Baja Animal Sanctuary is the greatest thing that ever happened to animals in Mexico, a notoriously difficult place in which to rescue animals. Baja takes in the hardest cases, as well as animals from desperate other rescuers all throughout Mexico, and gets them healthy and adoptable and placed in loving forever homes. If they are not able to be placed in a home, they get to live a happy, healthy, loved life at the sanctuary. My Tails of Joy rescue is happy to support them in the great work they do. They deserve ten stars.
I’m so grateful for BAS I’ve adopted 2 wonderful pups from them
Their staff/volunteers are so dedicated and truly care about all of the animals
BAS is an extraordinary place that rescue and takes care of hundreds of dogs in need. We got our precious girls 6 and 7 years ago, they are the perfect match to our family, they love treats, snuggles, visit Abuela and road trips, we recently visited Vancouver and they were the perfect companions . I always recommend BAS if you are looking your forever baby. Thank you BAS ❤️

We got Pixie Lou in 2016 and Charlene in 2017. Best decision ever, BAS is the best place to look for your forever baby. They gave me 2 weeks to foster and then you have the option to return them, but falling in love with them since day one, BAS is very supportive even now years later I still have contact with the Sanctuary, and I always try to help when they need it, because I will be forever grateful to them for giving me my girls. BAS thank you for everything you do !
Baja Animal Sanctuary have a great staff and they took care of the pets and make sure they’re in a good place. I adopted my dog name Bud from Baja and we loved him so much.
BAS has saved so many dogs and cats from short, perilous lives and takes care of them well! I was looking for a dog in San Diego County ten years ago, but the shelters only had Pits and Chihuahuas at the time and being a renter I didn't want home rejection due to banned breeds. BAS had this 5-month old Chihuahua-Terrier mix that was just perfect. They took good care of him until he was totally healthy, vaccinated, and neutered. We picked him up at Petco in Poway and he has been a fabulous buddy without any health issues that accompany pure breeds. He is small enough that he travels with me and he has been to several states and Europe! We car camp all of the time and he is just my best friend and a joy. Thank you BAS!
It's actually been quite a while since we got our doggie Guinness (the big guy) from them. Over the years it's nice to see they are still helping connect the fur babies to loving mommies and daddies. I look forward to their posts for the pups up for adoption. Part of what amazes me the most is the longevity of some of the volunteers. I am training to be a drug & alcohol counselor and our recovery center utilizes volunteers to a large degree. The life span is about 6 months. But some of the folks at the Baja facility have been there literally decades. Great work out there.
I have been blessed with getting to adopt 2 dogs separate times from Baja Animal Sanctuary this amazing rescue!!! Most recently I was able to adopt Charley (aka Cass) She was abandoned outside of the rescue pregnant and unhealthy. They SAVED her!!! Helped her have her babies unfortunately only one out of the four survived. This dog was meant for me. She has brought so much joy to my family and my other dog Bella. I will mention them to anyone I hear thinking about getting a new fur family member
Baja Animal Sanctuary is and continues to be one of the greatest rescue organizations on the planet. Year after year they take the dogs that may never get adopted, along with dogs that do get to find their forever homes through this amazing Sanctuary. From all over Mexico and the US, their doors and hearts are open to saving the lives of needy dogs and cats. They welcome all, knowing some will find homes and some will stay under their loving and excellent care forever. I don't know what animals, and the rescue community, would do without them. Your donations could not be used more productively and judiciously than donating to Baja Animal Sanctuary.

Baja Animal Sanctuary has been such a lighthouse organization for the Rosarito community. Sunny founded it decades ago and Jamie has continued the mission with saving homeless animals, education programs, and spay/neuter. He has helped me personally get 1 pregnant mama off the street (where she subsequently had 4 healthy puppies) and 2-3 other pups in need. Great organization operated with the highest degree of transparency and dedication to animal welfare.
We adopted both our dogs from Baja Animal Sanctuary. The care and devotion they have towards animals in Mexico and transporting them to the US is beyond words. They really are wonderful humans with a big heart. The next dog we get will definitely be from
BAS, they are the best!
We got our rescue dog Lucy from here - great experience- no hassles - I would highly recommend- in fact when we were picking up our dog another family was there picking up a pup who had driven down from San Jose.
We adopted our Rosie from Baja Animal Sanctuary. They provided all of her records and support services after the adoption. They are an excellent organization.
In 2018, Baja Animal Sanctuary held a major adoption event at Grossmont Center with over 250 rescue dogs. As we were about to leave, we passed by a Terrier mix who gently jumped up and wrapped her paws around our arms, as if she didn’t want to let go. We gave her some attention, and she was incredibly sweet. Unfortunately, we left without her, but once we got home, something urged us to go back and adopt her. When we returned, she was still there, and although others were spending time with her, no paperwork had been completed. I inquired if she was still available, and she was. Adopting her was the best decision we ever made. Previously named Hilda, Sadie is the most outgoing, sweet, loving, and grounded dog you could ever meet. Sometimes, I even forget she’s a dog.
My neighbor adopted a sweet pup from this organization. They are great with follow up and helpful information on training. Murphy is my favorite neighbor dog, thank you Baja for the great work you do!
Baja Animal Sanctuary has been a tremendous resource for homeless cats and dogs in Mexico. There is little help for these animals, they are left to wander in the streets. BAS takes them in, cleans them up, nurses them back to health, keeps them safe, and then finds them forever homes. It’s a lot of work and the volunteers do it because they really care. I sleep better at night knowing BAS is there to save these animals.

