Mission: To serve our community by meeting the needs of patients, hospitals and members for safe, high quality blood products and related services.
Programs: Blood products & services for transfusion:blood bank of delmarva (bbd) completed 60,034 blood donor collections, from which 88,721 transfusable blood products were prepared and processed for distribution to hospitals primarily in the delmarva region. 55,380 red blood cells, 7,280 platelets, and 14,920 plasma products were shipped and transfused, saving the lives of patients. In order to ensure the safety of the blood supplied, bbd performed more than 350,000 infectious disease tests on these donated blood collections.
recovered plasma for further manufacture:blood bank of delmarva (bbd) reserves excess plasma gathered during whole blood collection and pools it for biweekly shipment to a fractionator that identifies and extracts elements in the plasma to produce derivatives for medical use, such as albumin, which provide therapeutic support to patients with a variety of disease conditions. Bbd shipped 13,153 liters of this recovered plasma, of which 8,511 liters were frozen within 24 hours of collection.
community involvement:blood bank of delmarva (bbd) serves over 1. 6 million people on the delmarva peninsula and generated $434,850 of contributions for fy2017. These financial donations assist bbd with covering our operational costs which are imperative to ensuring a sufficient blood supply for our community.
