Results: Hundreds of children's lives have been saved through Band of Parents-funded treatments. The antibody Hu3f8, and vaccine treatments we funded are not front line treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
Target demographics: Children with the life-threatening cancer neuroblastoma, Band of Parents funds cutting-edge clinical trials
Direct beneficiaries per year: Dozens of children and their families engaged in immunotherapy and vaccine clinical trials at major cancer centers such as Memorial Sloan Kettering, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, and others.
Geographic areas served: Based in New York, but with members throughout the US and overseas
Programs: Band of Parents is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization founded by the parents of children diagnosed with the pediatric cancer neuroblastoma, and the top funder of neuroblastoma research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). Only 30 years ago, a diagnosis of neuroblastoma meant certain death. While today, most major medical centers like MSKCC have over a 50% survival rate, far too many children are still dying of this disease. The sad fact is that, due to the high cost of research, pediatric cancer is severely underfunded by both the pharmaceutical industry and the federal government. Our goal is to further the research and drug development desperately needed to save more children, with less toxic treatments. Since our founding in 2007, we have pledged more than $6 million to neuroblastoma research. Several treatments funded by Band of Parents are now standard protocols at MSKCC and other major cancer centers.