There is such a tremendous need for rescue and rehoming of stray homeless dogs in Mexico! The people there either don’t care or can’t afford to spay and neuter. Baja Animal Sanctuary has spent countless hours, days, weeks, years, and dollars taking in these poor pups and giving them a chance at a real life. Because of selfless people like those who run and volunteer at BAS, I can sleep at night. God bless them all!
Hello everyone. This is definitely a sanctuary where the members have left their souls to keep the dogs healthy, safe, happy and amazingly living free within the sanctuary itself, keeping them safe, while they can find homes, and if they don't find that is a home. Thank you BAS for all you do for thousands of dogs.
I adopted our dog from Baja sanctuary 15 years ago. She was a beautiful beagle mix named Letti. What baja sanctuary has done with these animals is amazing and I'm forever grateful that you provided her a second opportunity at living a long and beautiful life. We had Letti for 15 of her 18 years and she was perfect. Thank you.
I adopted my little boy in 2019. Every step in the process was easy and everyone is so loving. These are some of the best people. These dogs are so lucky to have somewhere to be loved by wonderful people.
I’m forever grateful to Baja animal for my little Kona! From the very first interaction I could tell that they all care deeply for all the animals! The whole adoption process was fair and easy. Im very proud to now be part of the BAS family

2 years ago my husband and I were ready to add to our family. We came across the most beautiful perfect angel at Baja animal sanctuary, and we met her and fell in love. It’s been 2 years and they still check in to make sure I know they are available for anything! I would recommend them to the world, they take such good care of the animals and love them so much! Thank you for everything you do! I’m forever grateful
Very well organized and compassionate organization. The staff and volunteers I worked with when adopting my dogs were very kind and knowledgeable. Great organization!

Our sweet Jasper, goofy Lucy, and love bug Zippy were all adopted from Baja Animal Sanctuary. We had such a great experience with BAS after our first adoption, I began volunteering at adoption events as I was so inspired by their passion, dedication and endless love for animals. BAS is an amazing organization.
This wonderful charity has a massive place in my heart. About two years ago after picking my son up from his art class we popped into see the doggies for adoption from Baja Animal Sanctuary. We quickly fell in love with not only the dogs, volunteers but the history and amazing work they do for these precious animals. After much persistence by myself and our kids we convinced my hubby to get a second dog. We are even more in love with the sanctuary and our precious pooch we adopted.
I love BAS! I have 3 dogs from them. My dogs are sweet and healthy. The process to adopt is fairly easy and the support from BAS is wonderful.
We have been so happy with adopting from the Baja Animal Sanctuary. Since finding out about this wonderful organization we have adopted three great dogs over the years.
B.A.S. dogs enjoying a day out with their forever families.

I am so amazed at how well run Baja Animal Sanctuary is. In 2019 we fostered, now called Maggie for two weeks, by day 4 we became foster failures. She has been the best walking partner I've ever had. If I don't feel like walking she comes over to me nudging me as to say "let's go". In the end I'm so happy she does. I can't say enough good things about the organization.
We adopted our first Baja Animal Sanctuary dog, Daniella, in 1998. Since then, we have adopted NINE BAS dogs! There is something special about BAS dogs - while all rescued dogs seem to appreciate their new lives, BAS dogs seem to possess an extra layer of heart and soul. BAS takes dogs, often who are in horrific shape, physically and often emotionally, and transforms them into happy, healthy, amazing animals! Our last and current BAS dog, Luigi, was tethered in Mexico, attacked by wild dogs who tore off half his face, BAS saved him, had surgery to repair his wounds, and we welcomed him into our home in 2019. Luigi, like all our previous BAS dogs, is a love! BAS does amazing work in an environment that often times is challenging to say the least. Every single dog is special to them and every dog they save will be given what they need, then be adopted into an appropriate home, or if need be, spend their lives in the safety and care of the sanctuary. Both my husband and I are on the Board of BAS, that's how much we believe in what they do - they save and transform lives that sadly, would often be left to fend for themselves or die. BAS makes miracles happen!

We adopted our first Baja Animal Sanctuary (BAS) dog, Daniella, in the mid-90s. Daniella had been run over by a car in Mexico and left to die until BAS found her, cared for her, amputated her crushed leg, and put her up for adoption. Little did we know that Daniella would be the first of NINE BAS dogs we went on to adopt! After 25+ years, we now have Luigi (who was tied up in Mexico, half his face taken off by a pack of dogs) and Hope (run over by a car, leg amputated) to remind us how magical BAS dogs are. They seem to appreciate more, love more, and truly treasure each day they have. My husband and are donors and volunteers and refer anyone looking for a wonderful dog or cat to Baja Animal Sanctuary. BAS does amazing work and no matter how difficult the economy, or even the weather in Mexico, the dogs'' and cats' care and well-being come first. They do their very best, 24/7, to educate, spay/neuter, and adopt precious lives - they are wonderful!
I have 3 dogs from BAS that have become my whole world. 15 year old Shepard mix, 13 year old terrier mix and 3 year old sharpei lab mix. Each one the sweetest ever pups. Adoption process is easy but also thorough. Love this organization

Wonderful organization. I have 3 amazing dogs from them. They also do a wonderful spay/neuter clinic in their community
Today is my dogs sixth birthday. I wish that she was still a puppy because the memories are so happy when she arrived in the van from Mexico along with other dogs that were being adopted. My daughter and I got there an hour and a half early to be sure to be the first to hold her. BAS keeps dogs for life unless they get adopted. Their doors are always open and loving care is every day. Dogs are not kept in cages, so they are very socialized every day. Lots of hard work, sweat and loves goes into each day at BAS.

