My experience with this shelter is absolutely appalling. The employees and the animals at this shelter are treated with a total disrespect of any kind. My grievances were ignored several times by the assistant manager and according to guidelines I was told to address her with any issues regarding other employees or the treatment of animals. I have now seeked legal counsel and have also contacted the North Carolina Department of Agriculture.
Review from Guidestar
The Avery County Humane Society, the only organization of it's kind in the county, has become an example for others of how to keep moving animals into good homes and avoid euthanasia. For the past year they have become in reality a no-kill shelter since no animal is ever put down for lack of space. That was something that was common before that but the staff and present board are fully committed to keeping it that way. In the past year the euthanasia rate has been more than cut in half and the adoptions have more than doubled. Their intent is to make this shelter and education center a model for North Carolina.
