Berkeley Aikikai is dedicated to preserving the fundamental nature of Aikido as envisioned by its founder Morihei Ueshiba. Japanese culture and the essence of aikido can be found in daily practice which is led by Shibata Sensei, a "Shihan" or master, who trained at Hombu dojo, in Tokyo since his early teens and came to Berkeley in 1989. Classes are also taught by Marianne Shibata, roku dan (6th dgree)black belt. Berkeley Aikikai offers classes for children as well as adults for all ages. Aikido is a unique martial art and Berkeley Aikikai is a unique dojo, with a special energy and loyal student base that connects directly with the community in its values and well grounded teachings.