I can not save enough positive admiring things about this rescue group! Dogs stay for life is not places in a living forever home. No cages but freedom to roam. Spay neuter clinics for all people and the cost is low or covered by donations. Great dogs and people who share the passion of deep love for each animal they come across BAS 4ever. ♥️♥️♥️♥️
We adopted “Margo” now Luci about seven years ago and she’s been the best dog we’ve ever had. The volunteers at Baja animal sanctuary are very nice and clearly have the dogs best interests at heart. The questions they ask before adoption and the home visit follow up really show they care. Luci has a great temperament and does well with both people and animals. We’re thankful for BAS and their volunteers!
Our family is so happy with our little rescue pup Ellie. We had such a great experience with her adoption that word spread and friends who have been looking for a new family member have also gone to Baja Animal Sanctuary and adopted! This rescue treats their animals so well and does such a great job finding good homes for them. The volunteers are kind and helpful, and at any of the adoption events you may even get to meet the director – not that he’ll let you know, because he’s there for the animals and the care and love he has for this work shows in his diligence. We look forward to making more contributions to this wonderful organization!
Best rescue I’ve ever had the pleasure to associate with. Everyone genuinely cares about the animals. From the sanctuary to the employees to volunteers, top notch. Highly recommend this rescue to anyone and everyone
I adopted my first BAS dog 14 years ago. I'd just lost 1 of my dogs and his brother fell into a deep depression. They were a bonded pair and he was not good with other dogs, but when he met Molly it was love at first sight. Fast forward I just adopted my 6th BAS dog and began volunteering. I'm passionate about dogs and equally so about BAS. I've visited numerous times and have seen first hand the dedication the staff has for the work they do. For 25 years BAS has rescued thousands of strays, and for the ones who aren't adoptable they have a safe place to live out their lives - not in isolation but in large corrals and in social groups. Despite the overwhelming responsibility to feed and care for hundreds of dogs and cats, they never say no or turn away an animal in need.
I will forever be grateful for the dogs that I've been entrusted to love and care for, and look forward to welcoming many more in the coming year.

i adopted my first BAS dog in 2008. I had recently lost one of my dogs and his brother, Buster, was very lonely. Although the dog I had applied for was already spoken for, after describing my situation I was given a recommendation for an available dog. I took Buster to meet her and it was love at first site! Her name was Nadia, which I changed to Molly. She was extremely timid but instantly bonded with Buster and quickly came out of her shell. She's honestly the sweetest, affectionate dog I've ever had. Shortly before I was time to say goodbye to Buster I went back to BAS to find a companion for Molly, knowing she would have a difficult time with his loss. Her name was Anita!!! So of course i renamed her to Bella. She was and is still a timid girl but when she warms up to you she'll be your best friend. And finally 2 years ago I adopted my 3rd BAS dog. Bertha, now named Daisy, was a senior who instantly stole my heart. She's quiet, so well behaved despite what was probably an sad and rough life prior to being rescued, and incredibly loving and affectionate.
Shortly after adopting my 2nd dog I began volunteering because I truly appreciate the work BAS does and the effort that's made to find the right home for their animals - not just putting any dog in any home. Over the last several years I've been volunteering more, helping with adoptions and following up with adopters. It's some of the most rewarding work I've ever done. And while I've always been an animal advocate the experience has helped me see the hard, tireless work from the rescuers perspective.
Judy cares more for the animals than anyone I know! They go to great lengths to make sure the pets are going to good homes. Highly recommend.
I first heard about Baja Animal Sanctuary when I met a very loving, playful dog and its owner during random walk. The owner highly recommended BAS as placing dogs who have very good temperaments in need of loving homes, and that is one of many stories. We adopted our German Shorthair Pointer mix Cora at six-months old in 2020. It was love at first site for our shy, sweet Cora. I love that BAS matches each dog with an owner whose lifestyle and needs are a fit. We wanted a running partner and active dog which is a exactly what we found. Jamie takes excellent care of the dogs in Baja and needs all the help he can get to rescue animals. Anita did the meet and greet at Kahoots, paperwork and visit in-home to make sure Cora went to its rightful, caring owner. She answered all questions and still is in touch with us today. We couldn’t have wished for a more loving family member and forever home! BAS is a trustworthy organization that deeply cares about animals who need a good home. Please support them and give these animals a good forever home and they will reward you with more love than you ever imagined.
Baja Animal Sanctuary is an amazing organization. I volunteered with them for six years, and saw so much love go into the rescue work they do. This organization is run by such hardworking people with pure intentions. So many beautiful dogs and cats have been saved from the streets thanks to the work of Baja! And I feel so fortunate to have been able to witness the amazing work they do. I will always value my time spent volunteering with the kitties of Baja Animal Sanctuary!
In 2017 we had gone through the pet adoptions page when we heard about Baja Animal Sanctuary. We found a picture of a baby girl we needed to meet. I got ahold of BAS & had so many questions & the lady I talked to was amazing..Filling out the paperwork was easy & then it was time to go meet our baby girl & hope she wanted to come home with us. Well it was love at first site & she was a keeper, Natasha was coming to her forever home. We had picked out her name & were calling her TEZZA. But after she was comfortable with her 2 new dog sisters & 3 new kitty sisters we started calling her
Lil’ Stinker & that name still holds true today. LOL
I love the way BAS keeps in touch with their clients & lets us do updates.
The work they do is amazing & for them to bring the dogs & cats across the border is such a bonus for those of us that don’t like to go across the border.
I will definitely look into you BAS next time we are ready to adopt another fur baby . You are an amazing sanctuary! Thank you

I love the Baja Animal Sanctuary. They have saved so many abandoned animals even when they were full to capacity they made a way to save that one more. I have adopted several of their kitties and they all are so loved and cared for.

