Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Education, Parent & Teacher Groups

Mission: The bhsdg's primary exempt purpose is to support and augment the educational programs and student services of berkeley high school, including berkeley technology academy and berkeley independent study (in discussion below, these are referred to collectively as "bhs"). These schools have a combined enrollment of approximately 3500 students. The bhsdg accomplishes its exempt purpose through two programs: making and administering grants to fund purchase and programs at bhs and administering funds, which are donations for specific learning communities, small schools, departments and programs at bhs (described in program service accomplishments below).

Programs: In the 2016-17 school year, the berkeley high school development group (bhsdg) received and processed over $482,000 in donations and other revenue. Of this total, almost $301,000 was unrestricted and to be used for the general support of the berkeley high school learning community. These unrestricted funds were used for major programs such as: -after-school tutoring program and organizers available to all students-college and career support - college fair, fund covering college applications and testing fees for low-income students, and first step scholarships for low-income college bound students-professional development - retreats, in-person training, and conferences- technology and equipment (computers, cameras, media, scientific equipment, school audio system) - classroom supplies grants ($300 each) available to all teachers-enrichment activities such as field trips, art supplies, visiting speakers and artists, student clubs, music and dance programs bhsdg received approximately $181,000 in donations and other revenue earmarked for specific learning communities, programs and departments. Bhsdg acts as fiscal agent for these funds, at no cost, providing a significant benefit to bhs schools and programs. These funds were primarily used to provide equipment, field trips, enrichment activities, and teaching support to the specific schools or departments. Bhsdg benefits from countless hours of work donated by its volunteer board and other members of the school community. Thus, it was able to keep its administrative and fundraising costs extremely low, at under $38,000 (6% of total costs. )
