Boys indoor volleyball is a great game that has been big positive for my son. In Southern California there will be at least 4 girls teams to 1 boys team. Many clubs are just girls, and I only know of 1 boys only team. I have a son in the Beach Cities Volleyball Club which is both a boys and girls club. This review is for the indoor Beach Cities Volleyball Club (BCVC) BOYS program. My son is starting his third season with his third coach. My son has played against and attended some camps of the other clubs in the region, and this is a quick list of BCVC strengths.
1. No other club comes anywhere near offering as much playing opportunities when including practices, camps, and clinics.
2. BCVC is by far the best value when looking a minute of court time to price.
3. Girls and boys sometimes practice at the same time, or even coed. If you are looking to create relaxed social opportunities this can be a big positive.
4. It is a non profit organization, which means you are participating in a community building organization.
In all the organized team sports I have been involved in, the atmosphere the coach brings to the team is so important. In club volleyball the season is long (Sept-June), so it can be even more important. When looking around the web sites, the coaches will list their CV's. I have found that they don't always relate to bringing joy and camaraderie to the kids practice after practice. You have to see the chemistry with your son and the coach that will coach your team at the tryouts. We have been on teams with:
Ryan Cronin
Sadiq Kagzi
Sarah Borquez
The chemistry has been very good with each of these coaches. Ryan always brought a smile to my face, because he is always smiling, we couldn't finish the season because of the covid shutdown, but is was a fun season with great moments. Sadiq is the communication king, and while we were playing up on his higher age group team, we were still part of his team with constant professional volleyball youtube suggestions. Sarah coached a full season for us, leading our team to the gold medal bracket in the SCVA West Coast Classic (which was super fun).
Christian Cammayo pretty much runs the boys side of the program, and has really increased the usability of the www.beachcitiesvbc.com website, so it is much more useful now. The one con of the Beach Cities Club Boys (I am not familiar with the girls) vs some of the others is visibility to colleges, but this summer (2021) Christian has added a new college program with many features. I am looking forward to see how this works out.
Boys volleyball is a great game that has many moments of joy in each set of each match for both sides of the court. Where ever your volleyball adventure takes you, remember the parents cheer and coaches coach.
My daughter has played for this club starting in 2016 as a 6th grader thru now (2019). We had a great experience with Coach Fuzz, who taught her the basics of volleyball - bump, set, pass. She's now on a 15's team and is still having a positive volleyball experience. We've had nothing but good experiences with the different coaches - and they treat the players very well. We've even attended some of the summer sessions, which were good. The Club cost a little more than I expected, but we have practices 2-3 time a week, play in SCVA volleyball tournaments, and even played in two travel tournaments. I'd suggest that before you sign with any Club, that you ask all of your questions: how much is it, and what do you get for this fee (practices, 1-2 coaches, uniforms, practice gyms, tournaments and leagues, etc. ) Our registration fees never included our room/board for travel tourneys, and we knew that. I'd recommend trying out! I gave them 4 stars, cause I thought it was a little expensive, but it's about what other clubs charge. I'm just frugal!