Baja Animal Sanctuary has the BEST dogs and cats. They take time with these precious ones to ensure they will complete any home. I have adopted my sweet kitties from them and was so impressed I wanted to volunteer and have been now for 13 years.
Baja Animal Sanctuary or “BAS” first and foremost, they do tremendous work for the community by rescuing strays and many animals in need. Practically everyone I’ve met in San Diego has shared that their dog was found somewhere in Baja California, and also that they couldn’t be happier. The stigma with having a dog from across the border is “will they be sick?” “Will their behavior be unpredictable?” And these couldn’t be further from the truth. Baja Animal Sanctuary provides spay/neuter, shots, blood work, and most importantly, a humane place to stay until these pups find their forever home. I couldn’t be happier with the adoption process, the post-adoption check-ins, and the overall health of my dog Nova! She is a ball of joy and love, and is the missing piece to my puzzle. I’m forever thankful and devout to this rescue for bringing us together. I will adopt from them until my time on earth is complete ❤️
The entire team from application process to fostering process to the final adoption process was amazing. I can really tell they love and care for their animals.
My pup in particular I was warned of her scared and nervous behavior but without then our family wouldn’t have our missing piece.
Baja Animal Sanctuary is truly life altering and life saving. The efforts they make to assure that every animal and family is a perfect and life long match is something special The volunteers are caring and knowledgeable and go above and beyond to keep this amazing place a 5 star rescue.

Seven years ago we fostered a dog for one week for BAS. After two days I was calling the supervisor of the program to ask if we could adopt instead. Of course, she said "yes". We changed her name from Rachel to Bessie and she has been a fantastic addition to our family. At first, Bessie was very shy and was clearly afraid of men. Slowly, she discovered that all men weren't bad and began to trust the ones she knew. She has been a loving sister to our golden who is one year older. When we adopted her, she had been spayed and had all the shots she needed. We took her to our vet and got a very clean bill of health. BAS is located in Mexico and has a large facility. Not only do they take any dog they find or that is relinquished, but they also provide free spay and neutering for the residents of the area that would not be able to afford it. The staff seem to love these dogs and I have seen pictures of them loving on all the adorable dogs and cats. I highly recommend this organization if you are interested in an adorable and loving pet.

Baja Animal Sanctuary is all about the animals! Not only those that they put up for adoption, but all the animals in the surrounding area. They not only spay and neuter all of the rescued animals placed for adoption, but also provide free clinics for the people in the area that cannot afford to have it done for their pets.
We have adopted a dog from Baja and it was one of the best choices we made. We have had our dog, Bessie, for 8 years and she is the love of our life. She was shy when we first adopted her, but is very loving and trusting with us now. She has been very healthy from day one.
Baja, doesn't just adopt out dogs. They have a screening process that finds the best home for each dog. They provide a 2 week foster program that allows the families to be sure the pet is the best fit for them. During that two weeks, a volunteer comes to the home to be sure that the home is a great fit for the pet as well. All of the volunteers are very caring and make sure the family gets the animal that is best for them.
I highly recommend Baja Animal Sanctuary as exemplary rescue and adoption service as well as a community leader.
A wonderful charity, with caring people, that has great success in caring for and placing stray dogs.
Kathleen was so helpful and informative when we adopted our cat from Baja Animal Sanctuary. We were amazed by the catio and all the attention that the foster cats receive. This non-profit does home visits to assure their cats are going to a good home. We are so happy with our adoption and impressed with this organization.
The Baja Animal Sanctuary is a wonderful place operated by Kathleen, who is devoted to finding forever homes for cats. She is truly dedicated to helping her kitties find a loving and safe home. She gives every one of her cats her full attention to assure their health and happiness and in turn her kitties are absolute loves. We have two of her adoptions, Arabella (we’ve had 7 years) and Bali (6 weeks). They get along great and we’re currently in Maine on a 4 month RV trip with them. They are our camping Kitties and travel companions.
Over the years I have adopted 3 dogs from the Baja Animal Sanctuary and they have each been wonderful members of our household. The organization is incredible- doing so much with so little. Baja Animal Sanctuary is truly dedicated not only to finding forever homes for the animals they have rescued, but also in educating on the importance of spay and neuter and on caring and compassion for the helpless.
I recently recommended the Baja Animal Sanctuary to a neighbor who was looking to adopt a dog and she has told me over and over what a great dog she got! Plus, I love having another Baja Animal Sanctuary dog on my block!
We adopted two dogs from Baja Animal Sanctuary. This organization really cares about the dogs they place. They careful vet each potential family before releasing a dog into their care. I was so impressed with the work they were doing that after adopting my dogs I spent several years volunteering for this organization. I was so impressed with all the volunteers I worked with. Everyone really came together to serve the best interest of the dogs. So much love and care were evident in every event I worked. Thanks for all you do.
Baja Animal Sanctuary is amazing! My family has adopted 5 dogs from them over a span of 15 years. They're a caring, warm hearted organization with dedicated volunteers!
Our fur baby came home seven years ago. She was emaciated, had had a litter of puppies that was nowhere to be found, and was recovering from a broken pelvis. She weighed 32 pounds and had a parasite. Baja Animal Sanctuary picked her up, gave her the proper medication, and matched her with our family. Today, she is a healthy 48 pounds covered in luxurious fur. We can’t imagine life without her and we are so grateful that Baja Animal Sanctuary rescued her!
I have been a volunteer with BAS for 18 years and I challenge you to find a better rescue group. Our dogs are kept in huge corrals so they are social. The have age appropriate vaccines, are sterilized, de-wormed and flea/tick treated. Applicants are vetted thoroughly before they are allowed to adopt. There is a 2 week foster period to ensure that the dog and the family are a good match. If all goes well we do a home visit and finalize the adoption.

