I started volunteering for BYA back in 1988, when I started a UC Berkeley. The place was in dire straights. I was fortunate to get a position as tutor and then a basketball coach. I went off to Law School and Graduate School, but would come back during the summers and help with grants. In 1997, I came back and helped with a project to get more girls from South and West Berkeley interested in sports as a way to teach team work and to expose them to positive role models. I have been working for BYA in various capacities ever since because of the organization's committment to children, youth, and young adults who need a little extra support along the way to becoming productive citizens.
