Causes: Disaster Aid, Safety Education
Mission: Bike utah is the statewide, nonprofit bicycle advocacy and education organization. Our mission is to integrate bicycling into the everday culture of the state. We aim to accomplish this mission by: - working for laws and ligislation that encourage and promote safe cycling. - educating cyclists and motorists about safe cycling, sharing the road, and obeying the law. - assisting in the development, growth, and effectiveness of local cycling advocacy groups. - developing a network of safe cycling routes throughout utah. - promoting sustainable, healthy lifestyles.
Programs: Planning initiatives wasatch bike plan - in an effort to increase the percentage of wasatch front communities with active transportation plans from 33% to 50%. Bike utah worked with the following communities to apply for active transportation plan funding: north ogden/harrisville/pleasant view joint plan; bountiful/centerville/north salt lake joint plan; west valley city; south jordan/west jordan joint plan; plain city transportation and trails master plan. If all communities receive funding, this would bring the total to 47%. Statewide bicycle master plan - held initial meetings with udot to create a statewide bicycle plan that integrates udot regional plans, county plans, and local plans. Working on procuring a consultant to begin this process. Integrate bicycling into the udot planning process - implemented active transportation committees in udot region 2 and started the process in region 1. Infrastructure initiatives us bicycle route system - worked with udot to designate north-south route from southern utah, through salt lake city, and north to idaho/wyoming. Still in process. Local advocacy - created a salt lake county action group of bike utah to work on local bicycling initiatives. This group launched numerous campaigns to improve bicycling: car free canyon day; 600 e bikeway completion; improving the marina bike route; mcclelland trail; 900 w resurfacing project; 200 w cycletrack. - helped the orem bicycle coalition facebook group to become an in-person local group. Education initiatives educational bicycle tours - coordinated, planned, and carried out 4 mobile active transportation tours to encourage planners, engineers, and elected officials to better understand how to make their communities better for bicycling and walking. Tours took place in springdale, murray/midvale, southwest davis county, and minneapolis. - planned and carried out one bike park tour for municipal officials: may 3rd draper cycle park and trailside bike park. Youth bicycle education and safety training program - educated 3,053 kids annually about bicycle riding and bicycle safety. 66% increase in student knowledge of bicycle safety. 58% of parents are reporting increased interest in bicycling and walking after their student's participation in the program. 48% of parents are reporting increased interest in bicycling and walking among other members of the household. Utah bike summit -implemented the annual utah bike summit, which educated more than 270 attendees. Driver education - developed a bicycle friendly driver training program for new uta bus operators. The program reached 200 drivers in 2017. Bicycle ambassador program - grew the salt lake county bicycle ambassador program from 11 ambassadors to 15. - developed monthly programming plan to expand bicycle education and engagement, including basic bicycling courses and learn to ride classes for adults. Public support initiatives outreach to bicycle shops and manufacturers in order to facilitate engagement in advocacy efforts - completing initial research on the feasibility of a bicycle industry trade group in utah. Active transportation benefits study - completed and promoted the utah active transportation benefits study.
