Mission: In 1971, a group of passionate parents founded ausm to seek greater understanding and better school supports for their children with autism. More than four decades later, ausm continues its mission to improve the lives of people with autism, but with an expanded focus along the entire lifespan, from birth through retirement. Whether you are the parent of a child with a new diagnosis, an adult with autism who needs guidance, an educator or healthcare professional who supports people with autism, or a company that wants to learn more about the talents of people with autism, ausm offers the resources you need to help you accomplish your goals. Ausm is a place where everyone can learn, access services, and develop skills for navigating what can be challenging emotions and complex information. Programs: Ausm camps: ausm camps are tailored to meet the needs of individuals with autism spectrum disorders of all ages- those who are independent, and those who need more support. More than 200 young people participated in ausm camp last summer. Educational services: life with autism series: autism doesn't come with a road map, but ausm's life with autism series can set you on the right path with its hope-filled, engaging classes designed for parents, family members, relatives, and caregivers of individuals with autism. The life with autism series also features classes for those who want to obtain a basic understanding of this neurological developmental disorder and to learn about identification and intervention strategies. The life with autism series includes: intro to autism, newly diagnosed, adolescence, and adults. Ausm social skills classes: led by autism experts, ausm social skills classes foster confidence and self-esteem while participants make friends, interact with a group, practice socializing, and have fun - all while educators encourage participants to be themselves. Classes offer low- stress, accepting environments that promote learning and growth while celebrating neurodiversity. Behavior consultation: mental health services: ausm mental health services team specializes in diagnostic, functional and behavioral assessments; individual, family and developmental therapy; behavior consultation; and training for organizations and service providers. Ausm also provides free support groups to meet the needs of parents, children, family members, individuals, couples and more. Annual state conference: held annually during autism awareness month, the minnesota autism conference is open to the public and is especially beneficial for teachers, educators, doctors, clinicians, psychologists, as well as parents and families of individuals on the autism spectrum, including adults with asd. 2017 keynote speakers included steve silberman, temple grandin, phd, kerry magro, and chris ulmer.
