Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Arts & Culture, Autism, Disabilities, Health, Theater

Mission: Autism Community Theatre is a creative and accepting community where young people of diverse abilities can form friendships, work on communication and social skills and extend their thinking about the world through theatre activities.

Results: Autism Community Theatre held its first workshop in October 2016 with only 2 actors. We have continued to build an ensemble and most actors continue from year to year. The workshop has grown to include a playwriting component and has collaborated with outside youth theatre groups including IMPACT Repertory Theatre. We seek to continue to partner with other community arts organizations, to expand our reach by adding additional workshops and to invite guest teaching artists for special workshops including puppetry, movement, mime and songwriting.

Target demographics: teens and young adults on the autism spectrum

Direct beneficiaries per year: A group of teens and young adults develop as a creative, collaborative ensemble of actors and performers

Geographic areas served: New York City

Programs: theatre workshops

My son LOVES participating in ACT! In the 3 years that he's been involved, he has gained confidence and even made friends. He's even written a skit for the group. I'm most appreciative of the warm, friendly, creative and supportive environment that ACT provides. Gina DeMetrius works tirelessly to include all, not something that we found in other activities. ACTs year-end performance is fun and my son is always excited to strut his stuff onstage!

I have attended my nephews ACT performance and it was awesome! It was nice to see at the end of their performance the actors were very happy and proud of themselves. The staff members did a great job assisting them.

I have been a dedicated Supporting Player for 5 years at ACT Community Theatre workshop. It is amazing to work with teens and young adults that have autism. These teens are amazing and they all bring a very special skill to our program from verbal and non verbal interactions that we have together. As a Supporting Player I truly enjoy interacting with the teens and young adults when we work on theater games, improvisations, skits, and scene studies.

My nephew goes to these hourly classes on Saturdays. I have the pleasure of taking him & waiting until the class is done. He is always, ready and excited to go. The performance they put on at the end of the season is cute. You get to see all the hard work they have been striving for, on those Saturday mornings. Gina the teacher is amazing with all the kids, they all love her. As do the moms (and auntie)

My son has attended ACT for 5 years now. This program has helped David express himself in many creative ways. He's learned how to say jokes on stage, he's done playwriting and much more. But most of all David has made improvement in his social skills. There aren't any nonprofit programs like this for the autism community. We are grateful to find this one.

My nephew is a participating actor who clearly enjoys his time in class and loves being on stage for performance. Gina and her team do an amazing job engaging and enriching these teens lives, helping them to appreciate the value of social bonds. I only wish more kids on the spectrum had this opportunity.
