a volunteer. Learning more and more every time I go. I should say, I live about an hour away. The travel is easy, I can't wait to get there each time. The horses are given the best care, but more than care, they are loved. The gardens are taken care of by horsepower, plowing etc... Blue Star welcomes the public to get involved, come visit, learn the importance of the working horse and the bond we have with them. To see how happy and proud the horses are when given a job to do. Learn how the horses are cared for, the different approaches taken in healing and diet. See the pure love each and every volunteer has for the amazing horses. Horses are our history, our present, and our future. Blue Star works hard everyday to get this message to the public.

I run a public riding stable and I am constantly facing the fact that my horses are getting older and what is the best thing to do for them as retirement. I also run into horses with special needs that need more money and care than the others and I have to wonder how am I going to do the right thing by them. We need to support great groups like Blue Star which take on these issues. Working horses are important to so many people's lives we need groups like Blue Star to help.

Pam, Paul, and all the volunteers at Blue Star Equiculture are incredibly dedicated to doing what's right for horses and for people. I have visited Blue Star on many occasions and am pleased to be able to make a small monthly donation to this organization. As the owner of a small herd of horses, I know what it takes to care for these animals, especially as they age. The folks at Blue Star give 100% towards their mission.

One of the most wonderful things about Blue Star is the atmosphere of openness at the farm. Many, many children and adults have found purpose and peace, and gained invaluable skills, because all are welcome in the Blue Star family. I wish that I lived close enough to spend time there every week.

I'm so happy that there is a Blue Star Equiculture, not only a sanctuary and rehab facility for unwanted horses, but also an educational center and organic farm! Truly a unique and critical operation for our modern world. It gives me a wonderful feeling that my modest donations go to supporting them in their work. I also love that BSE is the official retirement home for those beautiful and lovingly cared for NYC carriage horses. Their annual fundraiser, ClipClop, in Manhattan, is the ONLY event I'm willing to go to the expense to attend - flying from my home in Chicago to NYC, leaving my own horse at home for a few days and not being able to ride. This is a huge concession for me - yet, I would not want to miss attending this fun and fabulous fundraiser! - and see these wonderful people - both the BSE peeps and the NYC Carriage Horse peeps and all the other donors and supporters - not to mention those affable and majestic carriage horses : )

I first became aware of Blue Star when taken there by a friend to check it out as a possible activity for grandchildren. I met warm, friendly, welcoming people who enjoyed talking about what they were doing and who were willing to show us every corner of the farm. Over time, I visited them many times and have been consistently impressed by thoughtfulness that goes into providing, at great personal expense of time, energy and money, the most appropriate individualized care possible for every horse on the farm. I "joined the herd" and became a three star donor, and only regret that I have not yet won the lottery so as to relieve them of the burden of figuring out how to pay for the extraordinary work they do. Pam, Paul, and a small contingent of loyal volunteers do the impossible every day, enhancing and in some cases restoring the health of body and soul for the horses, people and land they care for. I am proud to have stood with them in times of sorrow, and in times of celebration.

I am a friend of Blue Star and a volunteer. I can say without reservation that the farm is remarkable, both for the horses and the people who care for them. Pam Rickenbach is a visionary with wide experience and a history of doing the right thing, whether for humans or horses. Paul Moshimer is a great heart and one of the smartest people I know. The farm is about horses and organics, and the relationship we have to the earth. People gravitate to the farm for the heart energy it generates, the creativity, and the continuing passionate dialogue about how we choose to live in difficult times. The care given the horses -- many of whom would otherwise have been sold for rendering -- is one of the most moving things I've experienced. Every ache or pain or fly bite is looked after. Many of these horses come from abusive or neglectful situations and are restored at the farm, and many of the people who love and care for the horses have had their share of existential experiences. The volunteers on the farm come from a wide demographic, from the bright and sensitive young people who live in the local communities, to retired firemen, police, corrections officers, psychologists, and medical people. I'm delighted to have discovered Blue Star Equiculture, and has given me so much. Dr. K. Douglas Anderson, Institute of Liberal Arts and Interdisciplinary Studies, Emerson College.