I have been involved with BAS for 18 years. As Program Director I know how much care goes into the well-being of the animals in our facility. The adoption process is simple but strict. After an application is approved the family meets the dog/cat and is then interviewed by one of our seasoned volunteers. If all goes well, they get to take the dog/cat home. There is a 2 week foster period to assure that the pet is a good match. A home visit is done and if it's a good match the adoption is finalized. If it's not a good match, we take the dog/cat back and the adoption fee is refunded.
We'd been thinking about adopting for quite a while and finally connected with BAS. Once we did, it happened very quickly! They made the entire process so easy. We felt supported from beginning to "end". During the foster period, we had a wonderful relationship with Anita who supported us and answered all our questions.
Daisy is a lovely animal who enjoys going everywhere with us and knows how to relax after long hikes or days at the beach! She has made herself at home and part of the family.
If we were to do it again, it would definitely be with Baja Animal Sanctuary.
Baja Animal Sanctuary was so easy to work with in adopting my new dog, Mallory!! They made the adoption process very simple. The staff are very pleasant & answered any questions I had promptly. They do such great work in helping pets in need & finding them a forever homes! Hats off to BAS!!!
BAS is a wonderful organization that works tirelessly to rescue, rehab and socialize their cats and dogs to prepare them to be adopted into forever homes. We will always be grateful for our little Rosalie! ❤️
We have adopted two dogs from them. They are so caring for all their animals. We had our Bailey for 14 years and our senior Nubie for a few years. Judy Sobel and Anita are great.
Baja Animal Sanctuary working 24/7 To save dogs and cats , rehabilitate them, provide medical services, spay and neuter for the community and others Not to mention finding the right placement for all animals that go to new homes.. I can’t say enough about this group. They go way beyond the fences and walls of the sanctuary to provide help for all.
Over the last12 years I have adopted 6 dogs from Baja Animal Sanctuary in Mexico. They have and are the BEST DOGS I have ever had and all came in very good health and well behaved. The wonderful work done to promote and place these precious animals is outstanding. Also adopted 4 cats.
I have adopted 2 dogs from BAS. One dog, Sugar, became my hearing dog out of her natural intelligence and devotion.
My other dog, Billy, is a self-taught emotional support dog. He has been a comfort to 2 people during hospice. And a third person in need of care. They are the best dogs ever and the best sanctuary also.

I have been adopting dogs from this group for...20 years? I know my kids only know BAS dogs and I know their ages. They are the most appreciative animals and give you back ten fold. I appreciate the love given to these animals and the effort the staff puts forth in dealing with me and my family on getting each new family member!
I recently adopted my 4th BAS dog (first one passed away). This is the only organization I will ever use for dog adoptions. The dogs are very well cared for and thoroughly checked out before being considered for adoption. They almost always are well socialized with other dogs (and often cats). The 2 week foster to adopt period is the best; there is always follow up and help with any issues and it is not limited to just the foster period. I feel comfortable in contacting the organization for help anytime and find them to be well informed with good suggestions. They truly care that the perfect home is found for every dog.

I have adopted 3 dogs from BAS and have been a volunteer for over a year. This organization only cares that the dog is in the appropriate home and provides that opportunity with the 2 week foster period before the final adoption. The dogs are very well socialized and have had all their vaccinations. The adoption applications are carefully screened and follow ups are done very shortly after the dog is placed. The volunteers are very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable and deeply care for all of the dogs. I would never adopt from another organization.
Sydney was found as a stray in Mexico when he was 4 and went to live at Baja Animal Sanctuary. In 2019 his stellar smile online stole my heart and, at 9 years young, he came and started a new life with myself and his three new canine siblings. It is hard to imagine my life without my studly scruffy senior and I am forever in debt to BAS for bringing him into my life. Every day is a new adventure, and the sky is the limit for this rescue rock star!
I live in Rosarito, Baja MX and learned about Baja Animal Sanctuary when a couple of puppies were wandering loose on my street and I wanted to help get them adopted.
BAS came to the rescue and both of the puppies have been placed in good homes.
I've attached 2 photos of one of the pups. One photo from when I found him and another from when he was adopted.
I currently volunteer and find much joy in being able to help.
The missing link to our family was waiting for us at Baja Animal Sanctuary, and thanks to BAS and Judy he is home!!! We worked closely with Judy to adopt our sweet boy, Boris. The program is exceptional; they pay close attention to detail and have fantastic skills in matching animals to their families. We love our pup so much and are so thankful for this wonderful organization!
Caring, kind, responsive, positive and so very helpful to animals in need.

