Mission: The mission of the United Nations Association is first and foremost to assure the Congress and the administration that there is a constituency for the United Nations--The Charter of the UN makes its clear that the citizens, as well as the member states, must be involved. Here we do not see the UN in action, so we must educate the public, and especially young people, about the work of the UN. We celebrate special holidays, work in initiatives such as landmine removal, feature UN-related speakers on current subjects, and support UN agencies such as UNICEF, WHO, etc. There are chapters across the USA and indeed, around the world.
Programs: First of all, we encourage education--at the California State curricular level, we recently strengthen teaching requirements about the UN, and are now giving teacher workshops to strengthen the curriculum. We support the Model UN Club at Lowell High School in SF, and at several colleges and universities in the Bay area. We are celebrating International Women's Day with a film festival at San Francisco State University, and will soon do a program on children in Afghanistan with a UNICEF representative.