Blue Star Equiculture is a phenomenal organization is every way. I have known the organization for about two years when I was looking to adopt a horse from a rescue type situation. I visited quite a number of rescues and Blue Star stands out as a unique, very open and loving place for horses and the humans who volunteer there.
The folks who live there are seemingly tireless in their work and dedication to the horses, and absolutely pure of heart and spirit in their mission to help these animals.
Many of the horses are older and have health issues which would make them difficult to place in a home, so they keep them there on the farm. Care for any horse can be costly but particularly if the horse is older or needs special care, all of this is paid for through donations which constantly need to be raised. The community of volunteers that work on the farm is amazing, as anyone who visits can immediately perceive. Their hard work and dedication is awe inspiring.
They have given the horses useful jobs by creating an organic farm that feeds members of the community who in turn buy shares to support the horses and their work. Through this work they have taught many volunteers how to care for and work with the horses, developing skilled horseman in the process.
My husband and I adopted 2 semi-retired horses from Blue Star in the fall of 2011. The horses knew how to drive, we didn't, so it was a perfect match. With workshops provided through Blue Star we were able to learn the basics of driving and our experienced horses have been able to fill in our gaps. Blue Star is about 70 miles from our home, if they were closer I would be there everyday.
I would not hesitate to adopt another horse from Blue Star, and likely will as soon as we make more room at our home.

Blue Star is, by far, one of the best horse-related charities that I know of. The horses come first – always have, always will. Straightforward, transparent, thoughtful, ethical, and impactful – in short, everything you want a charity to be. I never worry that my donation is going to anything other than the care of the horses.

I love that they support working horses, I love that they use horses to farm and maintain the property, I love that they are willing to go “above and beyond” for the horses in their care. I love the work they do with young people and college students, the community, and the world at large.

They have an open door policy for everyone, supporter or not, to observe the herd and daily operations and they welcome every new person that sets foot on the farm. Pam and Paul run a tight ship and require meticulous care of and for the horses and the results are exemplary. I have known the people and horses of Blue Star Equiculture since 2011 when I moved to the area.

At first glance, I thought, 'it looks like a private professional stable' - with well nourished, groomed, and frankly - BEAUTIFUL animals onsite...and serious, dedicated workers - meticulously caring for, dressing, training and working with horses, one another and in the amazing organic garden at a border of the property.

The reality is that it is a sanctuary - the horses come as rescues or retirees...the place is completely run on donations (in other words, it is not a private professional stable...but one that is funded and cared for by the public!)...the volunteers are unpaid. The entire place is a labor of love--in dedication to the horse...not only for his use or aesthetics - but for all he has given humans throughout civilization - especially in the development, building and defense of this country.

Since my first encounter with Blue Star, I wanted to help. I quickly became a part of the volunteer staff - and have come to know many of them, including the director and general manager (Pam and Paul) very well. They are two of the most ethical, caring, responsible, dedicated, and kind people I have ever known. They spend 24 hours of every day of every year onsite - working to care for these horses...there are many others who volunteer their time and effort at this farm - and each one has his/her own special gifts to share - and they do. The horses are happy and well cared for.

The work Blue Star does in the community is invaluable...the outreach work to schools and organizations, willingness to serve anyone who comes with a need or a desire to learn, the sustainable agriculture piece (which has attracted serious leaders throughout the world and the academic communities - including UMASS Stockbridge School of Agriculture, which has just partnered with the farm to teach draft animal husbandry to students of the 5 Colleges Community) speaks volumes to the organization's dedication to the highest ethical standards of care - confirming that they completely adhere to their self declared mission to Help Horses, Humans and Mother Earth.

Blue Star is an amazing place for both humans and horses. It is a draft horse rescue and sanctuary. There are also smaller breeds that have found their way to the farm. They find perfect homes for their residents, and focus on finding the right home--not just any. They educate communities about re-establishing our connection with horses. Blue Star is also a horse-powered farm, and the horses that are able to participate in work do so, and enjoy doing it. Fresh, organic vegetables are available for sale at the farm. It is open to the public on the weekends for farm tours, and to meet the herd of 30+!
