Working as an itinerant teacher of deaf children learning to listen and speak in the public schools, I saw numerous families struggle to be advocates for their children. I saw parents struggle with policy and law. The parent advocates at Beginnings were always prepared to play a big role in educating those parents and giving them the tools they need to provide the best education possible for their children. The Beginnings website is also an amazing educational resource available for families and professionals about the topic of hearing loss and all communication options.
I have worked closely with the Parent Educators from Beginnings for several years. They are always responsive in helping me meet a families needs in understanding their child's hearing loss, the importance of appropriate audiological assessment, and in helping transition a child to services once he/she leaves my program. The written and video/DVD information they provide to families is excellent in helping families understand hearing loss and communication options.
I'm an audiologist, and also a lifelong consumer of hearing instrument technology. Beginnings is an awesome organization for families of children with hearing loss. Nothing of the sort existed when I was a young child growing up with hearing loss. Parents have so many questions about hearing loss, treatment, educational options - and Beginnings non-biased approach to providing answers makes it unique. The staff are dedicated and knowledgible and have made a difference in the lives of families in North Carolina. Their webpage and parent resources are available to parents all across America, so be sure to check it out www.ncbegin.org Hearing loss is a common birth defect and we are identifying hearing loss through newborn infant hearing screening programs. But there is still much to do to help families navigate the hearing loss diagnosis...Beginnings is a great place to start and they provide services to families for children from birth to age 21.
When we found out our son was Deaf it was overwhelming news. Beginnings did an amazing job laying out all of the options that we as a hearing family had for helping our son to have language. They introduced the idea that language of any kind promotes learning language in the future, so that no matter what our long term decision was it was important to start something right away. They informed me of the options for ASL & Cued Speech & also the hearing options. Because I was well informed about all the options, my son started on ASL right away & eventually recieved cochlear implants to begin his journey in listening. Beginnings was there as a resource the whole way through, from getting me in touch with an ASL teacher to helping me more fully understand what the cochlear implant does & what the process looks like! They were amazing
Beginnings does a wonderful job of helping families understand hearing loss, communication options, and the process of transitioning to the school system at age three. We are lucky to have such a great resource as Beginnings!
I have been very fortunate to do quite a bit of volunteer work for Beginnings as well as learn about them through my own hearing loss experience and watching them interact with the families. The staff there is just amazing and so caring and concerned about these families. They definitely are there to help in a very worthwhile cause and are all very dedicated to making sure they provide great information and resources for these parents. I would definitely recommend them to every parent who has a child with hearing loss. They are genuinely there for them from birth through age 21. They are an amazing organization.