So many amazing animals are safe in homes because of BAS. They’re the best! Our two BAS pups agree :)
Baja Animal Sanctuary does amazing work!! I can’t say enough good about all the volunteers that go way beyond to save animals !
I have been a volunteer for 11 years and have finally adopted one for myself! My beloved pup, Darcy, passed away during Covid and was a one dog family type. Everyone from the folks who bring in rescues to those who place them to those who foster and finally to those who adopt are amazing, generous people who have an additional gene in their makeup. I’m so fortunate to be part of this rescue organization.
Simply the best! Both of our rescues are from Baja Animal Sanctuary & we couldn't imagine our lives without them. The non-profit really cares about the wellbeing of the animals and make sure they end up in a really good home. I also had the opportunity of visiting the sanctuary in 2020 & 2021, it really is heaven on earth for street dogs & cats. There is no other non-profit in Rosarito doing what BAS is doing.
I have adopted 2 dogs from BAS in the last 2 years.
I am so grateful for the work they do in rescuing animals off of the streets in Mexico.
I have been a full time cat volunteer with the Baja Animal Sanctuary since June 1999. In those 22 years, we have adopted out over 2000 cats to only the BEST homes. There is no other organization I could work with that does a better job placing these kitties than BAS. We are blessed to have several long-time cat volunteers - one for 21 years and several for almost 20 years. A testament to our unwavering goal of placing these cats in their forever homes.
My dog that I adopted from Baja is about to Turn 14. The process of adopting her all those years was fantastic and the volunteers made it a great experience. Awesome organization still doing great things.
I’ve been volunteering for about a year with Baja Animal Sanctuary and it’s been a very enjoyable and satisfying experience. Kathleen and the other volunteers really care about all the kitties, and you can tell by how happy and playful all the cats and kittens are. I highly recommend Baja for volunteering and adopting. There is just so much love and care put into caring for these adorable babies ❤️❤️
We adopted our precious dog, Baylee from BAS. They were very thorough in making sure she was going to a good home and that we were a good match for each other once she went home with us. The BAS folks go to great efforts to rescue and find homes for animals. We rescued Baylee, and she brightens our lives every day.
I adopted my puppy Cody from BAS back in 2014. The staff at BAS was very friendly and let me meet Cody first with my other dog Ace to make sure they got along well. Ace took to Cody right away. BAS staff even visited my apartment to make sure Cody was settling in and well taken care of. Now Cody lives in MA with 1/2 acre to run around on and is very happy. So glad BAS gave Cody the chance to get off of the streets and into a loving home. Thank you!
I volunteered for a few weeks in Rosarito last October, 2019. I was so impressed with this wonderful organization and the little amount they have to work miracles with. Animals at their shelter are spade/ neutered, receive all medical attention and trained and loved before they are adopted.
But....its endless...just as they get 20 dogs adopted, someone leaves 15 abandoned puppies and 5 baby kitttens at their doorstep. IT IS CONSTANT.
They even offer to their neighbors, free spaying and neutering to help the local population of neglected and abused dogs and cats.
I cried when I had to leave to go back to California.
PLEASE GIVE TO THIS AMAZING FAMILY OF ANIMAL LOVERS.
They will have a special place in Heaven for these people.
Much Love,
Emily Ortiz
This is such an Amazing organization, we adopted our awesome two fur babies from them. I recommend them to all our friends and family. Thank you for all that you do Baja Animal sanctuary!
My daughter adopted her best friend Leroy from Baja Animal Sanctuary..he had many issues, great fear of humans and trust issues..they allowed her extra time..so wise and Leroy is this families spoiled pup..saved from the streets and now living the dream!
I got my dog Cider from them in 2006. Sadly, he passed away in 2017 of old age issues. I volunteered with their adoption events in San Diego. This organization rocks!!!!
Can’t say enough good things about this organization. Well run, great attention to the well being of the animals within their care.
Will adopt again from them when the time is right.

There is no other place that I would adopt a dog from. Our family has adopted many dogs from BAS. What the staff and volunteers do for the animals of Baja is so incredibly needed and a very thankless job. We appreciate everything that you do!
We have adopted one cat and one dog from BAS. I support this organization wholeheartedly as they face an uphill climb that many rescue organizations do not. They live in an area where they not only rescue neglected, abused, forgotten animals, but they also face a constant struggle of trying to educate a local populace which does not value these animals. I applaud them for the never-ending work they do. They are also very diligent in trying to place the animals in the best home possible, including home visits to the prospective families.
We adopted our sweet boy Dexter from BAS! He has by far been the best dog we have ever had and I think BAS for taking great care of him for the time they had him in their care. Adoption fees and reasonable and their vetting process is solid. I will use them again when the time comes.

Amazing organization that has helped save so many lives. They helped me find my best friend! They save dogs from the streets that suffer horrible neglect and abuse and find them loving homes. The world is a better place because of people like this.
I have adopted two amazing pups from BAS. The work that this group does is so wonderful - they care so much about the animals and do everything they can to ensure that each adoption is the right fit for both the owner and the dog!
I got my sweet Mocha from Elsa and BAS two years ago!...Such awesome people doing amazing things for all those amazing animals in Mexico!
I can not thank them enough!
I adopted two puppies from BAS. These people are so caring and loving with the fur babies. Their priority is the doggies and kitties. I love my babies. They both got a great start at BAS
We have adopted 3 amazing dogs from BAS. All 3 had been taken care of, examined, given vaccines. BAS makes sure you are a fit for the dog and the dog is a fit for you with the 2 week trial. They truly care for the dogs and love to hear from their “alumni”. We highly recommend adopting through BAS.
My family has adopted four dogs from Baja Animal Sanctuary! They are wonderful additions to the family. The volunteers are so committed and passionate, and take wonderful care of all the animals that come into the sanctuary.
I adopted “Jacob” and had him about 14 years. He was a rescue who had a very hard life but with Sunny caring for him he recovered and eventually crawled deep inside my heart. Who saved who?
I adopted my sweet Charlie from BAS 4.5 years ago. I can’t imagine our lives without him. We are so thankful that we stumbled upon him that day in the Petco lot and adopted him. Our lives were forever changed for the better.
12 years ago we began fostering for the Baja Animal Sanctuary. Before fostering, we completed a lengthy application. Volunteers then conducted an interview and checked out our home. Our foster dogs were adopted by amazing families after being thoroughly screened.
When it was time for us to adopt, we drove to BAS to bring home our baby. We were so impressed with their facilities, the caring they showed to all of the dogs. They never give up on any dogs, even those who are not adoptable.
I once rescued a mangy dog off the street. BAS picked him up, spent months treating and caring for him, then found him a forever home.
We regularly refer friends who are looking to adopt, including one just last week. All are thrilled with how BAS found them their perfect match.
I cannot say enough about this caring organization.
We have adopted four cats from BAS. I am very impressed with Kathleen’s dedication to find a good home for the animals in her care. She gave us several good tips on home safety and cat care. Our kitties were in very good health and settled into their new home very nicely.

