This group epitomizes what it means to love without judgement. Their tireless efforts to help those in need is amazing. I have seen them go above and beyond on many occasions because it is truly in their hearts to so. They do whatever they can when they can simply because they love helping people. From the very beginning they have always been dedicated in their mission and have never wavered. They sacrifice much of their own lives for others and work together with other agencies to not only feed people but improve the quality of their lives. They have kept many from going hungry but have also made many people feel loved and cared for. In these times we live in this is so very important and we need more people like this group in the world.
Amazed by the amount and quality of food provided to hundreds of people weekly.
All volunteers working with donated food and funds... Wonderful group!!!
Coreen S. 09/19/2020
Great organization and group of volunteers serving hundreds of families each week with a variety of quality wholesome foods. Everyone works energetically to keep the distribution moving as efficiently and quickly for the clients. A super bunch of people providing a crucial service to the community.
Coreen S. 09/19/2020
Fun and functional group! Terrific program that makes it very easy to get fresh, healthy food for a nominal fee. Everyone working there is a volunteer. The food is donated and it comes from farms, grocery stores, and green houses. The system serves hundreds of families in record time. Fast, friendly, and fair.
Coreen S. 09/19/2020
My daughter and I are barely scraping by and that means we have to do it by sacrificing our nutrition and skipping meals. I happened upon this group on Facebook and decided to go see what it was all about. We came back with fruit! Something we are not able to buy because it is so expensive along with vegetables and other staples. There are no words other than "Thank you" to express how grateful we are to this wonderful group of people.
Coreen S. 09/19/2020
We are so glad we could help. Thank you for the kind words.
How do you thank people who are as kind and generous as the people at Be The Change / Project Hand Up? They are beyond wonderful. The food they provide helps me to feed my family and my neighbors who are having a tough time. If my granddaughter goes with me they always give her a small gift. If I take my dog he gets a treat! All the volunteers are wonderful and Coreen is a doll. They deserve all the recognition that they can get.
Coreen S. 09/19/2020
First time and last time going . Paid for Mostly expired food. Family couldn’t enjoy hardly anything. The volunteers were very rude had no people skills and treat you like cattle . Bad experience that left us w a bad taste in our mouth. Probably pocketing a lot more than the worth of the food they are handing out.
Coreen S. 09/19/2020
We are very sorry that you had a bad experience. Because the food is past it's sell by date does not mean it is bad. I do know that you received some beautiful fruits and veggies even though you did not mention that. You also came on the wrong day and lied about your last name but we let that go and gave you your groceries anyways. Again we are sorry you had a bad experience.
Project Hand Up is an incredible nonprofit to say the least. They provide RI residents with an incredible amount and variety of healthy and delicious bags of food for a nominal fee, which not only helps feed families around the state but also builds a sense of community. I have been fortunate enough to discover their nonprofit fairly recently and can only imagine the level of impact they've had over the years (didn't know they'd been around so long!) but especially in the recent months in which many more families have had to face the detrimental effects of the pandemic and have endured food insecurity. This nonprofit has worked towards bridging the gap and has provided bags and boxes of food, including items from all of the food groups. This is certainly an organization to be proud of and the volunteers should be commended for their hard work and efforts in creating a RI community in which lack of financial resources is not a limitation to accessing quality, healthy food. Awesome job!

Thank you so much for your review
Love the people at Project Hangup. They go all out to provide the community with healthy, nutritious food.
Imagine going there and receiving a full box of fresh vegetables, packages of the best fresh fruit. A bag packed with dairy products, another with staples.
Everyone there is so friendly and all doing it out of love and caring.
Project Hands Up is the best thing they help you feed your family for a very small fee. The food is always wonderful and the produce is incredible . I love going to get food there. The staff are the best they truly are working as volunteers to make sure everyone who goes get what they need. I would highly recommend them to everyone who is struggling to feed their families or them selves to go to Project Hands Up it is definitely worth it.
I never thought I would ever need to ask for help, I thought we were doing pretty well....until this pandemic happened and the world started spinning out of control. I found Be the Change/Project Hand-Up mentioned in one of my groups one day and decided to go and check it out. I could not be more overwhelmed! The volunteers are fantastic and very helpful and friendly. From the people in the parking lot directing traffic, to the people loading and filling my trunk, I could not be more in awe of them. They all volunteer to do a job and they put thier all into what they are doing. It moved swiftly and professionally and when I got home, I could not believe the things that were in those bags! I was able to give back a little bit when I brought them some bottled water for the volunteer who are working so hard in the heat, they were very appreciative. Keep up the great work, you are helping more people than you can ever imagine because with all the things given, I am even able to help some neighbors who are also struggling.
