Mission: Big Country RC&D was organized and received its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 1991. On February 4, 1991,the Secretary of the US Department of the Area's request to receive continuing operating support and project grant funds. The Area is composed of twelve West Texas Counties (Borden, Fisher, Garza, Glasscock, Howard, Jones, Kent, Mitchell, Nolan, Scurry, Sterling, and Taylor). Big Country RC&D have identified nine goals which are: 1) establish job opportunities; 2)
developing/maintaining water supplies; 3) developing sewage/solid waste disposal systems; 4) developing adequate health care; 5) controlling erosion/saline problems; 6) developing rural/urban drainage systems; 7) developing wildlife/recreation potential; 8)improving low income, minority, & senior housing; 9) improving rural fire departments.
This organization is available to all the counties it serves. One service that has been provided to all counties is testing of underground water. Rural water well screening test for bacteria, salt, and nitrate concentrations in samples of well water. This test assures landowners of the safety of water for human and animal/wildlife consumption.
I live in Kent County a rural county with limited resources and we are always in need of outside help concerning environmental, research and conservation assistance. With our monies obligated to fund the services to sustain a present existance if life quality, limited funds are available to protect, perserve or expand. Our RC&D Area can provide us with assistance and research and expertise to help identify areas we can concentrate our efforts that could possible lead to jobs, community improvements to enhance the attractiveness of possibilities to entice citizens to remain or even move to our location. We can offer a good quality country life-style if we can improve our potential.
