I have worked with the Foster Grandparent Program and its Director, Kathy Richard for many years. The program is top-notch and most beneficial to our students and the community. Beneficial to the students for obvious reasons; but, to the community because it provides mature, caring adults the opportunity to give of themselves...a sense of purpose.

My school has the privilege to have several foster grandparents each year working at different grade levels to assist our teachers. The grandparents are assigned students who are below grade level in reading skills. They are guided by the teacher and work with the students in small groups using materials the teacher provides. Every year, the students who receive support from their foster grandparents either show growth are remain at their current level. It must be noted that those students who do not show growth most often have poor attendance and behavioral concerns. In such cases, the grandparents still diligently try to support those students and meet their needs to the best of their ability.