There have been so many positive things I have seen from this nonprofit. They have shown so much compassion and overwhelming positive attitudes especially now , during the covid-19 crisis. Being a single, unemployed mother money has been tight , to say the least. At times there were worries about either paying the bills or getting food. But being able to go to project hand up has been a literal life saver. They have been there making sure families have access to food and not having to worry about also paying my utilities. Every time I go, they are always friendly and non judgmental and it has made things just a little easier on the community and I can honestly say I couldn't thank them enough for all they do!
Project hand up is the best organization to volunteer for. A group of the most caring people I have ever met.
Genuinely kind and generous people and organization. Gave my 88 year old mom something to look forward to and we were always grateful to give generously to ensure they are able to continue their fine work
Great staff and the products are good. Different types of food I wouldn’t think to buy but will look for a recipe and try. Have a new way of cooking meals.
So glad I was introduced to Be The Change / Project Hand Up
This organization is a food pantry with a twist. It’s more of a food supplement program in that rather than just giving a small amount food away, there’s a small donation asked for a large quantity of food. It’s open to everyone, no restrictions. This helps all the people who don’t qualify for assistance but still have a difficult time making ends meet. When there isn’t a pandemic, you’re allowed to come in and choose your own food. This has temporarily changed, during this pandemic the volunteers back the bags, you drive up , pay your $6 donation for 3 bags of groceries that the volunteers place in your trunk and you drive off without ever leaving your vehicle. It’s a wonderful hand up with everyone’s dignity intact.
I have been a volunteer with this organization for 2+ years. We have grown to well over theee thousand families, who come to us for a little Hand Up with feeding their families.
This organization is beyond amazing. Giving a hand up to our community through a completely volunteer based staff. The work that goes on here is truly phenomenal. The effort that is taken to be able to provide such beautiful bags is short of a miracle every week.
I am proud to be a part of this amazing community. The appreciation that is felt daily by the young families, disabled, seniors and more is heartfelt. The sense of generosity is felt throughout our community as well, it is truly infectious.
I am a wife, and a mother of five children, and a foster mom of 1 child presently. We have been shopping at Be the Change/Project Hand Up since early 2017. We are a one income household and we have to make our income stretch beyond what you would think is possible. BTC/PHU has been instrumental in helping our family do that. Food is a very big expense in our home. We don’t receive food assistance and because of them being such a caring resource In our community we are able to have what we need for food and other necessities that they provide as well at such an affordable price. They sell very high quality fresh produce, meats, and grains. They also sell quality toiletries and pet food. BTC/PHU is truly a divine operation and I am so blessed to know them. They truly are being the right kind of change this world needs. They are a gift from God. Thank you for this opportunity to recognize this organization.
This program has helped my family so much, I have referred so many of my friends to shop here and they are so happy for the help. You get so many great products that you get to pick out yourself and when you go in the volunteers are so friendly and helpful. I never feel embarrassed to shop like I did when I went to the food bank or any other food assistance program. The prices are also a huge help, I am not breaking the bank to feed my family. I highly recommend visiting Be The Change even if you just want to go in and learn about the program they will defiantly show you around and explain things. I love this program so much I became a volunteer.
Throughout the years I have volunteered at several non-profits, but I have never been involved with a group as dedicated and devoted as the Project Hand Up crew! The rapid growth of this organization in order to keep up with the ever growing demand of our communities to feed themselves and their families is astonishing! Unlike government agencies, the blessings they share statewide and across our borders provides food and various resources without judgement, requirements, or restrictions. It’s a privilege to be involved with such a committed, caring, and tireless tribe led by dedicated, undeterred leaders!
Previously, before the pandemic, volunteered with this great group. Had to stop because of age and compromised immunity.
We still are able to obtain food safely, prepacked by their hard working volunteers who work everyday to sort and pack the bags of food for others. Those bags of food are amazing, packed to the brim with fruits and vegetables, breads, dairy, milk, etc. So much that we are able to share with others. They even have pop up sales with milk and fruit boxes so big.
They work so hard.
During this Covid 19 crisis we have seen our numbers of people we serve grow by amazing amounts. About triple the amount than before! We have an awesome group of volunteers that help us help so many people each day we are open. Our high for a 4 1/2 hr period was almost 400 families! So many families are able to put fresh food on their tables with help from all our supporters. Been volunteering with this organization for over 4 yrs now and it’s the most fulfilling thing I have ever done!
