Mission: The Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence Region's (BBBSIR) mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. Our vision is that all children achieve success in life. We do this by partnering with parents/guardians, volunteers, donors and others in the community and holding ourselves accountable for each child in our program achieving 1) high aspirations, greater confidence, and better relationships, 2) avoidance of risky behaviors, and 3) educational success.
Target demographics: children and youth facing adversity
Direct beneficiaries per year: 3650 children
Geographic areas served: 7 counties of the Greater Philadelphia area (PA: Philadelphia, Montgomery, Chester, Delaware; NJ: Camden, Burlington, Gloucester)
Programs: Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence Region (BBBS IR) provides professionally supported one-to-one mentoring using the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) evidence-based model. Children ages 7-18 facing an array of individual and environmental risk factors known to contribute to involvement in the juvenile justice system, out of home placement, academic challenges, and poor behavioral functioning are paired with a caring adult who serves as an advisor, motivator and friend. The relationship provides increased opportunities for the youth to participate in positive social activities; mentors (“Bigs”) encourage recognition and reinforcement of positive activities, behaviors and attitudes. BBBS IR is the 2nd largest Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliate agency in the country, serving approximately 3,600 children annually in the Greater Philadelphia Area (in Pennsylvania – Philadelphia, Delaware, Chester and Montgomery Counties; in New Jersey – Camden, Gloucester and Burlington Counties). Every one of the children served has their own individual adult mentor – so that our programs involve 7,200 people per year.