We’ve adopted 4 cats from BAS over the years. Kathleen came to our house and had a few suggestions on preparing our home for our new babies. She even came over the next day to give 2 of our kitties their last vaccinations. I’ve e seen the volunteers in action and they are very ‘personable’ and give the kitties one in one attention. We are very happy with our new family members.
We adopted Layla this Feb and it was such an easy process. I first saw her online and contacted BAS who told me she was already set to meet a family but they would keep me in mind. Luckily for us it wasn’t a right match and Layla’s foster mom contacted me to see if we were still interested. I was, and she was so kind to send more pictures and videos. Knowing how shy Layla was, we met Layla at her foster house. It was love at first sight although since things were contingent on her getting along with my present dog, it was reassuring that BAS has a 2 wk foster period before finalizing adoptions. Now Layla and Chestnut play together all the time and it’s been so helpful for her to learn from him. I have been very impressed with the dedication of BAS Volunteers/fosters to find forever homes for the animals! They truly care to match the right family to the dogs and they even do an extra step of a home visit to make sure everyone is happy.
My precious pups were rescued by this wonderful group! I adopted them together and our lives have been blessed by both of them. Thank you BAS for your commitment to these helpless animals.
I met my heart dog through Baja Animal Sanctuary. We've been together for about a year and a half and she's the best dog ever. Everyone who meets her loves her, can't believe she was a rescue, and tells me they wish they'd adopted her. If I ever get another dog, I'll only adopt from Baja.
The adoption was thorough and fair, putting the dog's best interest first but keeping the process easy and straight forward.
We adopted Marcus about 5 years ago and he has become the best friend ever. He is gentle and goofy and loves walks more than anything.. Except maybe food. We had a great experience with the Baja Animal Sanctuary. You can tell how much they care about animals. So happy to have Marcus in our lives.
This rescue was very communicative and wonderful to work with. Each of the volunteers I spoke with has such passion for animals and I was impressed with the efficient system they have to find homes for their animals. Our senior dog Allie (on the right) was cared for by them for a few years before being considered socially ready for adoption. We recently took her to the vet and she got a glowing bill of health— it is apparent that their dogs are very well taken care of. I had spoken with multiple rescues before we adopted our new family member and we really enjoyed the whole experience with Baja Animal Sanctuary.
I adopted a 4 month old puppy from BAS. I love how they begin with a foster period to ensure a good match, and will actually come out to conduct a site visit before they are officially adopted. He is now going on 2 years old, and is the best dog ever. Thank you BAS for your efforts in rescuing and giving him a better chance at life!
I adopted my dog from BAS about four months ago and I’m still in awe of how much they truly care for their animals! The adoption process was so easy and they were so friendly! When they came to do the home visit, I knew for sure that I adopted from the right organization. They go above and beyond to make sure there is a good fit and set you up for success with your new fur baby!
Great non-profit saving homeless dogs from Mexico. The adoption process was quick and easy. We live our Rubi.
We have adopted two dogs with BAS and our experience from beginning to end through the whole process was incredible. The volunteers and staff are friendly, supportive, and truly are passionate about what they do. I could not be happier with our experience and our BAS rescues have brought so much love and light into our lives.
We adopted Kobe in February 2016. The staff is very friendly and professional. We love Baja and we will use them again for our next pet.

We adopted our fur baby Cali, formerly Ashley over a year ago. The representatives from BAS were very kind, informative, helpful and professional. We were impressed with how they came to check our home and make sure it was suitable for our future dog. They followed up with us and made sure Cali was a good fit for our family. If we choose to add another dog to our family, we will surely go to BAS first.
I called them about this poor dog that was obviously lost from her family (a few days after fireworks 4th of July). They came right over, we’re kind n gentle to this shy frightened dog. They took her to Thier sanctuary and looked for her owners, eventually finding her a new home. ❤️
Baja Animal Sanctuary is the best. They truly care about matching animals who need homes to the perfect family. Out Lani was a Baja Dog, and the sanctuary helped complete our family!
Baja Animal Sanctuary truly stands behind their mission to provide a safe haven for dogs and cats. I’ve been able to experience many of their adoption events firsthand and have visited the sanctuary many times. Every volunteer I’ve worked with has exhibited the utmost professionalism and care for animals. I’m so impressed with the work they do with their regular spay/neuter clinics. I’m so grateful to be part of their volunteer network.
BAS is so nice to work with, we are so lucky we found our pup through them 6 years ago. Highly recommended!
I adopted my pup from BAS and loved working with them. It was smooth, no-hassle process. They do a really great job of socializing the dogs, before they're adopted and you can tell they're really invested in making sure the dogs go to great homes.
We adopted our beautiful little Girl, Poppy (formerly known as Vanilla) from Baja Animal Sanctuary (BAS) in September 2018 following the loss of one of our beloved corgis, Annie, to stomach cancer. As this is the second Corgi we lost to cancer, we decided we would adopt our next dog. I looked through PetFinders and found Poppy who was available through BAS. When we brought Poppy into our lives, we had to introduce her to our Corgi, Cody, who for the first week wasn't very welcoming but after that time, they became best buds. We also had to work with Poppy on separation anxiety in coordination with our wonderful vets at Mast Blvd Pet Hospital (Santee, CA) with a combination of medicine and behavioral modification. Poppy is our sweet little sunshine as she is so happy to see us that if I just look at her, her tail wags so fast that her whole body gets into that wag. As BAS is located in Baja, they bring dogs to the San Diego area for adoption at a pet store. When we picked up Poppy, she was well cared for and had her shots. The adoption process is not super invasive as other groups I have past experience with, but it is thorough and a volunteer does a home check several weeks after adoption to see how things are going before the adoption is finalized. Please check out BAS' website (http://www.bajaanimalsanctuary.org/) as the story is so heartwarming to read and there are photos so you can see their facility. BAS is a no-kill facility with wonderful volunteers who take care of animals who for whatever reason are not adoptable for the rest of their life. I think BAS' tag line says it all: "On behalf of those who have no voice." If you are unable to adopt a pet from BAS, please consider donating money to this very worthy organization as they take in any animal in need. Please check BAS out!!
I have been loosely involved with several rescues and closely involved with Baja Animal Sanctuary. My commitment to BAS over the other rescues is due to the ethical and professional way they operate. They truly focus on the welfare of their animals before, ,during and after the adoption process. I have seen them go out of their way and what is required of a rescue to help the family and their adopted dog.
We adopted our first dog from Baja Animal Sanctuary 6 months ago, she brings so much joy and love into our lives. Baja is a great organization that provides care, shelters, socialization, spay and neuter, vaccinations, and services for sick and injured animals. We had a terrific experience adopting through the sanctuary and working with their volunteers to find the best dog for us. Would highly recommend.
I found out about BAS when my sister adopted her pooch from them 8 years ago. She had such a great experience that I decided to adopt from them as well. They were very helpful and supportive during the adoption process, answering my many questions. I like that they do a two-week foster period to make sure it's a good fit for the pup and you. I've recently started volunteering with BAS at their dog adoption events; it's so much fun to meet the pups and see how happy people are to take them home. BAS does such great work in Baja rescuing dogs and cats, including providing free spay and neuter clinics. I can't say enough good things about them!
We were grieving the loss of one of our two dogs and our remaining dog was really sad and listless. We searched around and happily found BAS and their many adorable pups which we could see and read about online. We love the way they educate, and emphasize the responsibility, and commitment to the nurture of animals—- our pets are family members, not just cute commodities. The adoption process is easy and is followed up by a home visit to insure good matches of families and pets. We went to meet the pup we had preselected online and ended up with two!!!❤️❤️Another dog had been passed over twice but we knew she was meant for us. She is so smart and wonderful! She lives up to her name “ Whoa Nellie “.
Our 2 BAS dogs are now 3 years old, well trained, very healthy, and are devoted to us, each other and to our original “ alpha” female,
Willow. The BAS pups are well socialized from birth.
Do not hesitate to support this committed group that does so much good for all of us in managing the population of tragically abandoned and abused animals, preventing spread of disease and unwanted litters, and especially uniting families with beloved pets.
We can’t thank you enough!