As a volunteer for Be The Change/Project Hand Up I am surrounded by other volunteers who work tirelessly to help others. We are able to help so many people save money on their grocery shopping so they have enough money to pay other bills. So many smiles each day we are open.....from happy customers to volunteers who are happy they were able to help them!
Great place to volunteer . Phu helps a great many people with food every week for a small donation. Many people "pay it forward" in these difficult times to help others
This is a great non-profit utilIzing donated goods from many stores and businesses to do good for everyone
Good morning unfortunately I'm broke with no money or any food.i am willing to work to earn food or cash to buy food I don't drink alcohol or smoke ciggerets or do drug's of any kind. Unfortunately I am in need of food assistance but I'm willing to work for it
What a wonderful nonprofit organization. I can help feed myself and my grandson due to the generous donations and hard work by volunteers and Coreen. I have volunteered a couple of times and loved it. Will ask to help again. Helping others is what this nonprofit does so beautifully
Amazing opportunity to shop for well needed food for my family and save big on my families food budget. My bags are always full leaving.
I am a volunteer at PHU and love it! Coreen set up a wonderful program to help the community! The customers who come in always leave with a smile and are always so thankful and appreciative!
I am a volunteer at PHU and absolutely love it! The program that Coreen has is wonderful and the many clients we have shows the need in our community. The clients we serve are always so grateful to the organization. We are always humbled by our experiences while volunteering. When you need a “hand up”, PHU is the place to go.
Friendliest people have everything you need They don't make you feel like charity even help you carry out your food
My sister and I moved to Rhode Island from Massachusetts about 1 year ago. We are self employed, and everything was going well. Then we had issues with the probate court about my Mother's estate recently after moving here. She died in 2015. We went into winter with no money in the bank. Things were getting desperate. I found this charity on a local facebook page. Coreen (the founder) has been a Godsend to my sister and I. Coreen always worked with me, if I had issues with money, and needed food. Also, we got some food for our Dog Jessie there, at very low prices. Not only am I grateful for getting food there, but the quality and selection of the food is outstanding. LOTS of fresh choices. I've always felt welcome there, and never felt bad about needing help. And no crazy red tape either! you go there, they tell you how it works, and then you can get great food.
I have had the opportunity to work closely with Coreen St.Jean, Mindy Levine Christina and most of the volunteers for several years now. Coreen and Mindy are two of the most dedicated people I know. They work six days a week at Be The Change as well as helping people behind the scenes. They go above and beyond every week to help those who walk through our doors. I can tell you first hand how much the customers appreciate what is offered every week. They often express that without this organization they wouldn't be able to make ends meet. I think the numbers say it all. We have helped over three thousand five hundred people plus and we continue to grow every week. There is a great need and thankfully this organization is here to help.
I have been with Project hand up/Be the change since the organization began, They have helped so many in our community, I enjoy seeing so many people being able to make ends meet.
I have been volunteering with Be the change for 4 years and I have seen so many people being helped. I love seeing the smiles on there faces as they sit down to a nice hot meal. This organization has so many dedicated volunteers all striving for the same goals, Helping those who need it.
This is an outstanding group of people helping those of us who need a hand up! They work tirelessly to secure provisions from multiple sources. Shelves are always stocked full of everything you can imagine and then some! Coreen and her team of volunteers go above and beyond to help all their customers both in store and carrying out bags for us to our car if needed. I'm enormously grateful for all they do to help the community!
I volunteer at Project Hands up because 1st, I believe in what they do and 2nd because of Coreen and Mindy. Everyone that comes in is treated with respect and a friendly smile.
I like being able to be part of something that helps those in need. Being able to go in and purchase necessaties at a reduced amount makes it easier to get by from week to week. You dont feel like you are getting a hand out. You're getting a helping hand.
The programs help so many local people in need who just need a little help! It is an honor to be a volunteer with them and to see all the smiles they bring to everyone who comes through the door. It is more like a family that just keeps growing!
I enjoy volunteering with such a great group of people! We all pull together and help those in need in a moments notice! And I love seeing the relief and smiles of those we serve!
This nonprofit has made an impact on many lives within the community. Since the inception of this organization many residents have been able to feed themselves and their families. So many individuals and local businesses have stepped up to help support Be the Change / Project Handup because they helped open the eyes to many as to the amount of people within our community from the homeless to the elderly that struggle to put at least one meal on their table. This organization is making a dramatic impact in the lives of so many.

I have volunteered with Be The Change for over a year and am amazed at how many people who are just getting by have been helped by this great program. Not only do they provide a hot Sunday meal for those in need, their well stocked food pantry helps many families .
