Mission: Since 1985 more than 500 women of all ages and walks of life have been trained to mentor female inmates at several Nashville-area correctional facilities who have enrolled in the Better Decisions eight-week program. Incarcerated women often come from backgrounds with little opportunity to learn how to make positive decisions. Instead they tend to react impulsively, flee difficult situations by using alcohol or other drugs, and/or float along, letting others decide for them. Institutionlization further erodes self-esteem and personal responsibility. Through interactive classes and intensive one-on-one mentoring, Better Decisions provides opportunities for the student to change her self-image from "born to lose" to "born to choose."
