Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Arts & Culture, Autism, Disabilities, Health, Theater

Mission: Autism Community Theatre is a creative and accepting community where young people of diverse abilities can form friendships, work on communication and social skills and extend their thinking about the world through theatre activities.

Results: Autism Community Theatre held its first workshop in October 2016 with only 2 actors. We have continued to build an ensemble and most actors continue from year to year. The workshop has grown to include a playwriting component and has collaborated with outside youth theatre groups including IMPACT Repertory Theatre. We seek to continue to partner with other community arts organizations, to expand our reach by adding additional workshops and to invite guest teaching artists for special workshops including puppetry, movement, mime and songwriting.

Target demographics: teens and young adults on the autism spectrum

Direct beneficiaries per year: A group of teens and young adults develop as a creative, collaborative ensemble of actors and performers

Geographic areas served: New York City

Programs: theatre workshops

My son LOVES participating in ACT! In the 3 years that he's been involved, he has gained confidence and even made friends. He's even written a skit for the group. I'm most appreciative of the warm, friendly, creative and supportive environment that ACT provides. Gina DeMetrius works tirelessly to include all, not something that we found in other activities. ACTs year-end performance is fun and my son is always excited to strut his stuff onstage!

My son Max has been with ACT since its inception. I would not have believed then how much he can - and likes to participate now.
Gina is incredibly talented and motivated in reaching our children for whom there simply was no such place.

I have been a volunteer with ACT since it’s inception 5+ years ago. Gina is a brilliant, creative director. Our actors are fully engaged, incl singing, dancing, playwriting & developing their theatre skills. I treasure being a part of this dynamic community.

My son David has been attending the Autism Community Theatre program since day one. Thanks to Gina and her wonderful staff of volunteers, they have created a comfortable safe space for the actors to creatively express themselves. Gina creates many opportunities for interaction amongst the actors. Which has helped David with his social skills. David has played in many fun roles. We look forward to the annual play Gina and her staff work hard to help create with the actors. As a mom, it is amazing to see David so happy and proud of himself after his performance. It is followed by a pizza and a dance party celebration for all their hard work. It is extremely hard to find a free acting program for the special needs community. Most programs are very expensive so I am happy David can attend this awesome acting program.

My son has attended ACT for 5 years now. This program has helped David express himself in many creative ways. He's learned how to say jokes on stage, he's done playwriting and much more. But most of all David has made improvement in his social skills. There aren't any nonprofit programs like this for the autism community. We are grateful to find this one.

My son has been attending ACT for about 5 years. He has met new friends and he loves to improv when he gets the chance. He loves going and meeting with his friends. ACT can actually help with socialization. You might be shy starting out but all that goes out the window.

Autism Community Theatre is a wonderful, welcoming community that offers all participants a place to make friends, to laugh and to grow. As a parent, I'm so grateful for this community - a place where everyone knows my child and values their strengths. We parents love the chance to see each other too!

My nephew goes to these hourly classes on Saturdays. I have the pleasure of taking him & waiting until the class is done. He is always, ready and excited to go. The performance they put on at the end of the season is cute. You get to see all the hard work they have been striving for, on those Saturday mornings. Gina the teacher is amazing with all the kids, they all love her. As do the moms (and auntie)

My nephew is a participating actor who clearly enjoys his time in class and loves being on stage for performance. Gina and her team do an amazing job engaging and enriching these teens lives, helping them to appreciate the value of social bonds. I only wish more kids on the spectrum had this opportunity.