Be the change has been a blessing to my family this past year! Words can't express the gratitude I have for the amazing group of people who volunteer for such a great cause! Without be the change, I wouldn't have been able to have the great Christmas we had this year! I have met some awesome people over the past year, from the volunteers to making friends while waiting in line! This is the best place to go if you are struggling between food and the financial stresses of life, hands down! When I first walked through the doors, I could never imagine how greatly they would have had an impact on my life! I look forward to seeing everyone each time I go! Not only do the volunteers of be the change have huge hearts, they welcome you with so much compassion that you never feel unwelcome! I cannot say enough good things! I always recommend be the change to all my friends and neighbors! Thank you Coreen and the many wonderful volunteers for your dedication to the community!
They helped my family when no one else would... loving and caring all the was through..
I have had the pleasure of working with Be The Change for a couple of years and it has been such an eye opening experience. Coreen and her group work tirelessly searching for the donations they need to be sure the people of the area are able to have the food, essentials and clothing they need to survive. Whenever she finds out that another wonderful business in the community has stepped up to help, the excitement is so contagious you can't help to be excited too. They are definitely an organization that must be commended for all the work they do to make the community a better place to live in.
This is a wonderful organization that helps so many members of the surrounding communities. The families come in to the meal site and are so appreciative of all that is being provided to them. Their smiles say it all. I know the people who volunteer their time and prepare the food get a wonderful feeling also. The families are also given the opportunity to purchase foods and toiletries at a fraction of the cost, giving them the feeling that they are providing for their family rather than being given a handout. This group has made such an impact on the people in the area. I am proud to be a part of what this has become.
While looking to do some volunteer work myself, I came across a local organization called “Be the Change Sunday Meal”, founded by Coreen St. Jean. When I met with Coreen she explained that every Sunday, she & her team of volunteers host a wonderful home cooked meal for the homeless & impoverished in the community serving 50+ people each week.
In addition to the Sunday Meal, Coreen told me about a new endeavor called “Project Hand-Up”, which I am honored to now be a part of. This program is designed to help the homeless, working people & the elderly stretch whatever money they may have by providing groceries, toiletries, and over the counter medication all for a small donation. This program is not a hand-out, but a “hand-up” so people don’t have to choose between eating & paying their bills. To date, there are in excess of 2,000 customers.
I think Coreen literally spends 95% of her waking hours thinking of ways to help others. She is inspiring, persistent, strong, giving, non-judgmental & kind. Those coming through the doors looking for a hand, sometimes somewhat reluctantly, leave with smiles on their faces & a sense of dignity.
100% of all money collected through donations, fundraisers, etc. is used to sustain these programs.
I have the great pleasure of volunteering at the “Be The Change – Project Hand Up” store. Coreen St. Jean, Debra Shipley Roffo and Dennis Picard do a fantastic job in coordinating the rescue of food, over-the-counter medicine and toiletries and getting it into the store, onto the shelves and into the hands of the needy. Not an easy task but they manage to rally the troops and get the job done week after week. I have enjoyed seeing the expressions on the shoppers faces go from hopeless to hopeful during their shopping experience. So many smiles and words of gratitude for helping them to feed and care for their families. Just an awesome and inspiring story of people dedicated to helping those in the community.
My husband and I donate as often as we can. It inspires you to help people in and around your community instead of writing a check and sending it off in the mail. With businesses like Whole Foods and Amazon it makes it easy to donate while you’re doing your shopping. I personally have told many people about the Be The Change Sunday Meal and the many other great things this wonderful worth while organization does for people in need. Keep up the exceptional work!
My sister-in-law and nephew have been using BTC almost since day one and it has been a blessing for them. It has allowed them to actually make it to their next check each month. The people volunteering there ar so compassionate and helpful. This is definitely needed and appreciated by many. Everyone needs to support this group as it is really supporting your neighbor. Keep up the good work as it is one program that is actually directly making a difference.
Because of the holiday I was able to purchase food. At $3. To help me make it through the month because I purchased two gifts for two small children thankful I had help thank you
I started donating to this wonderful organization after someone mentioned it to me. I feel so fortunate to be able to help others even if it’s in a small way. They are a great team of wonderful and caring people who truly care about others. I would recommend them to anyone.
From the moment you enter the door, the care begins. Everyone smiles & helps you make choices & shows you the way. You're made to feel welcome & safe. By the time you leave, it feels like you're saying goodbye to friends! Thank you for ALL you do! God bless you all!
This amazing group has saved so many food poor families with their commitment to the communities around them. No judgement, just a willingness to help. Love that they manage to provide some products for those with food allergies!