We adopted our dog Rosie front Baja Animal Sanctuary and it was such a pleasant experience. They care so much about every animal and put so much love into everything they do. Highly recommend them to anyone looking to adopt!
Both of my dogs I have adopted from BAS within the last 2.5 yrs. All of the volunteers/directors are truly dedicated to helping animals in need and finding them their forever homes. Before adopting my first dog I spoke with several other rescues who didn’t have half of the compassion BAS does for both the animals and families they pair them with. They are helpful, organized, personable, and possess every quality you would want to see in a non profit rescue.
The organization is top notch. They helped me adopt a 5 Month old Labrador mix. She’s been a great addition to the family.
We adopted our dog from here almost 8 years ago and we just love her. We were very happy with the adoption process. I really love how BAS has you technically “foster” the dog for the first two weeks. I think that’s a great way to make sure the dog has found the right forever home. I think BAS does great work for the homeless dogs in Baja!
There was this poor homeless dog and I called Baja Animal Sanctuary. They came right over, coaxed the dog into Thier car and took her to thier facility. They vaccinated her, bathed her, fed her and took her across border to US and found her a new forever home. They are wonderful loving people!!
Our dogs all had their start at Baja Sanctuary. Their first priority is matching dogs to the right owner- Judy is a Saint!
The animals here who so often comefrim terrible situations om the street, and with Sunny and amazing team, they are cared for, healed and loved. A true sanctuary. A wonderful place to find a furever friend.
We've been talking about adopting a rescue for a few years but wanted to wait until our children were older. This summer we decided it was time. I found Baja online and started looking at their available dogs. One particular puppy caught my eye. I filled out the adoption application and was approved. We went to pick him up the very next day! We called him Harley and he's such a sweetheart! I knew exactly what to do in case he got sick during the 2 week foster period and a volunteer called me a couple times during those 2 weeks to see how Harley was doing. It's been two months and we are so happy with Harley! He brings light to our world and our children love spending time with him. He's truly a part of our family!! I love the work Baja does. They are amazing!
I adopted a 8 year old Wheaten Terrier/Baja Blend from Baja Animal Sanctuary. She had been living on the streets for years. A BAS volunteer recused her and she was given wonderful care at the sanctuary. Undoubtedly, she was a puppy machine while living rough and was spayed immediately, given all her vaccines and is living a wonderful life because of her care.

I adopted a German Shepard puppy from Baja Animal Sanctuary. After searching for 2 months for just the right puppy for a play mate for my 2 yr old Rottie. After bring the puppy home on Sat. I gave her a drink of water and took her out to the back yard so she could go poddy. As soon as I had put her down she went pee the let loose with the runniest smelliest poop I had ever seen. Now I knew I was getting her so I had already made a vet appointment with my vet For Monday morning. For a puppy check. She had diarrhea Sat and Sunday. After letting my vet know where she came from and the Oder of the diarrhea. My vet needed a sample and feared Giardia. I took the puppy home and by 2pm had the sample for my vet. The results were back by morning at the vet. In the mean time late Monday night my 2 yr old Rottie starting having the same smelly diarrhea. He was very healthy. Up to date on all his shot. All his yearly examams. No problems with him. By morning when the vet called to tell me it was Giardia. Both dogs were fully infected. It's now Tuesday morning. So I am back at the vet with both dogs. Getting educated by my vet about picking up the running diarrhea right away. And wiping there butts and paws. I wore rubber gloves. I washed there bowls there toys in bleach. Thursday night I start getting pain in my adamond like I was passing a kiddey stone. That is what I thought it was having gone threw that 2 yrs prior. Low and behold I also had Giardia. Of course I am keeping the puppy. The dogs stools r not completely hard but r harder. I am in $700.00 in vet bills and I am still not done there they both have to go back in a week for more test. And $300.00 for my medical. Plus the $200.00 I spent to purchase the puppy. My vet said they knew this puppy was sick and had diarrhea. Sure they do wonderful things by taking in strays. But to be that desparet to pass off sick dogs to people. Is unexcusable.
