Mission: Bike Alameda was founded in 1999 by Alameda residents Lucy Gigli and Dan Wood. The group came about after the City of Alameda conducted public workshops to implement its Bicycle Master Plan. The co-founders realized that there was a thriving bicycle community in Alameda, but no real sense of community. While other cities have organized bicycling groups (clubs such as the Oakland Yellowjackets, and coalitions such as the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition), Alameda's bicyclists were (and in many ways still are) individuals who happen to bicycle, not in touch with other cyclists except for perhaps a passing "hello." Bike Alameda's goal is to change this -- to provide a community that Alameda bicyclists can belong to. The hope is that the visitors of this web site and the members of the e-mail discussion list can benefit from contact with other cyclists, and make a difference in the quality of life here in Alameda by getting involved. BikeAlameda believes in safe streets, active, healthy citizens and vibrant, walable business districts.
Programs: Our three main programs are: Advocacy meetings, workshops and campaigns to improve bicycle facilities. Work with developers and the city of Alameda to create bicycle-friendly developments. Providing free valet bike parking services for community events. The bike parking encourages event-goers to ride their bikes instead of drive to local events. It ensures that their bikes will be secure during their enjoyment of the event. 2002 is the third year. Estuary Crossing campaign mission is to find effective, economical transportation alternatives between Alameda's west end and Oakland across the estuary and help get it implemented.