Today,I went to the food pantry for the first time. My 14 year old daughter came with me. I was nervous and felt embarrassed because I have never had to rely on anyone for food before. My experience was wonderful....I registered in a few minutes and was shopping before I could blink. We filled TWO large canvas bags with necessary vegetables, staples, and snacks and then a bag of bread and another of "specials" including meat, fresh salads, salsa, stuffing and so much more. I'm so grateful because SNAP is good, but just doesn't make the month...I am relieved that Be the Change is here for me....it'll help our family of 4 make the month!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! From the bottom of my heart!!
Coreen S. 03/27/2017
thank you we are so glad we could help
Shopping here was such a helpful and pleasant experience. The selection of food is wonderful. The part I like best is the selection of foods that are new to me because I can't afford to buy items in the market that I might not like. So I have been able to try them at a low cost. Also love that I was able to stock up on some baking goods.!! I will be a regular customer and hope to volunteer!
I think this is the best program I've seen in a long time. They're really feeding those in need with good and healthy food . I love this program
I have been involved with Be the Change for about 2 1/2 years. It is such a helpful, generous and wonderful organization. The people that started it all are the most amazing and giving that I have ever met. They give so much of themselves without taking anything in return but seeing the smiling faces of all the people that Be the Change and Project Hand Up help. The Sunday meal is homemade by volunteers. So every Sunday is like a family dinner. The store by donation is such a huge help to everyone. For the suggested donation, a person can save so much money on food and everyday items needed. That savings can go to help pay rent and bills and other necessary living expenses without to much of a struggle. These 2 programs are to help those who have nothing or just need some help getting by. Thank you Coreen, Deb, and Dennis for all that you do to help the community.
Coreen S. 03/16/2017
thank you also for all you do.
I first learned about Be the Change a few years ago. I can't believe what this group does for the community! They feed so many hungry people each week with great homemade dishes. They have fundraisers to benefit the community such as a fill the bus event that helped supply local schools with supplies and the generosity was outstanding! Free store, toiletries, sock and coat collections are always going on to help people in need. It's always about helping others. Everything that is donated to Be the Change goes to help others! Everything! Not 1 penny is taken for themselves! They pour their heart abc soul in everything they do!
Coreen S. 10/21/2016
Awesome people. An I'm saving a ton of money on everything.
The people dat run dais program is nice and make ing a different in the the community day do so much for so many people out dear not just West Warwick. The surrounding towns day don't turn no one away dear are kind and also like family
Project hands up has been a true blessing for my disabled daughter Katie, she was able to buy things for herself that she can't usually afford on her own,it made her feel independent, and worthwhile, being on a tight budget we usually buy the extra things she needs but with this program Project Hands Up she feels wonderful.
This organization is a blessing!! The people run it are truly amazing, all the time and effort they put into helping the community out is more than selfless. Taking time away from their own families to help families in need. I can not say enough good things about everyone! Thank you so much for doing this!!
I'm not just a volunteer I'm also a customer. The movement is such an amazing thing for a community that needs a positive face. Week after week I see first hand how much it all means to everyone that walks through the door. Project Hand Up and Be the Change is that helping hand that people can count on. Sending much love to all the volunteers that make this soooo successful.
The programs that are offered through this group has helped my family so much. I am thankful for everyone who is there, I have also worked side by side with them and they are awesome people.
What a welcome relief this Nonprofit is. I went one Sunday and purchased the Meal as well as 3 bags that day. I was able to get drinks; snacks - healthy ones; nuts; condiments and other items that I have to overlook at the regular store; the meal itself once defrosted and cooked has lasted longer because the chicken is so versatile and can be used in so many ways after cooking. Thank you. Look forward to visiting this place soon. The volunteers were so helpful and all had huge smiles for us.
This group provides so much help to the community. Awesome!!!
I am so happy that they do this for people who need help they friendly helpful all way it amazing they do this open there heart ❤️ All volunteering they amazing I am very impresse this great opportunity they doing this for people and helping homeless
This place has been a life saver. Not only have I been able to save myself money and put it aside for bills and emergencies, but the staff is amazing. Everyone is helpful and friendly, I'm just very thankful to have found this organization.
This organization is the most loving non judgmental group of people helping others. The volunteers are amazing! The items from cereal to coffee ,condiments to complete meal items are amazing. Cookies and dessert I would never had been able to purchase. Medicines and toiletries are available for a reasonable donation as well. I want to thank them for all they are doing for the community and on a personal level for my family and friends.
As a family we tend to not get extras for shoping this includes cereal, chips ,condements and even drinks and this allowed me to get the kids some treats and still make ends meet.very kind and amazing people
